Narcissism is an important concept in psychoanalysis and a frequent term in contemporary society. In this video, we present some of its meanings, both theoretical and clinical. In this video psychoanalyst Aleksandar Dimitrijevic introduces the concept.
Psychoanalysis should be free! From this motto, we're looking at making the insights of more than a century of psychoanalytic understanding available to anyone and everywhere.

Astonishing! Bringing the reality of psychoanalysis into the world. With all the nonsense everywhere. When he spoke about inability to distinguish self from other, inability to acknowledge external reality, he might have brought the concept of SYMBIOSIS into the conversation. Seems very relevant. How does narcissistic inability to separate relate to the symbiotic fantasy of oneness with others.

Thank you for your support! I believe that symbiosis is synonymous with narcissistic enmeshment.

@@aleksandardimitrijevic4666 I guess what you call it is not so important. However, symbiosis is a somewhat stronger term than narcissistic enmeshment. My research is on Nazism and Hitler. "Hitler is Germany, just as Germany is Hitler." NO CONCEPT OF SEPARATENESS.

@@aleksandardimitrijevic4666 Here's information on my book, SYMBIOSIS & SEPARATION: Towards a Psychology of Culture. www.libraryofsocialscience.com/books/symbiosis-and-separation/ I demonstrate that our entire relationship with society has the quality of NARCISSISTIC ENMESHMENT. This is why culture has such power to control and oppress us. It's out wish to be BOUND TO THE BODY POLITIC.

i’d love to hear more about the prediction of narcissism’s trajectory (at the end of the video) and how it relates to the so-called dissociation discourse that had gained steam prior to covid-19. It seems your prediction has even more relevance to both areas today

Hey Suzie! By "trajectory" you mean the hypothesised change between Freud's time and ours?

Look for professor Sam Vaknin (feel free to check his credentials and his life work on narcissism and cluster B personality disorders before you do) and dive in. His insights are unprecedented in my humble opinion.

This was a great video, so thank you. There's no doubt that Kernberg is a genius and my gut tells me that he's right about the relationship between borderline and narcissism, but I think Kohut is on point about so many things that he just might have the lead for me, in particular his ideas about horizontal *AND* vertical splitting, and his point about destrudo: I don't think you can understand narcissism without incorporating destrudo, and I agree the libido shouldn't be confined to sexuality, but Freud was mostly correct, you could say that all libido is a diffusion of sexual energy; all destrudo a diffusion of the death instinct or the survival aspects of destruction.

First of all, lets make clear that what Freud referred to as a sexual drive was not erotic in nature but pertaining to life force, a force related to goals involving achievement, personal relations, material desires and self image. These factors, especially self image, are formed in early childhood. As stated by Jershield, the child we once were still resides within us today. It is when our child prevents self actualization and the individual, although an adult, has the personality of a spoiled, self centered brat with no remorse that psychosis exists. As indicated in the studies of identical twins that these traits are, to a great extent, hereditary.

So, vis Kohut, narcissism as a kind of drive is… sociality? Social connection? Belonging? I’d buy that. A social wound leads to eg needing supply like a belonging-diabetic.

The last sentence is the most interesting and provocative, where you say that narcissism and sexual satisfaction are not mutually exclusive. Can you tell me if there are critical essays on this connection?

Sir with due respect i do disagree with you about what you say about narcissism in positive sense. Narcissistic personality is literally a challenge to family member . It is no way a healthy personality.
