I often train with a new gun too often. And while that’s great for being familiar with multiple platforms it sometimes comes as a curse as well. So today we discuss picking one platform and training with it.

@@borkwoof696A legit critique, to be sure, and I'm 100% in agreement in principle that both are fantastic. ...but since this is the internet, I'll 'critique the critique. We're at a point where the AR15 is such a finely honed (developed... whatever) platform that any optimization is going to be a matter of degrees. As in racing, however, at the peak of performance, tiny differences start to feel magnified and personal preference starts to take an outsized role. I guess where I'm going with this is that while both are fantastic, the differences will make a difference to the role and to the shooter's preference.

Different rifles for different roles man. If you were doing work from vehicles in a wide open area like the PNW or great plains, the heavier rifle with more capability mounted on it is a great option. But if you're humping it through the Appalachians, having a sub 8lb rifle means you can carry more ammo/suatainment. Plus with the lighter rifle, you can put more capability on it and end up with a lighter weapon overall. It's all give and take, but I honestly think that the lighter setup gives you a more general purpose carbine over the heavier setup.

Honestly I'm in the same boat as you. I love firearms so much that it makes it impossibly hard to choose what type of build I like best. Then again, I'm a broke guy with a PSA AR and a Vortex Strike eagle LPVO 1-6. I tend to run a minimalist setup as far as rail additions to keep the weight down. I have no issues regarding accuracy out to 500 yards. (When I'm on point) I tend to lean a little more to the light weight setups. Mainly due to the fact that my left arm has screws and a plate in it.😂 Makes it a lil tough to shoulder the chunkier boi's.

Awesome Video! The ACOG is a snap shot in time. In 2004/5 it was something from another World, especially since Uncle Sam did not want to buy MK4's for every Squad Designed Marksmen in the USMIL. We were simply getting the job done with what we had. NOW with LPVO's, RED DOTS, and training like no other time in American History, the ACOG is a relic. If you were to tell me in the EARLY GWOT that "training on the civilian side would be better than the USMIL", I would have called you insane. But here we are; Civilians with Night Vision.

Eye relief and practical application are huge when designing a build. If you are using a rifle like these, you need to set aside the design until you really think about what you'd be using it for. Then build in the comfort and accessories after. With longer range in mind, I'd always recommend accuracy and recoil reduction over anything. If this is a hill rifle that you'll be luggin around a lot, build it lighter. But in the case of strictly LVPO vs ACOG, I'd always prefer variable zoom with better eye relief and sight picture, at the cost of extra weight

Home defense AR’s in 16” should ALWAYS BE .300BLK/AAC because it maximizes the cartridges full potential without being 18-20” s….It’s also a .30 caliber projectile with the same number of rounds as .556 with more led per shot and also easier to suppress and can run 200+Gr subsonic’s thumpers or 110gr supers and everything in between with a mag change and it’s much more powerful than .556 in the same configurations with the same AR controls, magazines and is also quieter with less flash as well! For home defense in 16” it’s .300BLK-hits like a train! Makes .556 16” for home defense an afterthought! Once you go black you don’t go back 😉👍

@@hambone950, No. I have a TA33 weighing in at nearly 3 ounces LESS than the TA31 even without an RMR, as the TA33 is 7.7 ounces and the TA31 is 10.5. Add an RMR, which adds 1.2 ounces more to the TA31, and the TA33 is now a full 4 ounces lighter in weight. If you question any of these stats...research it for yourself...as these numbers can be found by just typing in the optic and weight into the google search engine.

This is super relevant. I separated my rifle venn diagram by embracing the SPR role on a 20" rifle by going with a 4-16 optic while keeping an ACOG or 1-8 LPVO on a 16". Still some overlap but less duplication.

I think there’s a use case for both. I’m a big fan of the bcm ELW uppers, a handy lightweight rifle is a great thing to have as a general purpose setup. Also having a stupid accurate no movement rifle is awesome.

I literally do not care what other people say when it comes to rifles and gear. I pick pieces that I personally agree with but generally don’t listen to the crowd marketing. The other day one of the range guards at my local gun range kept giving me the oddest advice about my LPVO making my gun to heavy…its 9.3 pounds total lol. Love the content!

In general, the lighter rifle tends to be the one more carried. The ACOG is probably my favorite general purpose optic because of that, especially when paired with its wide field of view. I find it hard to clarify to people through words just how much of a difference it makes when you're shooting multiple pop ups at range or even just watching multiple windows in MOUT. That being said, I love my SPR builds and recommend to get one if you are looking to increase your overall rifle skills. Even if you only have a 100 yard range available. If you have higher magnification on a 1 moa rifle, and you're not shooting 1 moa you know the problem is you. Which is great for shooters looking to improve as it eliminates/reduces as many variables as possible. For more casual shooters there is no deflection available, which I find many people blame their 3-4 inch group at 100 yards out of 1.5-2 moa rifles on the gear to protect their ego.
