I have 2009 F150 with 5.4 3V. I did the lockouts on the phasers about 100,000 kms ago and has been great. I upgraded to the melling oil pump while in there too. It's been good as gold. The other day hubby brought it home and said it went into limp mode and the engine light as well as the wrench light was on (the engine will always be on with the lockouts). I found it had about 15 codes. Almost impossible that so many codes came up at one time. I KZfaqd to learn it might be the canister purge valve so changed that. It didn't change.I crawled underneath to look at the O2 sensors as I had replaced the exhaust manifold weeks prior and thought I might have hit a wire off or something. All good. After close inspection underneath the truck I found a wire broken on the solenoid to the fuel vapour storage canister. I pulled the solenoid off to test it as well just for s+g. It was good. I fixed the wire, put it back together and voila.....all good again. Something so simple. The dealership would have replaced everything of those codes and I would have been out probably about $1,000. Just saying. KZfaq is great. Im just a nurse but love the challenge of fixing our vehicles. Thanks to all of you for your input, experience and sharing. Ive learned it all from you people.

Here's a good tip for you 1 go to a thicker oil. Don't use Lucas oil treatment as that will gum up the entire system, instead use either SAE 30 or a 10W40. 2 - get a House screen - one that has a frame installed in front of your condenser coil as this will keep the road rash and bugs out of your condenser coil and the fins wont get damaged, This is one thing that Someone did on my 2008 F250 and Boy did it ever save my system so I get maximum air flow across all my coolers...

“You picked a fine time to leave me Lucille, with 4 hungry kids and a crop in the field” that’s what song I was singing when my Harley Davidson Edition 5.4l 3v decided to light up the “Check engine” warning and throwing codes like a baby tossing empty milk bottles out the crib as soon as I started it up with all new phasers, timing chains and guides, roller followers, high volume oil pump, etc..ty for the video

You may have another oil pressure issue. I had broken chain guide pieces in oil pickup tube. I also had old style roller rocker with big holes in them. My truck is a 2005 5.4. I did rebuild engine and it’s a beast to get all torques and engine removed and rebuilt. They had two blocks versions plus difference in spark plug head design. Also, they had two cam bolt sizes for my year so you had to check which one to get torques correct. I changed all my head bolts connecting rods and main bearing bolts too because of once used they were no good to reuse. I upgraded everything in the rebuild and I still have my cam phases working. Roller rockers with smaller holes and set at a better angle to help oil pressure plus new style oil pump. I use 5w-30 oil now to help with oil pressure too. Of course I bored engine and replaced all bearings and one head. You have to inspect wire harness and make sure every connection is in good shape.

90% of these engines will have some scoring on cam caps. Perfectly normal on a high mileage engine. Not the end of the world. That’s where the high volume high pressure oil pump helps out. Oil changes, correct filter and all Ford timing components makes all the difference in keeping these things on the road for hundreds of thousands of miles

Great video thanks for sharing my 09 f-15 5.4 Was just locked out and tuned i have over 243k miles and no issues but figured i lock them now before it acts up. No check engine light after tune and runs great just a bit of gas but nothing new. You can send in the computer to get the custom for $100 once the cams are locked its worth it on higher mileage engines if you wanna get a bit more life outta it. My body and intererior are great so once this motor goes i might just drop in another 5.4

Thank you for your video. Onepoints I'd like to make and I have a question as well. For anyone dealing with the phasers, whether you're doing a lockout or replacing them, you need to know the torque values and when putting it back on after torqueing the bolt (to 30) you have to turn it an additional 90 degrees. My question is other than the engine light staying on is there any problem not doing the programming after the lockout? Thank you!

My phaser on passenger side failed completely,the mechanic that worked on my truck previous to me purchasing it used the original bolts,one stretches and stripped the pin on the cam and phaser,I'm broke and need my truck to run.so I removed the cam,lined up where it should be,and welded it solid.

I did a lock out and it runs good. New heads with everything is $450 per side!!! So far i'm still on the fence about spending that much money. For now it runs fine just with a check engine light on -(for the cam phase's)

You have to use Motorcraft oil filters for the Ford Modular engines, it has a silicone valve built into the base that traps the oil, so it’s available at startup. If you don’t use the Motorcraft filter you will end up with broken timing chain guides, bad phasers and damaged cams & caps.

every single 3 valve chain tensioner will leak. its a shit design from factory. replace them with tensioners for a 2 valve, they're much more reliable. aside from starving the phaser of oil, the camshafts are equally starved due to the leak at the tensioner.

You need to do a hot oil pressure check at a specific location. If you do have good oil pressure you most likely have crappy aftermarket phasers.

@@andrewtenbrink700 my gut is telling me no because they’re either pressurized or they bleed off based on the position of the actuator solenoid. I would bet that they can leak between the cam and the phaser though. It’s always best to go back with oem parts

I will tell you that on a high mileage engine replacing the heads will be OK for maybe 500 miles. The new heads will put too much pressure on the lower end and and will cause a bearing to spin or other things. If it were me and the frame is good I would put a crate engine in.

Runs fine. Just the codes are on for the phases. I just think the oil pressure in the cams with all the scoring cant be fixed. The only true way fixing is new heads. $500 a piece! Ford should be made to replace all the crappy cam phases heads!

Not really. Just the check engine is on as expected. Still not wanting to pay $800 for new heads that ford should never developed for the 4.6. cam phaser knocking crap. I have the lock out kit installed. Seems ok tho.

Can I inspect that same cam cap without removing the phaser? Just wanna make sure I won’t damage the cam if I remove that bigger cap while there is pressure on it.

Depends. Crank bearings are harder than the aluminum heads with no bearings. Always lesser oil pressure on top. Oil has a long ways to get to the top.

Someone else made a comment about your oil filter as well. You must not care too much about that engine using a Fram filter. They are notorious for blowing up & throwing junk around inside the engine. I've been to Ford dealerships confirming this. Stick with Motorcraft, WIX or Purolator ONE series or Boss series filters.

So I have a Ford Raptor 2010 they just did the cam sensor tell me the cam sensor thing and they did the lockout on it I'm assuming it's exactly what you just did I don't know for sure but they also left a five-star tuning box on my passenger seat what is that can you tell me

The other thing is I just bought the truck obviously it was used but all of a sudden now I'm bringing it in they were telling me it was 2500 I talked to myself guy he said well the dealership will pay $900 and you pay $900 well my 900 wind up being 1200 does that sound right

if the melling doesnt provide enough pressure, what oil poump would?

It would under normal wear conditions (just light scratches nothing really bad) a melling pump would probably take care of the oil pressure at the heads. But my condition was not normal, My camshafts were pretty bad, grooved into the head from previous oil starvation. Wish they would have bearings instead of a cam riding on a aluminum head. My only fix is new heads....Ugh......$$$$$ $500 per side. Good news is I can do it if i want to spend the $$.

Nothing has perplexed me more than f@#_&&@# cam phasers on my 2010 absolutely beautiful King ranch expedition. Can’t say for sure but the phasers don’t appear to be Ford phasers. If you’re not using all Ford parts then you are asking for trouble with this system

@@FixingWithPassion..Did you drop your oil pan and check your oil pick up? I'm curious how clean or dirty it was. You changed alot of parts , IE: oil pump etc., but your bearing was scored pretty good due to lack of oil. Though maybe your oil pan pick up(filter) may have been plugged thats all.

Ty for the excellent video. SUB’d. Question: you say that your truck is throwing codes and tge check engine light is on, is it necessary to clear the codes periodically/daily to keep the engine running ok? My fear is that without clearing the codes the engine will go to limp mode or simply run bad.

​@Hardhead 705 if your cam phasers are bad you can get reduced performance or reduced economy. There's also a possibility that metal can come off it constantly hits

@@catinthehat5140 let the truck set for a few weeks. Started it up and no knock sound anymore. They started functioning again. Cold start oil equals higher pressure. I assume.

@Hardhead 705 most cam phasers use oil pressure. There's a solenoid that opens a value to let the oil in. The oil pushes something to change the cam position (I think). Search for humble mecahnic golf cam phaser. It the f150's is the same design it might explain it. Also maybe the solenoid is weak but if it rests it works for a bit.

I have 285.000 miles on my 5.4 never had the valve covers off I change my oil at 3000 miles end of the story.

Yeah, nice. I have the 4.6 with 249,000 miles, change every 3000 with synthetic and have a cam phase knock intermittently now. Regular maintenance is great but wont automatically keep this from happening. I replaced the right cam phaser it still happens. It may happen 2 or 3 times in one trip, or it may not do it for several days. No check engine light. Love my truck, but I'm over it at this point.

Get rid of that truck. Those 3 valve engines are nothing but garbage and money pits. You'll fix one thing on that truck and two more will break. I know I had one. Get a dodge or a Chevy if you want a truck.
