My Dad was an At&t Long Lines Cable splicer by profession . He could make ANY splice look easy ! He could make this EYE splice on rope or cable in about 2 Minutes ! It takes me 10 to 15 mins . He did not need any taped ends or marks anywhere either , to complete it . And I Never saw Any one of them fail , or come apart : ) Cheers

I did them in the coast guard and to completely finish it we would tuck the 2nd and 3rd tails into the rope until the ends were all on the same side and then trim excess flush and on nylon would melt ends and smooth out the rope on hemp rope, we would whip the ends to finish to keep the rope from unraveling. To determine rope eye size we would fold rope with enough tail to complete splice with loop as big as needed or desired for rope size.

You could also taper the splice, by splitting the ends of the finished splice, in half then tuck one half of the rope one more time.

As with most splicing, or 'knots' videos the hard to see white on white on white becomes bewildering in EXACTLY what you are doing. Positions of each strand are thoroughly lost. NOW - if you were to find 3 same diameter and different colored twist ropes, take all 3 apart and rebuild 3 ropes (2 for later) with tri-colored strands and THEN 'whip' the bitter ends with corresponding colored electricians tape THEN you would have an easily understood demonstration tool. Yeah, I "Learned the Ropes" from a professional, nautical rope and cable splicer on the Philadelphia docks when I was 11 years old - almost 65 years ago - and never, ever 'lost it'. Everything from 1/4" to 2" hawsers I was surprised you didn't mention using a Fid. Easy to make and it makes splicing fast and easy. I was taught that three full repetitions were all that were needed on a full strength eye splice (Hemp or Nylon) and that your rolling of the finished splice between the hands "sort-a was OK", but the preferred way to set the finished rope work was to drop it on the floor and roll it with your foot for one or two seconds with just enough weight to change the set to the new configuration.

Years ago where I worked we had an average length box car that we had to pull up a slight hill to line up the next roof fill lid. We used a 11/4" thick 125'rope to think they called it a windlgress. Would wrap 5 wraps around it then start it up. Would break at least once a month and only guy who could splice like the one you did was a retired navy guy. Guys would try using a two halve hitch and would break before moving box car an inch. You make a difficult job look easy. Thanks

I learned this using hemp which has high friction compared with synthetic fibres, so I can understand the extra length of the splice. What I don't understand is the precise 2'0" measurement at the start. Surely, you would unravel the strands and then make the size of the eye to suit the situation. Wouldn't you?

That 2' was sort of misleading implying math is even needed. Just make the eye the size you need.

How I did it was First un-lay and tape the ends as he did. Then just bend the line back forming a loop of the size you want. That is where you start your tucks. As he showed there are two fixed points, the first is where the black Sharpie mark was the other was the taped point where the line was un-layed that kept the three strands together.. The distance between will be the size of the eye.

You can do as you please with the ends, The strength of the splice is in the tucks. Do nothing with the ends or taper them it all depends on how you want them to look and whether the ends could possibly snag on something in use.
