Growling Sidewinder Store: teespring.com/stores/growling-sidewinder-store Hey guys, so I've made my first small leap into Falcon 4.0 the flight sim we all know and love from back in the day, I will say that the work that has been done on the F-16 over the years in that sim has been amazing, huge respect to the community over there. I really enjoyed the flight model and the aircraft I was flying against seemed to have decent aircraft specific flight models too, like when I fought the mig-25 is was super slow and really fat an easy kill in a dogfight, the J-15 was obvs harder and the fulcrums performance was similar to what I expected to see so it was a nice little surprise. I wanted to say a big thank you to my Friend Rex, and Max Waldorf for making this video possible I had a lot of fun in BMS and I hope the 2 communities can get along a little more and really come together and understand that its the same community we all love flight sims we just like different flight sims, one doesn't have to be better than the other whatever you like. I really did enjoy the 90s feel I got from this tho made me feel like a little kid again, I hope you guys enjoyed the video and thank you for watching. Much Love.

but is the flight model closer to the real viper in bms or in dcs if we are not taking G lock in to concideration? its all i wanna knw haha im just really curious because i play both BMS and DCS and id like to know that for my own knowledge

@Chris Bagnall okay thanks for the correction then, Eng is not my native anyways so i tend to make silly mistakes like that. in last patch notes in dcs ive read they adjusted the G-loc for the Viper pilot yet i still feel like this jet isnt a good dogfighter yet and im wondering how accurate are those sims in this case

If you want to see where BMS really shines, you have to get into the campaigns (either Korea or other theatres). Then you will understand why BMS is still around 22 years on.

The UI is so bad tho like I tried to get into bms, I really did, downloaded a bunch of mods and shit, only to reach the ui. Had to watch a 30min video just to figure it out, just to get into the game and realize u actually have to remember all that shit because you can't just esc and look at controls

This is is for real men. ;-) But you're right. UI is lacking a lot a modem support. It is a huge effort to redo the UI for several reasons. One of the reason is the real time mode of the campaign. Maybe someday. What I like with BMS is that time is not money. :-) Kind regards. Good flights!

@@Dee-Jay if they modernized the ui and improved the graphics, actually i wouldn't even care about graphics because when I was prepping for the game I saw how many planes you could get which is awesome as I don't particularly care about like period accuracy of weapons like dcs does

Nice video.. i love falcon bms.. the feeling when you are 100 miles in to enemy territory all alone with your flight on a deep strike and suddenly see scramble mig29s getting up in the skies only to hunt your flight.. and there you are with your loaded heavy af f16 burnt already half of your fuel.. you begin to figuring out your options and try to bring your 3 buddys back home.. should you jettison and fight with half a tank or try to sneak away from the migs or just run for your life.. and just in the moment you descided to run.. spike 6.. launch warning.. the campaign missions are so intense..

BMS's better features over DCS IMO have gotta be its extensive mission planning, inbuilt and comprehensive datacard system, and its dynamic campaign. edit: Also its airports, AI will actually fuck off back to them when in Bingo and you have to go through the frequencies to get clearance to land.

I feel Falcom BMS strong points are dynamic campaign and level of detail as far as mission flight planning and target steer point placing. DCS as you mention has the graphics engine and sound.

Oh those weird cloud effects bring back some memories. Last time I touched falcon 4, bms was a "new" thing. and that all made me think of falcon 3.0 and the MASSIVE pile of floppy discs.

@@SVSky For the time, that was an amazing game! I remember the 486 dying on me... I tried as hard as I could as a child to get it to run on my next system to no avail. When Falcon 4.0 came out I was 13. I didn't go "game crazy" often but I can remember BEGGING for that one. I'm sure it required a lot of lawn work and laundry. It started a lifelong passion for aviation. I was never a talented pilot, but I spent many many hours in that cockpit. We have been PC free (other than work laptops) for 5 or 6 years now. I've been living vicariously through GS and a few other folks. We bought a business about 6 months ago, and home PC would very much streamline some of our workflow. I have that excitement all over again. It will take me a while to acquire the hardware to do it RIGHT, as life surely has other priorities right now, but it's my dream to be "flying" again before I turn 36. While there are some outliers and folks who take it way too seriously, there does seem to be an abundance of really cool people in the community. Thanks for sharing your part too.

Falcon is all about dynamic campaign. Been playing since 1998. There has never been any game in any genre like it. It's absolutely fantastic.

I started playing combat flight sims when I was a kid, playing Falcon 3.0, that I launched from DOS using floppy disks, so I will always have a soft spot for the Falcon franchise and I'm stoked to see you try BMS. However, in terms of simple dogfights, or even x vs y groups of aircraft fights, DCS is probably the more engaging game. The graphics are better and there's a lot more variety in terms of aircraft missiles etc. The place where BMS shines is in the campaign engine. It's AI going at each other using an entire theater's worth of aircraft and ground units, in an unscripted manner. It can lead to some pretty wild and engaging situations, like detouring from your strike mission to go kill some Su-25s, then running out of AMRAAMs, and having to run for your life when MiG-29s show up to intercept you, then getting saved by some F-15s that responded to the MiG-29s. I hope you try it out. Finally, that last kill was SO uncomfortable to watch. I thought you were going to deep stall for sure.

When BMS gets VR I'm back in. BMS is still a favorite but to me it's about the I-word. Both sims are very good and I'm glad we have _some_ choice; there isn't much beyond these two.

you should defiantly learn and play with some of the other systems and ordinates that are available in bms for the F16 compared to DCS things like the 8 gbu-39 small diameter bombs, the HARM targeting pod is such a nice system to have to target radar emitters, turning on and off IFF codes and being able to change them, proper data link between you and your package flights, the list goes on and on.

Campaign engine and immersion are the steong points of BMS... You really have the feeling to be part of a war. Never had these kind of feel in DCS even with the more complex and DLC campaigns

Hi, I'm glad you liked FMs. Yep it's quite obvious DCS has much better GFX. As for Falcon4 graphics date it's a bit more complex. Last major update was brought by BMS 4.32 in september '11, with some minor updates in (textures, trees autogen, new models, etc ...) in each next release. But terrain engine is still quite close to original 1998 Falcon 4 and that's the worst looking part of BMS. Next gfx major update is in the works, but it's gonna take some time to be ready for release. In terms of AI, 1vs1 gunzo only fight is not main focus of dev team, lots of effort went into BVR/multi-ship BVR tactics, ground attack profiles, SAM/AD logic and ATC. In general BMS is best enjoyed in more complex scenarios like campaigns, i strongly recommend to try it at least once :). Best of luck and stay safe

Listening to numerous Viper pilots regarding Viper acceleration/energy, consensus is at 450 kts and above, no amount of G will bleed its energy. Ditto for the Eurofighter. It will keep accelerating. Didn't say at what altitude. Another account is the Viper when clean will accelerated at low level at 40 mph per second. Eagle will accelerate at 50 kts in 3 seconds but again, no mention of starting speed or altitude but this goes to show perhaps the DCS Viper model for acceleration and energy is underperforming.

I really hope they implement this into it. The f16 is fierce in a dogfight but tge performance is not accurate in dcs. But its still early access. Lets see what happens. ED has done a great job so far in many aspects

Anecdotal Viper and anecdotal Eagle pilot reports are non-specific and vague for a reason, but not good enough for you. Never stated there is or will be more to the equation. Oh wait, Viper pilot stated clean and down low. Oh wait, Eagle pilot stated "unloaded" in a mock dogfight. Point is... point is you've identified yourself as, well someone with something to say about something that was never said. Well done. Meanwhile we will take it on your authority to never believe anything a Viper or Eagle pilot says during an online interview about Viper and Eagle performance because it is all anecdotal and not real hard evidence or facts. Must be terrible for you to only believe trusted scientific measuring devices complete with engineering certification of results, in these instances of claimed performance. Yeah, that's a tough one.

So much attention to detail in BMS in terms of avionics, you really have to dig in to see the differences. Just take a look at the massive documentation, it is not just filler, it all pertains to something that effects game play. The TE Editor is excellent. You can set up a full mission with all packages, SEAD, strike, escort etc. and then run the mission as any one of the elements and enter the flight at any point even watching the map while time skipping to see when the enemy engages and then jump in cockpit. It is tough to compare BMS to DCS but you cannot say that DCS is superior. Your thoughts were spot on, play what you like and what you prefer.

@@bpaldy Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was running on the IW engine which traced its origins back to the Quake engine. Nowadays we've shifted the paradigm so much it's nonsense to mod old engines, but up to the late 2000s it wasn't uncommon for many game engines to be modified versions of older engines. I didn't say the game wasn't good, I'm just saying that what's on this screen is not what people saw on release.

Ben DCS has been build from lock on , itself build on flanker 1.5 & 2.0. Both DCs and bms are 20 years old game. DCs ha put GFX development on front line while BMS did other things :)

I hope so too. I want to learn it and use it on dogfighting servers, but she can't quite turn with fighters like the F-18, the JF-17 (unironically it can rate just as good as the hornet), the dogshit F-15, or the F-14. Right now, it's not all that much a joy to dogfight in.

Honestly I'm a huge fan of these 1990s sim graphics. They obviously aren't fully realistic, but the level of detail out of these ~30 year old games always impresses me

Falcon 4.0 has the best campaign in a flight sim bar none. I love the 80s NK or the 00s Israel scenario. Now with carrier based fighters (F-16 Avionics though) it is even more fun!

I had my friend whose been pilot F-16 for over 20 years tried both DCS and BMS 4.34, he preferred BMS because more realistic both flight model and how the weapons work.

BMS Dynamic Campaign keeps me coming back. Being part of an air war, seeing all your efforts in DCA or DEAD missions paying off. BMS also support real-world weather and dynamic weather within the campaign, all fully do-able co-op online too.

Glad to see some other stuff than dcs for once. The rotating clouds are fixed in one of the latest patches. Also I think spotting deserves some high praise. Can't see anything in dcs. The ai actually jinks which is a fun addition. It also has some really nice bvr tactics. I'd be happy to see more content from BMS. Please try to beat the F22, quite a challenge!

In Falcon 4.0 credits (including the ones in Falcon BMS) you will see a name that is known to you: "Matt (Wags) Wagner"... He was part of the beta testing team. This is why I never understood why they "hate" Falcon BMS so much (apparently)

Graphics are one thing.... but no matter how good the graphic is in DCS: The world is dead. Fire up BMS with a friend... while he flies one task (3D world) you still choose or create your own mission in the 2D world. Everything lives and moves, all these dots appearing on the small map in the upper right corner + comms.... DCS will never come that close. SAM, C3 AI's etc. ground battles evolving, SAM ambushes after a few sites pinged your formation to estimate your heading... just for a site to get active beneath you. It's amazing. I'm shocked to say this but even Tornado (by Digital Integration) made more fun than DCS.

I played the heck out of BMS years ago. I've tried to get into DCS (especially with VR) but haven't made it very far. Maybe I should try again with the F-16 module since I know the systems better from Falcon. I have been having fun lately just watching DCS videos from Growling Sidewinder and others. What kept me from loving DCS were the campaigns where you have to beat a mission to make progress. What I loved about Falcon is that if I got jumped by Migs and dumped my bombs, I didn't fail the mission and have to repeat it. The war continued. Maybe I should just look at DCS as a simulator for testing different scenarious and give up wanting an immersive campaign.

I bought the Fa14 on dcs when I df after the merge the enemy jet disappeared. It's hard to see the other jet. Dcs need smart scale like bms

Someone needs to do a modern day port of Strike Commander! That was by far my favorite flight sim in the mid 90s on the premise alone (mercenary squadron of buddies, flying missions for hire, having to actually purchase ordinance so if you wanted to be profitable you got really gun efficient and MK82 efficient instead of burning up a rack of AMRAAMs and laser guided A-G stuff lol) Had YF23 and F22 in it before I even knew they existed

I played both, online and offline. There's always Work In Progress for both, but bms felt already completed as a game.

I agree with you just fly them both if you are a flight simmer. The graphics issue is what it is but it still looks decent.

Glad to see you trying Falcon BMS. One thing you didn't mention is the ingenious scaling system this old simulation uses. You can spot and track your target much more easier compared to DCS. I watch your videos and I admit that it's the first time I could see what you were chasing in my TV screen, in DCS you should put a big red arrow above tour target. PS Try the campaign, this is where BMS really shines!

@@KJ-kn8pg BMS itself is a free mod, links to download available on BMS forum, 'tho' You need Falcon 4.0 from Steam or GoG for legal reasons.

You should try the mirage. It s flight model is better than the one in DCS. It also include multiple variants like the 2000C -5 -9 D or N. So that mean MICA missiles. There s a good french squadron chanel that fly it Called the e.c. 5/25 mousquetaires. You should check out for footage of the Mirage.

Well, is it me or does the Falcon BMS F-16 perform better than the DCS F-16? Or should I ask, does it seam like Eagle Dynamics taking away performance of certain airframes that should be a little more dominant to even the playing field? If that's the case, then is DCS more of an arcade game rather than a simulation? The reason for my point, I think they omitted some of the Viper's performance. Same for the Mig-29? The Mig-29 is suppose to be one of the best turn rate fighters out there. Just talking about gen 4 airframes.

That game got me into combat flight sims. I still remember it to this day. I found Falcon 4.0 a few years later at an EB Games on the clearance bin.

@@saiajin82 fair enough. Back in the late 90s/early 2000s, there were 3 microsoft combat flight sims. Personally, however, I liked number 1 the most because the missions were realistic, like diving on a flight of hurricanes over London in an ME109

in DCS ? Its F/A-18 Hornet, JF-17, Mirage 2000, F-14B, F-16, F-15. Mig-29 and then the Su-27/J-11 Notice how mostly nato planes are ahead of Russian aircraft, this is because most of those are rate fighters. The Russian Aircraft are more 1 circle fighters in DCS, that being said I think the new versions of the su-27 are better rate fighters but we don't have that in DCS. so I guess it really depends on how you like to fight, I personally prefer rate fighting so I have a NATO bias. but its undisputable that the JF-17 and the Hornet are the most versatile aircraft for dogfighting in the SIM. The rest of that list is debatable.

My understanding is that while DCS comes ahead in terms of technology and graphics, BMS' strong point is it's robust dynamic campaign, which DCS has yet to provide even a half baked answer to, not that I don't think DCS will get there, it's just not there yet

Hi, GS! Although BMS graphics is lower than DCS, but I was told many times it’s the most real F-16 sim now. After all it developed for decades. You should try do BVR demo one day, BMS AI BVR tactics is superior and the missile range is much longer than DCS. It’s totally different experience!!

Growling Sidewinder, another area that BMS trumps DCS is by their maps. BMS' Maps are all 1000 km x 1000 km square and some are even bigger. DCS' maps are barely a quarter of the size. This allow realistic missions that can be hundreds of miles from home base that are populated by thousands of ground units and aircraft. Secondly, not only are BMS' Maps so much bigger than DCS, there are far more and all of them are free. Here is just a partial list of all the maps that work with the dynamic campaign: Korea (Default) Kuriles Island Conflict Taiwan Vietnam Nevada Panama Peru Norway Baltic Region The Balkans Aegean Georgia Israel Somalia Kuwait/Iran/Iraq, 2x versions You can literally fly in any continent during a BMS Dynamic Campaign. What does have for maps: Georgia and Marianas for free. Payware: Channel, Normandy, Persian Gulf (really the Strait of Hormuz) and Syria.

Love it... Immersion is so important... The gfx make DCS so immersive. All BMS has is; Decent AI Complex and working ATC Changable Weather Dynamic campaign Mission planning with multiple packages The GFX may not be awesome but it feels alive, not an empty pay-wall sandbox.

No. Before U4 , clouds were turning with head movement which was a nightmare. InU4 clouds are turning with viewer position , and when you are in the clouds this is masked by transparency but in this case here if you fly right above or right below a cloud you will see them turn. Unless we use 3D cloud someday , they have to turn at some point ...
