A Vulcan was never placed on Navy Phantoms, and they did fine in Nam. A gun is a useful addition in most 3rd and 4th Gen fighters, but far from essential- even in that era. The USAF pushback to both the sparrow and sidewinder emerged due to a severe lack of training and understanding by pilots on how to utilize the weapon system. The Navy which placed a much higher emphasis on teaching said skills to maintainers and Pilots faired much better with missle armament.

@@agamemnonn1 If he has missiles, and you don't, then he has such an insane advantage that running away is the only sensible option, unless you're already in gun range, an occurrence which is... unlikely. I suppose that increasingly advanced stealth technology _could_ lead to more engagements happening at relatively short range, since the planes can't detect each other from further away.

We usually have tankers on standby within range of the planes. This has been a thing for decades. A strike package should have F-16s with and without conformal tanks.

I worked structural maintenance on the UAE F-16s with the CFTs. 75% of our work were from those CFTs. Total pain in the arse!

People seem to really dislike the look of CFTs, personally I think the best looking F-16 is a two seater with CFTs, a Clean Viper is very pretty but a Sufa for example just looks so bad ass!!

It would be interesting to do dogfight between aircrafts who have almost no fuel in the internal tanks (not fully empty) and they have full drop tanks, so they have to decide when to drop the tanks, if they do it late, they can be killed, if they do it so soon, they may run out of fuel in veey short time, I dont know if its technically possible to have such a fuel load but it sounds fun challenge

6th gen planes with no pilots would be nuts lmao, radar cross section of .005cm probably, no safety features, half the weight most likely, no need to worry about pulling too many Gs. The only thing the designers would have to worry about is how far they can push the limits.

i'm excited to use functional CFT in the sim , the main benefit to me is I can get two extra hard points for weapons without worrying about fuel. that and my nation just purchased a batch of newer F-16 with CFT so F-16 with CFT look more modern to me

Those CFT's make the f-16 look like it's been on that juice. Best time of my life working on f-16 and f-15. Airforce vet 1998-2005. I got out a year or so before the cft's were being used on the f-16.

It’s worth noting that the late block Vipers sold with CTFs also have upgraded engines with more power, to offset the increased drag and weight somewhat. I personally wonder if a Viper with upgraded engines and empty CFTs could out rate an older Viper.

Going of this, I assume the aircraft is still able to effectively fight. Conformal fuel tanks are basically a non-factor for bvr, and good enough for fox-2 engagements.

CFTs on the Viper look really cumbersome, compared to Eagle CFTs; letter should have barely any effect on performance.

I think this would be a great addition to the sim! Since the F-16 can be flown by both Blue and Reds it would add some variables to the engagements! Take the Conformal Fuel Tanks and get a larger weapons loadout and fuel capacity but sacrifice weight and some loss in aerodynamics or go clean and have to choose between drop tanks or additional weapons and shorter range but have better maneuverability in a dogfight. I think for most a dogfight, as in this video, is less likely depending of course on mission.

UAE also has the Block 60s w/ conformal tanks. The big advantage of the extra fuel is more liberal use of afterburner in the target or CAP area.

I think it would be more accurate if instead of spawning in flight do a cold start from 2 different locations, or even the same, and see who last longer in a turning fight. The conformals are a hinderance but they do give you endurance at a minor disadvantage in maneuverability.

BVR is beyond visual range and is about fighting with medium to long range missiles like the AIM120 Amraam. He didnt stay at higher altitude because he needed to exchange his potential energy into kinetic energy to keep up with the turnrate of the clean Viper. As soon as he hit the ground, he had no potential energy left and you see his opponent gaining slowly but steadily. He then used the mistake of his opponent to his advantage to beat him.

6g is really not that hard for a real pilot man. not indefinitely obvs but from talking to them many of them have said they could do it for a preeetty long time. especially for a few turns, they'd be ok.

Hey growling Sidwinder you should try also both in the rate fight etc but with same fuel levels one with this mod, the other the normal F16 ... so check if the planes with the same Fuel, but with the different drag is that big of a difference or not... it should be similar if its done right but it wold be fun to know , also 2 planes side by side making the climb... and check if one just does it better than the other.. again with similar fuel levels! this way one can check if the mod is realistic ;) and if there is an altitude difference.. speed etc :) just an ideia, Keep up the good Videos i watch them all!

I'm curious to see what it's like when the fuel in the tanks is completely spent.. I assume this aircraft it's not made to fight with full tanks but rather after a long range strike deep into enemy territory..

agreed, visually not pleasing but they kind of fix the 1 problem the F-16 has which is the range/fuel load. so ya I also understand the utility, but I agree a clean F-16 looks 100 times better.

@@GrowlingSidewinder A Q for you GS. Has there been any thought about dumping fuel from the CFTs when you're getting your ass kicked in BFM? I don't know a whole lot about it, but seems reasonable, no?. F-16's with bags drop them pretty quick when angling and rating are required. Seems like you can go along way on the CFTs and be able to sacrifice fuel like the baggers in a pinch. What do you think? Are the Block 60's able to carry more Fox 3's and 2's in the new configuration? That's a big plus for later 16s.

Did they touch the dmg models for the Viper? am honestly impressed he was still flying after the 1st burst, albeit minus one elevator, and would've sworn after the 2nd his wing would've been gone, anyways, those effects... yum yum
