Since going through a discerned Cluster B relationship this subject knowledge has become a fascinating journey. Not necessarily pointing fingers but of introspection. We only arrive at a destination if we have taken the fast track there. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you so much, Dr. Carveth! The topic of pathological narcissism is extra topical these days: from understanding of oneself, to understanding of close relations, to understanding of societal and political milieu. However unpopular this may be nowadays, there is no real winning in the narcissistic delusional aspiration to "never lose any fights"...

Why can’t some students just let the professor finish his sentence first and then show off his “insightful knowledge”? We miss out a lot of what he was going to say. You are here to gain knowledge from him, not taking up everybody’s time it is not your show. Nothing constructive from that person anyways.

You can tell that you used to teach psychology I wish there were more professors like you I love in this video how you are having a dialogue with someone that opposes some of your views and so instead of you dismantling his views with a straw man argument you have a meaningful dialogue with him to better explain your views and you leave it up to him to make the choice whether your views are right. There are no professors like that in my university where I go. You should go back to teaching just because there's not many teachers like you and you are a great example to other soon to be professors

Narcissism is not bad, it's suffering, plain and unmitigated, constant suffering. It's being sick, ie. not being able to function and act as you would like to. It's very strange to me to hear a psychoanalyst making this categorial confusion between moral and developmental or moral and pathological. Is being psychotic bad? It may be bad for others, but it's not a decision for the self. Neither is narcissism or being unable to love. How can you attribute moral responsibility to something that is not freely chosen?
@puzakmuzak
@puzakmuzak 6 жыл бұрын
Dr. Carveth is not making a categorical confusion between moral/developmental. I think what he's saying is that narcissism is a defense against a more serious pathology of borderline functioning. If narcissism is indeed this sort of defence, then it must be defending against something "worse". In a sense, it's not that relevant to focus on whether or not moral responsibility is freely chosen or not. The take home message is what would happen is the narcissistic defence was able to removed? What's underneath narcissism is suffering...narcissism in itself is not suffering.

Of course it's bad if you're sick. Doesn't matter if you chose it or not. You have to do something about it. If I had a physical illness and I continually refused to see a doctor then you'd very quickly start to blame me for prolonging my own suffering. As someone once said to me "It's not your fault, but it is your responsibility".

Is not the phallus in Lacan symbolic, as the signifier of significance, faith in the sybolic order or fear of absence? If so, how could he be patriarchal, especially when acceptance of castration is the medium for reclaiming subjectivity and overcoming narcissism, the specular ego?

Have you ever successfully treated a depressed patient whose pain makes them excessively self-referential? Your following comments really make me wonder:: "why are depressed people such a bore, why do we not want to be around them, because it's all about them....depressed people are completely wrapped up in themselves, they have very little capacity to empathise with other people, we want to get away from them..." No wonder Klein's son killed himself and her daughter disowned her, with these sorts of ideas floating about.... DISCUSS.... :-)
@doncarveth
@doncarveth 6 жыл бұрын
Professional psychoanalysts don't blurt their countertransference reactions in cruel and hurtful ways but use them to better understand their patients who are people who in addition to being in pain themselves often inflict pain on those around them.
@MrGooda2
@MrGooda2 6 жыл бұрын
thanks, I appreciate the response....am playing devils advocate here of course. I find the ideas fascinating but sometimes wonder if psychoanalysis is at risk of trying to be too clever. I would much sooner a therapist who is wise other one who is clever. Klein's attempts at analysing her own kids was obviously disastrous. Does this shocking lack of insight on her part not reduce how seriously we should take her theories?
