On this channel we like to do a lot of dogfighting most videos are some sort of dogfight between 2 different aircraft as we explore their different capabilities. From time to time I like to dabble in Virtual Reality, I think VR is a great new technology and I love to show that stuff off for the channel from time to time.
If you prefer more up close and personal dogfights consider the IL-2 Sturmovik: Great Battle series and experience intense WWII aerial combat over famous battlefields such as Stalingrad, Moscow, Rhineland and Normandy. Fight in and against Russian, American, German, British warbirds such as the P-51 Mustang, P-47 Thunderbolt, Bf-109, FW-190, Spitfire, Hurricane and rugged IL-2 Sturmovik attack plane. You can also fly legendary SPADS, Fokkers and Camels in WWI dogfights over the trenches of WWI and discover your inner Red Baron! And all of this can be experienced in jaw dropping virtual reality!

I dont know about "rivalry" in full arms combat only way Cat will survive is to never allow Flanker to merge, because in wvr combination of nose authority, high offbore Archers and HMS means F-14 doesnt stand a chance

@@Asghaad Doesn't that describe the entire operational doctrine of the F-14 though? Flying in groups and firing missiles at stand off range, then retreating behind second or third layers of F-14s also firing missiles at stand off range. If they get to the merge the F-14 crews have already failed.

@@fix0the0spade yes precisely, the issue is F14 is obsolete outdated design with missiles from eighties while Flankers got continually upgraded and got better armaments to close the BVR gap. Phoenix is old analogue missile and Russians already have ones that exceed it in ecery way (r-33 and r-37) so BVR capabilities are simmilar, but in WVR with missiles any SU-27 variant will dominate the TomCat. and In this scenario of "guns only" the rules are stacked against the Flanker because he is restricted from using his superior thrust to create energy advantage by extending from unfavorable ratefight but at the same time prohibited from using his greatest advantage in high off bore missiles... as always one of the oponents is fighting with one hand tied behind his back here, when realiatically the F-14 isnr really a match for a Flanker anywhere outside extreme range BVR unless you hamstring it by unbalanced rules of engagement.

@@Asghaad The Tomcat was a greater BVR interceptor at 80's and 90's. Just remember one thing, R33 during 80's and 90's have inferior range to the Phoenix missile and r37 was just a prototype withou any operational service until 21 century. While the Tomcat isn't a macht in a dogfight he still dominate the BVR engagement with a better radar even in the "A" variant.

A pilot's got to know his aircraft, a dogfight pushes you to learn its capabilities where BVR doesn't give you that. I doubt dogfights are going to be a feature in future air wars but having pilots who are that in tune with the fighter is going to give them a whole other level of confidence when it comes to the fight, even at BVR.

Its almost an AHC exercise. But BVR forces you to learn your capabilities as well, just in different ways. It's much more complex and difficult.

I am ex USAF and love the F-15s but there is a special place in my heart for the F-14s as well. ( Trying to be fair and not including the Gen 5s F-22 F-23 F-35 and Su-57 SU-75 " Checkmate " in the Gen 4+ generation but I like those as well. ) For me the F-12 ( YF-12A Weaponized SR-71 if had been put into production ) F-14 and F-15 are my favorite tactical Gen 4+ aircraft for American NATO side. For the Russian USSR/CCCP Wasar pack side, I like the Mig-25/ Mig-31 Mig-29 and SU-27 thru 35 variants.

Been an Air Traffic Controller in the military and the DoD as a civilian since 1996. Worked tens of thousand of tactical fighters in Military Operating Areas (MOAS). The merge is still practiced by all branches, but particularly the Navy/Marine Corps for the purpose of a guns fight. The military clearly still believes a guns fight to be in the realistic realm of combat, so I see your videos with guns only as quite plausible. Great video as always!

The ones who thinks a gunfight would be unreal nowdays have no clue how chaotic a real war can be. Even next to all the leading edge technologies are used. Theories are nice, but experience and practical things can lead to different results. Again, can, and not absolutely does everytime! It is true that the relevant scenario has not a lot of chance to happen, but its not even close to the impossible, so it is worth and neccessary to prepare against it by pilots even today. Because of this too its nice to see these videos, but in my opinion this kind of content would be also enjoyable and entertaining if it would be absolutely, totally no chance to happen, which is not true. :)

These types of dogfights are the most intense content and the most remarkable imo. Incredible stuff. These fights would never be realized without simulators because of the human lives and millions of $ in equipment involved. This is a great display of combat pilot fundamentals as always.

The reason you do gun fights is because these newer jets are built for super maneuverability and they will never actually use it to it’s designed performance by getting close in and using guns to see how these jets actually perform without bvr fox 3 or fox 2’s it’s awesome

I think the guns only fight - while not especially relevant in Today's combat environment, does showcase pilot skill, tactical decision making and aircraft kinematic abilities in ways that a BVR or close range Fox 2 fight simply cannot. And its far more entertaining than "climb as high as you can, accelerate to mach snot, release missile at green circle when pleasant female voice says so" Or "look at other plane and shove a HOBS fox 2 up his ass in one turn" (Although the Israeli '16 and python 5 does provide some interesting and fun lulz in that regard) As an avid viewer - i appreciate the gunfights. Keep it up!

I've watched a decent number of your vids. Of those this is far and away your best dogfight. Normally I scream "roll.... roll... No you need to roll right now. Roll now or your going to die!!" At least once per video. This video? Not one time, it was all "roll... rol.. niiiice, no roll a little b... perfect! Just relax and stay in the pocket. Don't panic you've got him. You've already won just don't fuck it up". Put some music in the background music and you could sell tickets to the stage play. In all seriousness, this was extremely impressive stuff 👍

I can think of two very real possibilities for guns coming into play in modern air combat: First, stealth aircraft fighting each other may be unable to get a lock, and be forced into a guns fight. Second, a situation where you have to be _certain_ of your target before engaging. In DESERT STORM, pilots were required to visually verify their target before firing to ensure they weren't allied or civilian. This could easily lead to an in-close fight.

I find it interesting your thoughts on 1v1 guns only. Isn't it that same mentality that caused the kill rate to be so poor during the first part of Vietnam and Topgun to be formed? I do enjoy that 1v1 arena though, learning how best to counter the parry and thrusts of an opponent and how best to win the day. Its always a joy watching you fly, especially the Tomcat. To that end would you consider doing a series on the Zone 5 campaign? Focused just on the engagements you could give your thoughts on how best to counter the various scenarios. To been out long enough now I don't think it could be counted as giving spoilers. Would be great getting your analytical thoughts into that phenomenal campaign.

The vertical is SO feared among new BFM pilots, real and/or sim. Like talking on the radio to newbie pilots, even experienced general aviation drivers will plot their flights for the least amount of controller interaction. As far as vertical BFM, no matter how smart you think you are in horizontal BFM, remember what Spock said in Star Trek Two, an oldie but a goodie. I wouldn't discount the value of guns, even in modern air combat. An F-22 could easily use up its six AMRAAMs and two Sidewinders in a single sortie, then rely on its guns for self-defense. In the Iran-Iraq war, a famed Iranian F-14 pilot is known to have favored using guns to save the precious limited supply of AIM-54 Phoenix missiles in Iranian inventory. Guns are also immune to decoys and electronic jamming. Of course, you wouldn't plan to run out of missiles, but war has a way of interfering with the best laid plans.

I feel it's going to be an air to air gunfight in modern combat. We claim each other's Aircrafts are better because they can strike from long distances or has RCS. But the only way to truly prove it is to take it old fashioned and test each other's skills.
