Bernth, I don’t consider myself super fast, definitely not your level of speed, but- one thing that helped me was reducing my gain a lot. The tone wasn’t always what I wanted for the part, but I wasn’t hiding behind the distortion and I could find what needed fixing much more quickly. This is where I really understood your point about relaxing. Keep up the good work, thank you for the video!

I remember a Tom Hess article on speed and he had this whole complicated deal with percentages of max tempo that you built on with a certain amount of days devoted to each percentage. Got nowhere, of course, but John Petrucci’s “wind sprints” concept - which is very similar to what we’re shown here - did more for me than anything else.

I have previously made a recommendation for Bernth's Patreon. It is in some small way my attempt to thank Bernth for all of his help. From my perspective, his Patreon content is truly an amazing value. It is not an "after thought" of a busy working musician. Rather it is the product of a world class guitar teacher that puts time into his lessons. Clearly, he understands how to get where most of us want to be on the guitar. The content is well structured, professionally produced and quite honestly some of the best material I have obtained. Also, there is a lot of it! If you are at all thinking about joining, give it a try. You will not be disappointed. Thanks again Bernth!

Thanks for the help. I've been caught up with the Fade to Black intro solo for so long. I broke up the really fast part down into 3 sections and played it at a BPM closer to tempo with a pause in between. I eventually got it to tempo after 2 days from watching. Seriously, thanks! For a long time, I stuck myself in the ceiling with 120 BPM 16s. And recently I came to work out 4-note patterns with short shots. Or alternate 8th and 16th at the same pace. Doing this exercise for 30-40 minutes, I raised the speed from 120 to 190 BPM. After such a warm-up, multi-string passages were easily accelerated to 140-150 BPM. And some are even higher.

This video couldn't have come at a better time for me since I've been heavily focused on the speed barrier. Frustrating but I'll never give up. I've abandoned the metronome for about 2 weeks and have been playing fast to get the "running" feel which kind of works but I look forward to starting the 2 string exercise on this video today. Thanks Bernth

Step 2 has been awesome for me - I call it "pushing the tempo" and I use it when I'm stuck at a particular tempo. I find that it helps break through tough parts because after pushing the tempo, your target tempo feels all the more easy! I remember first learning about it in John Petrucci's Rock Discipline video.

I actually like your step 3 a lot! I purchased that magical copy of Reaper with the built in "can't play what you practiced" feature that is enabled when you press record, so I started practicing with a slower reminder tempo, what I want, and then faster than I can play and being okay with playing sloppy. My hope was to be able to play a little faster than I wanted so recording speeds felt slower. I found that it's helped me get in the mindset so it's not overwhelming when I speed up. Glad it has some validity and isn't a placebo. Cheers!

I can't but say THANKS for this video, and for this channel which I only start exploring. I still haven't bought a guitar, only planning. But while choosing which songs I would like to learn, I searched 'How to play fast' And since I am attending the piano the 4th year, but see no significant shifts.. I just asked my teacher to increase my tempo! And not only playing with metronome makes you sweat, but I started memorizing the notes and hands/finger movements and positions.

Before watching this any further, I had a personal breakthrough the other night, I instantly gained 5 BPM to smash my threshold of 115 bpm 16th notes just by adjusting the way I grip my pick, got that from one of your older videos. Now I've also realised that by speeding up past my comfort zone playing sloppy, then turning the speed down again it becomes easy. My trouble is my fretting hand now can't keep up, gets tired soon, cubital tunnel isn't helping either. If it wasn't for your channel I wouldn't be trying these things. Thanks much brother\m/

Well done man. That was perfectly explained. I’d picked up these tips myself from various sources (Guthrie Govan on technique, MAB on starting with your potential picking speed and doing short burst exercises, Petrucci and Rusty Cooley on overshooting your practice speeds to feel what playing fast is like). But you’re the first person to put them all together like this. If anyone is watching this wondering whether this is just another video in a sea of speed advice videos, no! It’s genuinely the truth about increasing speed. I would also say it’s great that you aren’t doing that classic thing of making guitarists feel bad for wanting to play fast. I hate it when people say ‘in the end it’s important to play musically’. DUHHH but I also want to shred!
@thefourthwritedjentleman3643 Жыл бұрын
Yep well said, he did explain it so succinctly and I am the sane as you - worked it outa while ago - but so well explained - even has TABs on screen - so you can start creating your own excersise etc in guitarpro Actually guitarpro program is when I really started to improve - just using it in general When I started 30 odd years ago we had nothing like that Wow that just made me feel really really old saying that 😂 But it is true - I am using it right now to learn something, and just looping them, building the tempo etc So useful lol

Your technique and walk/ run theory is very similar to physical training in the army and the military training idea of crawl, walk, run. I was so bad at running until ait mechanic school was.introduced to a.method that helped me immensely that could easily be transfered over to building speed on guitar. We would walk, at a decent fast pace, around a track for 2 min then d.s. would blow a whistle that meant we were to run as fast as possible.for 1 minute, then when heard the whistle again, resume walking, and so forth. Gradually, the amount of time walking decreased while the time running increased. Im gonna try it on guitar actually !!!

I've played guitar for many many years, but I cannot play very fast. Reason is because I never worked at it. But, recently I've decided to work at it. I totally understand that you have to discover the way it should "feel" with your picking hand, and that it feels differently than playing slower. Would you say that it is a different feeling with your fretting hand as well?
