In Spain we are very proud of our Hornet and the pilots who fly them. When they reached the Air Force, the F-18 was one of the best fighter-bombers in Europe, and since then have been the backbone of our military aviation. A few years ago were modernized, and have been integrated Taurus and Iris-T missiles, besides the Litening II and RecceLite. We currently have 84 aircraft (62 A and 12 B) over 6 squadrons, one operational conversion and 5 fighter. I love our Hornets!

I think they're more disappointed that it isn't a same-generation engagement since it doesn't confirm their preconceived bias between the F-teens and the MiGs of the last few decades. Nobody can use this to say that Americans are better than Russians and they find it disappointing. Others are defensive about the MiGs and so they quickly point out it wasn't an "even" match. I don't really know enough about aircraft history to know the jet fighter generations backwards and forwards.

He meant it for a fighter, more precisely a multirole. Fighter planes used to detach their payloads when they engaged in a dogfight, even in Vietnam. They were equipped with 2,000-pound bombs and probably 2 bags full of fuel, so they'd have been g-limited to like 4.5Gs or less. They're not "dogfighting" shit like that. These were head-on shots, no turning invovled. Still pretty awesome. They are 2 out of 3 of all the air-to-air kills the Hornet/Super Hornet has, but in the hornets defense, they weren't flying CAP very often, most of the air-to-air kills the US has since Vietnam, have been in the F-15C, because that's all that airplane does, it was the primary air superiority fighter the US had. When awacs picked up a bandit they didn't vector hornets in, because they probably were carrying bombs and multiple fuel tanks. If nothing else this proved the whole Multirole self escorting thing works.

I agree. The Forrestal class had only 2 elevators on the starboard side, and 2 on the port side, 1 fore and 1 aft of the angle deck. The Kittyhawk class had 3 on the starboard side, and 1 on the port aft of the angle deck. The island is a little closer to the stern consequently. This looks more like the Kittyhawk. I thought I saw 63 on the island, but it flashed by so fast, it was hard to tell for sure. From what I've seen, this sort of thing is very common in military clips.

I am eternally stunned at how these amazing pilots can land on a carrier with just a freakin' steel cable to slow them down and keep them from falling off the end of the runway into the sea! I've seen that that does happen sometimes, falling in the water, but when the rope trick succeeds, it is exhilarating to watch them come in hot and stop by just a freaking cable! Lord, I love watching these ace pilots doing their job with such finesse and courage for our country! THANK YOU, PILOTS, FOR YOUR SERVICE TO AMERICA!!

@kirayoshikage4057
@kirayoshikage4057 2 жыл бұрын
If you don't catch the cable you speed up and try landing again lol, you have to be an idiot to fall into water. Once the pilot feels the wheels hit the ground, he is supposed to go full throttle, either he will be stopped by the tross or he will have enough thrust to immediately take off and try landing again. Which is rare because for that to happen you have to be a terrible flier and miss your landing spot, or just unlucky enough for several hook skips (hook somehow bouncing off the wire) to occur, there's more than one "wire" to catch you. There's no magic in it, just obvious safety rules that everyone follows. If you want to be impressed by something like that, think of prop planes, with those you couldn't just go full throttle because their rudders and ailerons couldn't handle it in those specific conditions, you also have to adjust for torque of your motor, but all of this is a downside of a turboprop and luckily long gone.

Five years ago I had an Uber driver here in Connecticut who was a former Iraqi fighter pilot back in the 1980s. Very nice guy. Saw much action in Iran / Iraq war and had been shot down twice. Received all of his training in the Soviet Union. Couldn’t really understand why US had invaded in 2003. He said the US navy had provided the Iraqi Air Force with much radar support in areas out of range of Iraqi radar and saved his ass on a number of occasions. Fortunately for him he didn’t fly in 1991 and after.

Outside of the Israeli Air Force very very few engagements since the Korean War have ended in a gun fight (and even then, it has been a small percentage). @leee2593 9 жыл бұрын
Sniper5354 The radar does not pick up missile launches. The RWR does. The Mig-21's RWR is weak, old and with a high risk of failure. Also, the hornet launched an Aim-9 Heatseeking missile first which hit before the radar guided Aim-7 sparrow, and as the AIm-9 is not guided via radar, it didn't give away the launch and combined with the very, very poor and restricted rear visibility of the Mig, it was a sure easy kill.

@leee2593
@leee2593 9 жыл бұрын
Jason Jia Yes, Yes it does. There are sensors scattered across the aircraft corpus which detect the energy generated by a missile launch. That basically means that any good-sized missile launch, like an Igla or a TOW missile will be detected by the RWR.
@JaZoN_XD
@JaZoN_XD 9 жыл бұрын
I don't think it does. Depending on aircraft and it's configuration, maybe, for example, A10Cs have those sensors but for the F15 or not to even mention the even older Mig 21, there's no indication of an ir launch, only radar launches will give you a warning.
@leee2593

The mig-21 is actually a very good airframe/craft, but the countries that use it are very ignorant on its potential when it's upgraded. The MiG-21 can be maneuverable at higher rates of speed, especially for its age. However, in a lower speed fight, the small wings and control surfaces become a major disadvantage. I'm sure it could definitely outrun and outclimb a Hornet, but in a turning fight it would have little chance. That's why the MiG-21s in Vietnam would do fast hit and runs and ambushes from high altitude on strike aircraft, and generally try to avoid tangling with the F-4s in a straight-up dogfight.

simba1 proof for all that? Or did you manipulative media tell you that, any recordings of the paf pilot getting beat? His dead Body? His plane with the battalion emblem? No,because it's your media and gov telling you that check the logs no paf f-16 flew in that defense

The AWACS should get some credit to. I do think the MIG 21 is a nice looking aircraft.

No. The Tomcat has done this before as well. Because none of the Tomcat's five air-to-air kills involved carrying 8,000 pounds of bombs. You wouldn't know of any other airplane scoring a Mig kill without jettisoning its bombs first. If so, please tell me.

David N No because the hornet can do everything, its a multi-role fighter, it can do a variety of missions and get the job done, also it's easy to maintain unlike the f14 was, the f18 is perfect for the Navy and what they do and this is just the C/D variant the E/F Super Hornet is even better its the best Naval fighter in the world

Exactly my point. Tomcats only carried LGBs, JDAMs, dumb bombs and Maverick missiles. Hornets can carry all of those, and more. It was outfitted from the outset with its own laser targeting pod whereas the Tomcat had to use one the Air Force was already using.
