You have the best tutorial on how to splice a rope with the colour coded instruction ever seen on on KZfaq. It make the knowledge learning instantly and correctly to where each strand of rope goes to intertwined. This is how a tutorial should be especially for layman like us.

FINALLY!!! a video where I can actually see what is happening without the hands getting in the way! Thank You VERY much. It helped a bunch to see the colors going through the rope. Several other tutorials start out with middle , right, left and then switch to top, middle, bottom in the middle of explaining the splice. I was really getting frustrated.

Really a good starter video to figure out how to get the pattern started. I don't use tape at all, I use heat shrink and at the ends, I leave it a little long so it shrinks down to form a point so it's easier to weave it through. With tape, it always wants to push apart and make it harder to weave. Keep up the great work.

After making your weave, roll it between your hands back and forth or roll it on the ground with your foot back and forth, it tightens up the weave.

Well that's made a simple task ridiculously easy. I actually felt the penny drop on the third insert. everyone else I've seen works sideways and then, after two strands says, "now for the hardest step" while changing hands and rotating the work like a three card trick. You hold the rope vertical and repeat the same action three times while rotating the rope clockwise. Reset by rotating anti clock and repeat. I don't know how I (or they) managed to complicate things - but now I'm fixed. Many thanks!

This was amazing! I've always been mystified by this skill, but the way you explained it, with the colours and all, simplified it by MAGNITUDES. I'm actually confident that If I watch this two more times I can do it. The only thing you didn't mention though is how much of the rope to run out before you start splicing, or how strong the splice is when you're done.

I love the eye splice. I have a length of 1/2" Manilla with an eye splice in my truck right now. I'm in my early 60s and just about all of my friends' fathers were in WWII. Every time one of my Baby Boomer friends sees a rope I have spliced, his eyes light up and he says "My Old Man used to do that to his ropes. He learned it in the Navy (or Marines)." My understanding is that a splice is stronger than a knot.

Some of the things I learn (such as this) are not only useful, but I learn these things in part, as a tribute to my dad. A WWII Marine who served at Guadalcanal. One of those guys who was "larger than life" and missed by almost everyone who ever met him.

@jakeblanton6853 4 жыл бұрын
A *good* splice is about 90% as good as the original rope. A knot most definitely weakens the rope, but some knots are a lot worse than others. I haven't seen any comparisons on a proper splice of the ropes vs just being sewn together like you see with straps.
