The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

One of America's finest singers. This is a classic victim song.

One of the most underrated singers of all time, in my opinion. Sure, she has received many accolades during the height of her career, but please understand just what an absolutely magnificent performer Eydie truly was. No other vocalist (male or female) could match her diction, voice control, emotion and raw talent. I'm expressing my personal opinions here, so you may not agree with them... but just listen to her sing...any song (especially this one) and you'll have to agree. What astonishes me the most is that Eydie makes it look so effortless. There is vocal happiness in her singing.... no matter the song. Today's younger generation should watch her videos and learn what pure, un-auto tuned singing sounds like. R.I.P. Eydie.... Love you!

Tomorrow will be the 10th anniversary of Eydie's passing. How ironic this would post. She could really sing and was so beautiful. No wonder Steve loved her the first time he saw her. I hope Steve is doing well.

I miss these great voices. They sang from the heart and gut. They didn't do the forced 'throat singing' sliding up and down the scale that passes as singing today.

Eydie was (still is) a fabulous singer. I oftenly listen to her recordings from my library. I know her peers admired and respected her. However, As the great singer she was (is) I still wonder if she was not underrated as a singer over all.. I place her among (specifically female singers) the E. Fitzgerald, J.Garland, S. Vaughn, B.Streisand, B. Holiday, P. Lee, L. Horne, R. Clooney, D. Day, B. Dearie, D. Washington, M. Whiting, among others.

I remember this song, listening to it on my grandmother’s transistor radio back in the 1960s. My mom took me to see the movie “Oliver” when it debuted in 1968. I was only 7 years old. Just spellbinding to hear Eydie sing. RIP ❤️🙏

A few days ago we had his cousin, Neil Sedaka, on this channel. Both are legends of 20th century popular music. Eydie Gorme not only managed to succeed singing in English but was also fluent in Spanish thanks to her Sephardic origin, and she was extraordinarily popular in the Spanish-speaking markets due to her collaborations with different Latin American bands and artists, especially the trio Mexican Los Panchos. About to celebrate the tenth anniversary of her death, this video is a beautiful tribute to her talent.

When you see and hear Judy Garland sing this song from "Oliver" on her TV show, where she sits on the stage belting out these lyrics, you figure that no one could ever come close to the intonation, the sound, the interpretation of the lyric......until you hear this version from Eydie. Eydie comes close.

I never appreciated Steve and Eydie during their 70's run as guest stars on dozens of shows. I since realized that they are/were both really, really good performers, and even moreso when they sang together. Steve Lawrence is still with us but reportedly very unwell.

This song is beautiful and tragic- the character is beaten to death by the man she loves. And so many women have suffered the same fate. Beautiful as it is, it should not be sung anymore. I hope we have permanently moved beyond women loving men who abuse them, and staying on, right or wrong.

A friend of mine worked at the Kutschers Theater in the Catskills for a few years. One night he needed to escort Eydie on stage from her dressing room. They walked down a very dimly lit corridor and he took her hand to guide her on stage. She turned to him and said..."No one holds my hand except my husband. You want to hold something, here, hold my wig.." I guess she didn't need him

Not at all. Listen to Barbra's earliest performances, they are entirely different. She loved Eydie, but never mimicked anyone, hence her stature.
@jadezee6316
@jadezee6316 8 ай бұрын
her stature is entirely dependent on the mediocrity of the american people.....in no universe is Streisand as good a singer as Edyie was...and to prove it you can go by their popularity which you consider stature...just where would you place the stature of Edyie if dependent on those same americans?..right..most would never have even heard of her...never depend on the american peoples intelligence to prove a point...my friend@@chrisn7259

As good as Eydie was and I almost hate to admit this, but once Judy Garland's version appeared the year before this on an episode of her variety series and Shani Wallis' version from the Oliver! movie musical in '68 came on the scene (and no offense, Shirley Bassey, but...), it became impossible for anyone else to perform this. And it appears this has held true through the ensuing years, as I don't recall another live TV performance of this song---at least in the U.S. Of course, correct me if I am wrong.

Sonia Swaby sang it live during the Hey, Mr. Producer! concert (filmed in the UK in 1998 and edited and aired as part of American PBS’ Great Performances). Nadia Turner and Melinda Doolittle each sang it live on American Idol (2005 and 2007 respectively). Since Oliver! has been touring the UK pretty much non-stop for decades and there was a British reality TV show in 2008 to pick a new Nancy, I can only imagine there have been countless TV performances of the song in the UK.
