Today I loaded a cherry log onto my home made sawmill and followed the procedure from Woodmizer for EZ Quarter Sawing. Quarter Sawing is very labor intensive requiring the cant to be turned many times. I would recommend having a helper if you choose to try this method. The end result produced some nice riff sawn and quarter sawn 5/4 cherry lumber. The procedure can be found here woodmizer.com/us/Tips-and-How...

As a WoodMizer owner making my living by sawing for over 24 years, I was surprised that they suggested quarter-sawing this way. I found this on their website and you got it somewhat right. You are ending up with about equal quantities of flat, rift and and quarter-sawn, which is not necessarily a bad thing but if you follow the WoodMizer directions you will get mostly quartered with a bit of rift and no flat. Also, I cut many yard tree logs and saw through lots of hardware. At first I did like you and looked the blade over for damage. It's not always easy to see the rounded teeth, but don't fool yourself. Also, you knock the set out of the teeth. Do yourself a favor and change blades. Remember, a bad day of sawing is way better than a good day in the office

You are correct one ended up with a variety of cuts of cherry. I have not tried this method again because it seems harder to do this way. Lots of flipping and turning. I have since encountered a variety of foreign objects in the wood and you are correct a lot of time the teeth are not visually damaged but the set is gone. I just do this for fun it's been a good learning experience so far.

What plans did you use to build your saw mill? Id like to build one so i can cut longer logs
@thedelcodave
@thedelcodave 2 жыл бұрын
I did not use plans. I watched Matthew Cremona's big sawmill build it is very informative. Took design elements from his mill and scaled it down. Also studied videos from cooks sawmills, timberking, woodmizer and diy builds. I incorporated different features I liked from each brand to build my own. I just recently found a FB group called Home Made Sawmills. They have a wealth of info that would have been very helpful knowing about that resource before starting a build. If you watch the video building a sawmill in 12 minutes you can see the logical progression I followed on the build. Start with the band wheels with tension and tracking and build from there on. The carriage is the main component the trailer is easy and can be built to accommodate any sawmill carriage.

Wow thats kinda a bummer unless you like cutting dimensional lumber. I am pretty lucky we have a wide variety of lumber types. My goal is to mill as many different types that I can source locally.

@@aaronymousunlimited2661 I saw your benches are beautiful I am definitely going to try to make one of them. Also considering making a cookie cutter attachment that was a good idea. I have an idea in my head to make a slab flattener that uses the mill bed and rails and has its own carriage to carry a router or large electric motor to drive the cutter head.

Man, os it the camera, or is that saw cutting ocean waves? it seems like it drifts up and down a ton.

You will get more rift then quartered with this method

I can confirm because most of the wood ended up rift sawn. I don't think there is truly any easy way to quartersaw lol.

I’m confused with the American way off quarter sawing, we classic wise cut them like a orange segment and square them off.

I agree I am still confused how this produced quarter sawn. I can see some but alot is riff sawn. Seems like a ton of work.

@@thedelcodave Yeah, only about half your boards are ,but for a fairly small log you got some really good boards and some utility grade. I figure you know now you're not going to get rich with a manual mill anyhow so as long as you had fun it was a good day milling, right?

@@timothylongmore7325 definitely won't get rich that's for sure. I had fun designing and fabricating my mill. I enjoy learning the milling process. Most all the wood I use for my own projects or give the wood to friends.
