EZ How to Make a Trellis From Old Sunflower Stalks | MIgardener

This DIY trellis can be made for free, and can be used to support your
plants. Made from sunflower stalks, it is not only 100% decompostable,
but it is sustainable as well! Hope you will give this a try, and let
us know what you use on it. Its great for cucumbers, beans, tomatoes,
ect. So get creative!

Use thick thread it will hold good .. if you are using natural material thread soak the thread in water( fibers expand) and tie when it dries it auto tights ( as fibers contract) ;)

Just now watching this. Not sure if you will see this comment. Next time for the tripod trellis, use the Tripod Lash; for the ladder trellis try the Square Lashing on each intersection. Super easy to learn and tie. I was a Boy Scout and raised two Eagle Scouts. Love your channel. Keep it up!

I'm kicking myself. I just cut up a bunch of my sunflower stalks and put them in the compost pile. I won't make that mistake again. Thanks for sharing.

oh yes! great idea! If you make them, please bring us along. I would be not only interested to see what you make, but to see what you think about sunchokes as a viable material for this. I have lots of those as well. Also, what I was thinking is that this project is hands down one of the most sustainable things one could do in terms of trellising material. And it can all be composted later!

I plant extra sunflowers specifically for this purpose, besides who doesn’t love cheery sunflowers 🤷🏻‍♀️

Sunflowers are actually amazing. Pretty much the whole plant is edible, but the stems are just too useful to eat

I had 9 foot tall okra last season. Its easily sturdy enough to use for this.

I had this idea this morning and I'm glad I'm not the only one who wants to use these tall you-know-what's for trellises! My dad wants to smoke the dried leaves, and I get the stalk and seeds, everyone wins! I had wimpy bamboo stakes holding them up, but I think it's the other way around now!!

Such a smart idea! I grow a ridiculous number of sunflowers in my side yard. I've just been walking on them to add more organic matter, but I love this idea so mych more

Great video! Also I like tie wire (sold in the concrete supplies at hardware) and twist to tighten...easier than tying strings. Wire will rust but still last at least as long as the stalks.

Great use of sunflower stalks Luke. Like you said, it won't last forever but if you are in a place where you can grow peas over winter it would be perfect or store it away for your beans in the spring.

exactly! we will grow more sunflowers next year, use these trellises, and then make new ones next year. It works out perfectly!

Great idea Luke. My sunflowers got mangled by the really early snowstorm we had here in early September, and won't work for it, but I'm going to keep this video handy to remind me to keep the ones I should (weather permitting) have at the end of next season.

Outstanding! I absolutely love it. Can't wait to make my own. Think I will store the stalks and make the trellises in the spring. I think I will put more legs on my teepee and some ladder up between the legs...Sturdier bean support. Love it. Thanks again Luke.

We would LOVE it! the best thing about this project is the amount of options you have, because the sky is the limit since your imagination is your own, and you can build on it, or add pieces, or make your own shapes as needed.

that would work indeed! I have used branches before as well. They work amazing, and if you get the right ones, they can last many seasons.

You should try making some yourself. I would be intrigued to see your take on them, and also the fact that they are super sustainable. It all composts down when its done. How is your garden doing? anything left?

I will see if I can find someone who has stalks leftover. It would make for some interesting garden features! With the SUPER early frost we had there is not much left outside. my fall/winter greens are doing well and the cover crops are still going but other then that the perennials as just getting ready for winter. once I am done this cycle of brewing ill start up my indoor garden again and get back to my home grown veggies. How is your garden doing? It looks like you have missed the early frosts

I've read about sunflowers having an effect against weeds the same way Eucalyptus trees keep stuff from growing near them. I have saved my stalks for a trellis, but I am very curious to fully understand the effects of allelopathic chemicals and how they are suppressive. I would love it, if you could make a video on this. My non understanding of these things is making me hesitant to put sunflowers in the compost. I love them for soil building and biomass and would love to compost them. I am just unsure of the effects it would have. Thank you for your videos and teaching people how to feed themselves. With out that solved nothing matters because you are sick and hungry. I think it may be the most important thing one can learn.

I put my sunflowers behind my basil, marigolds,and strawberries and everything grew wonderfully. Kept the bugs away and brought the pollinators in.

oh, I also cut down a small ever green and used some of the sturdy limbs to help stalk and box in the last of my growing squash, anything I can safely use for free is a plus in my book!

Interesting question! I don’t think there would be a problem if left to dry out for long enough. Would need assessing when you come to planting stuff on it though!

I’d love to try this, but I have had a problem with ants burrowing into the stalk and destroying it as the flower is still blooming. Any idea on what I can do to stop them without harming the plant?

absolutely! I am sure you could soak in some oils. Even a cheap oil like linseed, or vegetable oil would help a lot.

indeed! it is very cheap (free) and also, it composts down in the end and you can feed your plants, and make more the same year! its one of the best ideas I have ever came up with, and I think everyone should try it.

Speaking of compost(just throwing this one in there), my compost pile will heat up, then cool down, so how can I keep a hot batch going or is it suppose to kool down until I build it up again? Plus we have been getting lots of rain so the temp has also cooled down. Just asking?

Javandab Rhunt you can keep it hot by adding more nitrogen, keeping it damp,and by adding a dark colored tarp to insulate the heat in.

You really need to work on your lashing skills! On the other hand, I don't imagine those stalks would take too tight of knots. Other than that, great idea!
