In this video, we will look at the different extrusions rate problems. You can have over extrusion and under extrusion or just the right amount.
So I will show you the look of something that is over extruded, correct extrusion and under extrusion. You will see an example of each. And how to recognize this problem.
Then I will demonstrate how to measure the extrusion rate of your 3D printer, with a simple technic, and a direct way to calculate the percentage of correction needed.
And finally a quick word on how to adjust the rate the easily.

Hi, I'm Frank my channel is all about 3D printing. I can't get enough of my 3D printer. I make everything and anything out of 3D filament (PLA, PETG and more). As I say a printer that is not printing is a missed opportunity.
I'll be doing electronics, mechanics, computer engineering, DIY, reviews and tutorials.
I update twice a week on Tuesday and Saturdays.

One quick problem I found with the instructions is that you can't use the difference to find the percentage for correction. At smaller numbers it will be relatively close, but quickly escalates. You should divide the amount you told it to extrude by the actual amount extruded. In your case 100/96 gives 104.166%. This isn't much difference, but at 90 out of 100 the error is 1% (111% vs. 110%), and 80 out of 100 the error is 5% (125% vs. 120%).
@Franks3Dshop

You are right, but it is simplier that way, you just do it a couple of time and your good, +- 2mm on 100mm extrusion will not affect significantly the prints, you could always be more precise the way you describe.Thanks!

what if my prints are perfect bottom or near perfect, with perfect sides but the top seems like its over extruding? like it has deep ripples in the top. could this be from the nozzle hitting the surface? sometimes when it goes from one end to the other it will almost drag a little over the surface and leave a line where it went. what could be the issue?

I'm a clueless bambu lab X1C owner....but I'm learning. (Maybe a "push & go" machine isn't the best way to learn). What I got from this vid is what under/ over extrusion looks like! 👍 Thanks.🙏 My Lab printed 2 good prints, but now the extruder box keeps bashing the front door, (knocking the front cover off and telling me the cutter is stuck, but it isn't), laying shadow first layers in the corners or edge of the plate and over extruding. All the self calibrations change nothing. I've serviced the belts and now can try adjusting the flow rates in the right direction. Fun nightmare.😳

This helps a lot. A lot of my prints start to look like the over extrusion sample. My nozzle drags on the print and even broke the hot end heat brake. I do have a question though, if my prints still look like they are over extruded (after it prints all 100mm of filament) is there any other steps I can take to make it look normal?
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, I would say the you have to make sure that your nozzle size in your slicer correspond to the nozzle you have. Also if you drilled your nozzle to unclog it or if you have printed material with particles like wood filament or glow in the dark, your nozzle could be larger now, so you would need to replace it. And if you plan to print those types of filaments, change for a stainless nozzle.

My 3D printer does not give me access to the filament to be able to mark it as it goes through a bowden tube, etc. Is there another way of doing this?
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 6 жыл бұрын
You can do it just before it enters the Bowden tube before or after the extruder gear. You have to measure the length going to the hot end... if you can remove the Bowden tube, you could measure the filament coming out the extruder.

11th of December I purchase tronxy x5st-2e printer. I calibrate the extruder it's 106% I use cura 3.5 . But print is so under extrude .4mm nozzle .2 layer 106% flow. I increas the flow rate at every print . But print is under extruded every time. I found not good but ok flow rate at 500. My cr10s flow rate is 104 and it's perfect.
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 5 жыл бұрын
First I assume you do not have a partial clogging, do a couple of cold pull to clean up the nozzle if you are not sure. And verify that the filament size is correct in Cura and in the Tronxy with gcode ‘M404 W1.75’ if it’s 1.75mm and ‘M200 D0’ will revert back to linear extrusion instead of volumetric extrusion. After that issue a ‘M500’ to save everything.

It probably is partially clogged, if it is extruding with a little bend on the first millimetre, it probably is, I have some videos on of to clear a clog called a cold pull, kzfaq.info/get/bejne/buCjicJ3s5PdZKM.html you can also do it with the hot end in place, and just remove the teflon tube entering the hot end, push the blue plastic ring to pull it out, or unscrew the brass fitting.

@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 6 жыл бұрын
Yes if you want to do it in your slicer. I prefer to issue a M503 command using Printrun (or Pronterface, you can listen to my video kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9aHdq5_xs3OpX0.html to help using that software) connected via USB to the printer, look for the M92 line and the E97 (in my case it was 97 initially on the monoprice mini) add or subtract the percentage of error to that value. Issue a: M92 E100 M500 And do the same test again and see if you still get an error, until you are satisfied with the result. I presume here that you do not have a clog or results will be way off. My printer ended with a value of M92 E111 which is 14% more than the original. Does it make sense to you?

I have an Ender 3 pro. I calibrated the E-Steps so now 100mm extrudes dead on 100mm. I have flow rate set to 100% in Ultimaker Cura. I measured the filament and it's exactly 1.75mm measured multiple times in multiple places. The printer is brand new, nozzle is not blocked, and is 0.4mm. The settings in Ultimaker Cura are correct. Why does it still over extrude? I have had to set the flow rate to 90% but still the prints are over extruding. at 85%, it under extrudes. If all the math is correct, it shouldn't be over extruding right?
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 4 жыл бұрын
Your Nozzle could be out of specs not 0.4mm anymore or was never. If you print wood filament or glow in the dark for exemple, it would enlarge a brass nozzle pretty quickly say 200 grams fo filament...

I never used a ramps board myself, but first thing for the heating, you have to select the correct thermistor type, I know how to do it in Marlin but not in repetier, I suspect that you do not have the correct setup or it is not connect correctly. You could verify with an infrared thermometer if your temperature readings are correct. For the Z Axis, again in Marlin you can inverse the logic.

Hi, when you get layer shifts, something is skipping, it can be the belts that are loose, the motor current is too low, the bed is not level so the hot end bumps agains the already printed part. You can use Z-Hop in your slicer to help prevent the later. Let me know if it helps.

Hi, I will have to look at that video again it’s too late right now, but I think you get the idea, you extrude X amount (100mm is easy for calculating) and measure how much was taken. Than if the printer only took 90mm you know you are missing 10mm out of 100mm so it’s 10% under extrusion. Same thing if the printer took more than 100mm but it’s over extrusion that time. Does it answer your question?

When I adjust my extruder to extrude 100mm it massively over extrudes, so I set back to factory settings to get it near right on the flow, between 90-98% while it's printing. If I leave at 100% it seems fine until about 2 inches high and then it's grinding on the previous layer more and more until I reduce the flow. I've checked my Z steps and they are spot on so it must be extrusion.
@Franks3Dshop

I would verify your Z movements, seems to me that there is an error that accumulates layer after layer as if your Z steps/mm were off... Take a ruler and measure the movement to see if it’s accurate.

@@Franks3Dshop I have. I set it to a 100mm height and measured with a digital ruler and it read 100.0mm on the nose. I thought it was this too, but unless my ruler is off it seems to be not the case. It's weird because it doesn't look like it's over extruding, the layers don't have artifacts, blobbing or anything other than visible lines, which I think was my frame screws being slightly loose underneath and I've now tightened up. Unless this is what was causing the grinding while the carriage was wobbling as it got higher... I do have two spools sitting on top my frame and there was wobble before I found the loose screws. Maybe it was just that. I won't know until I do another tall print. But reducing the flow rate down to 90% and there being no gaps in the print when it still had about 8 hours to go doesn't make sense. I just realized something else though... I had turned the printer off half way though the print and used the resume function the next day. I wonder if it tried printing the last layer again and the extra extrusion had a cumulative effect? Thanks for the feedback.

I have a question that i need answered by an expert.... If i slice a model and its was done telling slicer to use a .06 nozzle and later on switch to a .04 nozzel will print fail do to extruding to much filament etc??? can this cause ringing etc of maybe cause extactor to start clicking /jamming??? i am having these issues i think... thanks
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, it's all possible yes, if the extruder is not strong enough to push the filament at the rate of a 0.6mm nozzle, it will skip steps and that would result in an under extruded print that would be fragile possibly with gaps and blobs.

on my ender 3 I get under extrusion on the back right corner of the print bed. I checked all the hardware and I can confirm it has something to do with the gcode not the printer. I am using cura 3.5 . when I use the default print file it is fine it only happens with cura gcode

Humm do not see why Cura would do that, maybe be if it’s jamming or rubbing in the ptfe tube at certain angles? Try to print only in the front opposite corner, if it still does under extrusion it’s Cura, if not it’s something physical on the printer. Maybe as to do with layer height, try 0.2mm with 0.3 first layer

Having the same issue with my Geetech A10M which is an Ender3 clone with dual extrusion. Cura 3.5 also. It seems to do weird things with infill, missing sections out while massively under extruding. It also prints strangely, where it would end on a layer, then travel all the way to the other side of the print and start the next layer from there. I've not used Marlin before so maybe I'm just not used to the print method.

Try some combing options, it usually helps. Make sure your extrusion is well calibrated and that the flow is 100% in Cura. I am also using Linear Advance in Marlin and resolves this and make better seems on the outside, you have to configure Marlin 1.1.9 to active it.

"Extruding filament percentage" is usually called "flowrate" or just "flow" (If you're using CURA, the setting is in the material tab). 1. You should calibrate your e-steps first. Changing the flowrate is just slapping a band-aid onto a problem that can easily be fixed permanently. 2. Usually, you set the flowrate percentage in your slicer, not on the printer. 3. Some firmwares (ex. professional firmware) allow you to change the flowrate during printing.

@@figuresix If I had to guess, I'd blame the hardware (for the under extrusion). Check if the extruder is properly assembled (my ender 3 v2 had the gear mounted too high up), check if the nozzle or heater block is clogged, try printing at higher temp, or slower speed, check the Bowden tube (sometimes they melt over time). If you are able to, check if you're getting the temperature you requested. Try posting on r/fixmyprint. Troubleshooting FDM printers is a pain in the ass. I wish you good luck.

Measure 120mm Extrude 100 mm Measure 24 mm 120mm - 24mm = 96mm A 4mm difference = 4%

Okay, he got 96mm at his current extrusion rate, say 100mm/s. So 100/96 = 1.0417, The current extrusion rate needs to be increased by 4.17%. TEST IT! 96 x 1.0417 = 100. Great! Now, if the current extrusion rate is not 100mm/s, then use whatever value it is set to in place of the 100 in the division above.
@Franks3Dshop
@Franks3Dshop 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, the 100 is there so you calculate de difference from 100 for your measured extrusion, you can use 200 and try to extrude 200 instead it will give you more precision. A difference of -2% is not an issue. And if you get some stringing you can backoff a little.

BAD advice. If your exxtruder does not extrude correct, you correct steps/mm in the settings and make sure 100mm extrusion is 100mm extrusion. Flor rate or slicer should not get involved in this - you also do not put a correction sheet iin your car if your tacho is bad. You fix the car. Fix the printer. Flow rate settings in the slicer should be independent and are there to handle - well, flow changes some models may need.
@Franks3Dshop

Yes you are right, and I talk about both solutions, but for people who are not able or not familliar with changing the firmware values, it works and you can save your slicer profile and reused it as a base with the modification no need to do it everytime.

@@Franks3Dshop The problem is that this starts biting you the moment you get a second printer or replace your printer. Rather learn how to use the firmware properly (it is not like this is not exposed in pretty much every UI). Funny enough that this actually HAS to be done - for a specific set of hardware it is not like the gears change between produced printers. Lame from the manufacturers.
