I remember these at Nellis AFB in '71 & '72. We called it the flying Coke bottle. Like all aircraft, it had folks who liked it, and folks that didn't. The thing stood tall, and I found it a challenge to work on with that M-61 in the left side nose. But I talked to pilots that liked it very much. Y'all have a great day, and God Bless.

Dave Blevins Was the coke bottle name because of its pinched waist? Something to do with area rule to enable supersonic speeds.

I have an older cousin (more like an uncle) who was a communication officer in Viet Nam. He gave me a model of a 105 when I was a kid. I am in my 50's now. Only about 10 years ago did I finally realize the true significance of this aircraft in that conflict.

It was fabulously futuristic considering biplanes were being built 20 years earlier than it was designed. Mind-boggling.

Newly assigned as a Crew Chief to a F-105G. She’ll never fly again but I want to get to know her and make her look good at our museum. Hope to be able to open both canopies someday and do sone paint touchup.

Those first digital computers were monstrous. But for the time, they were the scientific cutting-edge.

Worked on them in the late 50's and early 60's at Seymour Johnson. The B models were real junk. We had all aft sections off, engines removed on October 22, 1962. Put them back together and they flew to MCO (McCoy AFB, Orlando, FL) during the Cuban Missle Crisis. All were loaded with a-bombs. Glad the Russians blinked.

The first American jet of this type to have a huge 100amp hour NICAD battery 🔋, she could run all systems for over 2 hours ,fantastic at the time,still amazing today.

Interesting factoid: Canada considered the F-105 for its European tactical strike commitments in the early 1960's. Had the RCAF moved forward with the acquisition, Canadian Thunderchiefs would've likely used Orenda PS.13 Mk 2 Iroquois engines instead of the J-75 P-19W. Artist's renditions here: (421 'Red Indian' squadron and 441TFS (C)F-105's) combatace.com/files/file/14445-the-other-cf-105-cf-105-thunderchief/ As it turned out, license-built CF-104 Starfighters filled the role.

This aircraft was my all time favourite. As far as I am aware it only made one brief visit to the UK in the seventies to a base in Norfolk. 16 ANG aircraft came for 2 weeks I think. Can anybody confirm this?

Larry Mitchell Good to know you Larry. My name is Jerry Robinson. I was was in the 469 TFS at Korat AFB Thailand in 1966 from January to December. I was a crew chief. Great duty. That 105 was a power house of a plane and I loved working on them.

They were flying missions in some of the most dangerous pieces of airspace in the world before proper SEAD doctrine was developed. The F-105G Wild Weasel was one of the first aircraft to pioneer SEAD tactics.

I just had a question. In the video about the F-86 Saber why were comments turned off? Were commenters getting nasty about what I can only assume to be confusion between fifty caliber (.50, a half inch or 12.7mm) and fifty millimeter (about 2 inches)?
@pimphand004 жыл бұрын
Yes arguments were breaking out in the comment section. Other KZfaqrs were also complaining as well. So just turned the comments off.

Early on the F-105 was designed for nuke deliver. The bomb was pushed out by a piston. Later the internal bomb bay was turned into a fuel tank. It stayed a fuel tank. Why do I know this and you do not mention it.
@joseftrumpeldor62405 жыл бұрын
James Holder This is mentioned in documentaries but not in this film, which dates from 1956.
@THE-BUNKEN-DRUM4 жыл бұрын
It's common knowledge for those in the know. Technically you're right about the bombay. In the instead of carrying bombs, it just usually carried a spare fuel tank. It wasn't changed, or modified in any way.
