I participated in XV-5A Vertifan program. MY participation was instrumental to the program. I was litterally instrumented. I was the pickup dummy. You are welcome for my suffering and sacrifice.

I met Val Scheifer in Isla Mujeres, MX about 1997. He is who is flying the plane in this video. He was very bitter the US chose the Harrier over the Ryan plane. I spent many happy days having coctails with him on his boat Camelot. He was quite old in 97 and said many times, I don,t even know why I am talking to you. Your so young. I was about 40 then.

Brilliant aircraft design. With all the available high tech propulsion systems, avionics, digital control electronics, computer control systems and weapons, this aircraft could perform much better today.

Also called an F-35. Jet engine? Check. Liftfan? Check. The F-35 gets lots of hate, but the aircraft itself is great. Program management, on the other hand, was horrible. Sure the F-35 has lots of teething issues, but those are minor and are getting fixed by the month.

I agree, it would be 100 percent improved. I think it was good then. But I guess the Helo did it all that this jet did

This looked like a feasible piece of equipment. Less complex than the Harrier. I know the V5A could not do what the F35B does, but it looked like it could be used for ground support easily

Truly gamechanging vehicle!!! If this thing had just 12 Hellfires onboard and a belly mounted 20mm cannon it could loiter for seriously accurate ground attack missions, then speed off and reposition hovering right down in the weeds, a true hybrid attack platform.. Obviously destroying many defense aerospace racketeers gravy trains.

The wings could be moved up to extend from the top of the fuselage to facilitate this for air sea rescue and the fusalage widened. With modern techniques and newer technologies would allow this to be more achievable and affordable for the navy the military or the air corp air force. But the one shown here would be capable of ground attack in areas where other aircraft would find it difficult to Manoeuvre where the Ryan would be at home like the harrier or even better.

thanks for sharing. as a former Harrier engineer I have loved watching this. im intrigued to know if in the vertical operating mode did the engines need water cooling? the Harrier could only last 2.5 mins in hover mode

There is a lot lot of space for water tanks together with fuel tanks for hours of fight and hoovering. It´s a commercial and not more.

It looks like the V5A could hover for longer. I'm not sure how they corrected the cooling of the engine.
@ericzaiz8358
@ericzaiz8358 3 жыл бұрын
@@thetreblerebel They didnt need cooling, unlike the Harrier the XV5 didnt need to run at full power to VTOL due to how the Lift Fans ran. The GE-J85 ran alot cooler at full power then the Pegasus anyways, so the regular air flow was enough to keep the engine from melting This system did have its cons, the inside was full of piping need to redirect the jet thrust to the fans, and unlike the harrier said fans was useless in level flight becoming dead weight. Which limited its fuel and payload. Also you had to be careful when to turn on the fans, to slow and you stall. Too Fast and you went out of control, one of the pilots did when he hit the switch by mistake going about 200 knots and the ejection seat kill him. You had like a 40 knot window between stalling at 80 knots and loosing control at 120. The Harrier can go from full speed to ZERO within a few moments. A modern version with Computer control be great but well, stuff expansive and no one wants to do that... If I had the money...

The rescue mission scenarios all assume the downed pilot is not only conscious but physically capable of attaching himself onto a harness he might barely even be able to locate in the sea spray. Ridiculous.

This is a very interesting video, with 'wonky' music. But, as we know, the British AV-8B Harrier became the VSTOL fighter/bomber. Presumably, the payload and speed capability was bested.

Horseshit. Even this "proof of concept" prototype could fly for more than 800 miles! A production model would have more range, speed and hard-points.

Awesome but wrong concept they focus on building a plane that hover, instead of that they could focus on build a helo/hover aircraft that fly faster than a helicopter.
