We sit down one on one and hear Air Force F-16 fighter pilot Major Matt Chisam’s story. Major Chisam has flown combat missions in both Iraq and Afghanistan and continues his service today by leading and commanding a squadron of his own.
Matt shares his a perspective on combat, the differences in the conflicts of Iraq and Afghanistan and the mindset he used going from peak performance in a F-16 to becoming a father for the first time. The results of that mindset can be so valuable for any veteran watching as it has helped him come to terms with his combat experiences.

Mr. Chisam, Thank you so much for your service. You are protecting our families and our citizens (even the ungrateful ones) from the horrors of war. Without men and women like yourself we would not be able to live like we do. I got out of the Army because of my daughter being born. I did not want to leave her without a father if I had of been killed. Now 20 years later her mother died from brain cancer, and if had of been KIA she would now be an orphan. So I know I did the right thing even though I miss the service every day I know I did the right thing by her. Again, thank you so much for your service to this great country (even with all our problems). 3/327 101st Air Assault and Camp Casey Korea Infantry mortars.

I hadn't processed the death we caused until I held my newborn daughters born just after two different deployments. That's when the gravity set in for me too. I have not closed that loop, and the wars are long gone.

This is what a genuinely good human being looks like! And man oh man do we need so many more people like this in todays day of age. People are so mean to one another. Why? We are all the same. We are all just trying to figure life out. It’s hard enough as it is but then we go making it so much harder for people when it doesn’t have to be that way. It’s so much easier to be kind.

Matt did what was expected of him. If it wasnt for his jdams, his brothers wouldve been maimed, killed and emotionally scared even more. Look at whats going down in the trenches in ukraine today everyday. He saved them from this death roulette. You can be proud Matt. You are their hero. As you should be. Fly save dude.

I met one of our aussie apache chopper pilots and he reminds me of this guy. He told me part of the strafing and firing was to have a second behind you and a third up top depending on the targets severity. But he said the same thing. We were told just destroy it all. Leave nothing alive. Thats a hard thing to live with when its not an actual frontline war. Iraq wasnt ww2 He said the posters of apaches and all the warbirds are nothing compared to playing in them and their avionics, but the trade off is you know and SAW what you killed. Who you killed. I supoose the moment its not a videogame anymore or a movie would reslly hit you hard. But knowing you had to kill a family because of the uncle with a missile would haunt me.
