We are a family of 4. We lived in a camper at the beach for 2 years. We paid $650 a month everything included. So my husband paid all bills. I worked my butt off and saved every penny. We only made 30 thousand a year. We bought a $35, 000 fixer this year. We sold our old diesel truck and camper. That gave us enough money to get a older truck for my husband and fix the house up and get furniture.

I could never save money, mostly because the 2 women I had married were big-time spenders! After my second divorce 6 years ago, I came to the sobering realization that at 55 with about 9 hundred dollars to my name I was Going to end up a flat-broke old gizzer in a tiny room somewhere! I went into “PANIC-ACTION” mode; exited my expensive rental apartment...bought a used small RV camper and basically LIVED on the city streets for 4 years. My meals came from soup kitchens and city-run pantries. Entertainment was KZfaq videos and playing solitaire! Clothing came from discarded bins and throwaway! A MISERABLE existence to say the least, but I was able to save 54 thousand dollars!! Bought a tiny cooperatives apartment ALL CASH. And by the GRACE of GOD, I am enjoying my life now!! My monthly maintenance is tiny and I even have a balcony! I applaud the camper family below who lived at the beach for years to save money; for all those naysayers who say it “IMPOSSIBLE” a reminder...the word POSSIBLE is embedded in the word IMPOSSIBLE!!! We shared old houses with flatmates while renting - peeling paint, no phone, tv, dishwasher or washing machine. We worked two jobs, bought a box of fruit & veg to share. Lots of vege & rice curries. Saturday nights were sausages on bread. Flatmates all contributed to basic ingredients pool - bread milk, butter. Any money leftover we could buy a cheap flagon of wine & play records & tell jokes. The houses rented were always furnished. Once a week we walked to the pub to see a free band often drinking water at the pub. We saved to buy land, improved it with fruit trees, sold it for double, bought a two bedroom old house in the country & worked from home on the verandah on a desk made from a chook shed. Looked after kids, stripped the floors & varnished the wood. Changed the caroet, tiled the bathroom. Painted the house. Sold to first looker for double paid. Built a house. Tiled & painted ourselves. Went to uni part time. Got a better job, did a market stall. Designed other houses. We never borrowed money just saved & scraped & worked. It can be done if you have your health. Health is everything to be able to do it. Eat basic ingredients & healthy. All furniture is secondhand except bed & saved heaps on that. You can do it but not overnight. Bit by bit. Good on you!

Have not paid any house payments for 11 years. It helps that my background is construction. But i have a good woman, without her money means very little.

You have done great! I have found that the people around me who say it can't be done, are the ones spending extravagant amounts on cigarettes, alcohol, eating out, high priced cell phones, weekly shopping for entertainment, frequent vacation trips, etc. When they tell me they can't possibly spend any less, it boggles my mind. Anyone who really wants to change, I send to your channel. I spend a lot of time learning more & more on KZfaq and am much happier living frugally than anyone I know who isn't living within their means. Keep teaching, people need it.

Yes, houses in our area were starting at 200k up to million BUT, we did find a fixer upper (45k)and boy was it. We are old and worked on it for a year. We stripped it to the studs, while living with my daughter and hubby. They helped us when they could. When it was livable we moved in and then my kids moved in for 4 weeks while their house purchase closed. One hand washes the other...and sometimes you have to bite your tongue! 🤣 I think it's the best move we have made in 60 years. Wish we did it at 20 years old!!!!!!!

Hi PP, I am always commenting on your videos just under a different name (Mr Harrison) as I now have a YT channel so different account. You have impacted my life so much. I was terribly in debt but have now paid all student loans, loans and credit cards OFF! I bought a one bedroom apartment cheaply 5 years ago and it’s half paid off. I now have a timeline that I’m working on to pay off the rest. When I do, I’m quitting my stressful job and gonna work part time, while saving a bit towards retirement. I have let this job affect my health, mental and physical, so much and now the end is in sight. I won’t be wealthy but I’ll have an emergency fund, a pension for when I’m 60 and a paid off home. Having the freedom to work less and hopefully for myself is what I call wealth. Love everything you do! Thanks 😊

Remember if buying a home for cash as a fixer, you will have expenses such as insurance, maintenance and repair and property tax. Try for lowest cost tolerable neighborhood, city/county (property tax rates are based locally in most states) and work availability. Also consider safety and crime rates for last 3 years (look at trend).

Some goes to savings, he shows me, but a lot of spending as well. I finally got him to bring packed lunches, I was calculating the numbers on how much he spent on buying lunch - even from a grocery store. 👍 I didnt get the money thing straight until I was widowed at 37, and turned the ship around. I have been frugal as far back as I remember not wanting to end up poor like my parents. When I met my husband he was the same way. We lived with major frugality only ate out with deals once every few months had roommates in the first house we bought and used the money to pay down the mortgage faster. In 10 years paid off the house. We then decided to have 2 kids knowing that is what we could provide for. We were a little older starting a family but so glad we did. People don't like to do what it takes and be patient for what they want. I do t feel bad for the whiners anymore they always have excuses. Keep going girl love watching you.

I take my hat off to you, PP. You had a plan, you followed it and you got what you wanted. In a way, it's very simple - your consistency in following the plan, even if you went off plan now and then and made some less good decisions, is probably what got you to the finish line and able to take this particular house when it came along. I have nothing but admiration and respect for you. I've had some success myself in the past from making a plan and sticking to it consistently, too. And people don't always like it if they see you being willing to make sacrifices for your goal and your dream that they are either too lazy or for some other reason it doesn't suit them to make themselves. Don't you worry about the haters! You and those lovely dogs of yours are living a good life, on less! (Look at the way Nala has blossomed! It's refreshing to see channels about frugality. Spending is so unnecessary and out of control in this country. Reckless spending without value can mess up one's life. They should teach more about financial responsibility and minimalism in school. Home ownership not ownership of "things" brings a freedom that can pull people put of poverty.

Interestingly, pre-pandemic personal savings rates in the US averaged around 7%. In mid-pandemic (April 2020) it peaked at 33%. What is it now? 3.5 % in December of 2022. Lockdown showed us that saving more money was possible. Most have, sadly, already forgotten those lessons.

My grandfather during world war 2 saved and payed cash for a modest house in less than 3 years, although it was a different time then he was working in a factory 7 days a week 12 hour shifts, (it was work sleep and eat) and he had already lived and worked through the depression as a young man as so many other had at that time, so frugality was common place especially during war times! We're living in a different world today, there's numerous distractions easy credit and material items to spend money on, frugality is still alive although not popular unfortunately some folks are forced into making changes when economic hurricane hits and they've over leveraged themselves, there's a lot to learn from these hard lessons!

I sold my condo for 165 and bought a bigger house. Prepped Princess way is better, but taking advice from her and using it as really helped me. Your dogs always make me smile!!! You are sooo right in the way you think about money, consumerism and debt. I am a lot older then you, and I still learn from you!! I come from a frugal family: no debt, homeecooked meals and I never had a credit card. I am most grateful that my kids have inherited this behavior. They have made long term plans. Here, in the Netherlands, you retire at 67 yrs old. My kids csn only retire when they are 70 ..... (and in France there are big riots because the retirement age is going from 62 to 64). Anyway their houses are paid but appr 1/5 amount stays unpaid otherwise taxes go through the roof. So they have switched their goals to : being able to retire when they want to. That is real freedom!!!

We kept working and saving all the way through the pandemic. We consider ourselves lucky, as many people lost their jobs and had to move away from London (went back to their home countries or moved back with parents...). Holding a job or multiple jobs is getting increasingly difficult and less well paid, the struggle is real for millions of families here in the UK

Love your honesty, Prepper. As a person about to collect her retirement this year, i appreciate all that you tell us about saving and spending and any other tips you have. BTW I found a bread machine, envying you getting yours at $9. Salvation Army had a fifty per cent sale for back to school; I got mine for $39!! It was missing two kneaders but i ordered them the same day. It is a Japanese brand called Zojirushi; checked and found it is high end. Retail price: $429.00!! I nearly fainted. Cant wait to make my first loaf of white bread!

A person with self direction does not have to adjust to other peoples opinions. They will move forward and obtain what they work for in spite of negatively. People who complain and criticize are usually the ones who never accomplish much. Success is it's own reward, and the answer to criticism !

After listening to you for almost a year - I made a goal in 2023 to get out of debt and to help improve my credit. I hope to buy my first home by fall 2023. Looking for a second job now. I used to work two jobs when I was younger but I didn't spend my money well.

Our first property we bought we had a one year old child. It was a three bedroom three bath. We rented out the two bedrooms and two baths to two tenants. The tenants gave us enough to pay the mortgage. Then a few years later after our second child we moved to a house then rented the first house we bought. And so on. To do it again I wish we would have paid for houses in full but I wanted to be a stay at home mom and my husband didn't make enough to buy cash. So we're still paying off mortgages. We live extremely frugal.

In my early 20 I damage my credit buying cracy items. For years I save all my tax returns and when the housing market problem I was able to buy a old home. Nothing fancy got it for 19 paid cash and keep fixing it all the time. It's been 11 yrs. and now with the money I saved from rent was able to paid most of my collections plus fix the home. I am 55 and bow trying to save so I can retire at 60.

When you are ready, if you live in a state with the service, consider NACA. They help low and middle income people get a home. No closing fees, no down payment and below average interest rates. They do require you own no other property (can’t be an investor) and you must live in the home 5 years. FHA requires 1 year. A real estate professional I highly respect that specializes in first time homeowners said to consider other programs, also. There are many out there to help people. I have no monetary interest in this or any other program. Investigate them all. You might be eligible now to buy a home. Some require as little as $1,000 to cover the appraisal and home inspection. Depending on where you are, some real estate agents aren’t crazy busy and more able to help.

That's amazing that you made over 100k! I agree with you as far as adjusting your lifestyle to realize your dream. I'm a rehabilitated spendthrift who's debt-free for the first time and it feels heavenly to have that monkey off my back. When I was much younger, I bought my 1st home that needed updating but was in a very desirable location. After pouring a *lot* of blood, sweat & tears into it, I sold it 9 yrs. later for over 2x's what I paid for it. And after the remaining mortgage loan payoff and closing costs, I had enough bank to pay cash for a smaller home that also needed updating, but in the same location. I *did* hire a handyman as well as plumbers & electricians to do some heavy work ie: wiring and plumbing for a laundry room, a couple new electrical outlets and an over the stove microwave, etc. It's currently worth about 85% over what I paid for it 5 years ago and that puts a smile on my face every day. The lifestyle adjustments that some would call sacrifices are *well* worth it! 🏠
