What a great start into the new year! I wish you a happy new year 2022! :-). Thank you very much for starting your analysis series about the chopin etudes! I am looking forward to all episodes :-). It would be really great if you could do a video about practicing in general. It could be a part of an piece of music where you show how to approach it and how to take care of more difficult measures and passages. Thank you in advance!

Thank you so much, maestro! Your videos have always given me happiness, and have given me insight into the trickiness and nuances of so many pieces. I might not be a concert pianist, but I am a grateful amateur piano fan who is deeply grateful for all you have done. Chopin is indeed timeless, and with your help his music will live on forever. Thank you so much! Sean

Happy New Year, Greg. I thoroughly enjoy how introspective , yet down to earth your thoughts are on Chopin's pieces; they can never be described well under 20 minutes. This particular piece includes stunning scales. I will never stop feeling amazed with how many mystical emotions Chopin effectively expressed through his compositions.

Hello, I'm a Chopin music lover from Korea. I've really enjoyed your video! From all 4 Ballades to the etudes, your analysis and Polish references are something I can't find anywhere else. I genuinely love Chopin's works. It's like a non-illegal drug for me. They bring so much joy and sorrow that resonate in my mind. I remember listening to Chopin's Ballade No. 4, and during the coda, tears just flowed from my eyes, and I got goosebumps that I had never experienced before. Your analysis has helped me appreciate Chopin's work even more. Now, I'm practicing Etude Op. 10 No. 1, and your references to what Chopin said to his students have been a great help! I plan to practice it slowly. Thank you so much!

Very interesting to hear the connection to JSB's prelude. Often when practicing Chopin 10-1, I often default to play WTC 1-1 before or after and even in between. Both affect each other, even this simple prelude helps with technique for the etude.

Thanks Grzegorz for the video! I do not think you need to worry for being too explicit or for explaining Chopin in straight words. I guess there is no harm in saying Chopin would like his music to be brought to as many people as possible. Not all of them being educated musicians for that matter. So a great job Grzegorz, many thanks ! Keep on, your effort is definitely worth each and a every doubt a professional musician might have. Thanks again.

Great work. You are able to present the essence of things without using the hermetic jargon of musicologists. I have nothing against musicologists, but if the message is to be valuable and at the same time understandable for a wide audience it has to avoid jargon. You manage to do that. All the best in the new year.

Greg has anyone done an analysis regarding a relationship between the Chopin Etudes and the etudes that developed into Liszt’s Transcendental Etudes? Of course Liszt never finished the project completing only 12, but as he composed them, I would think that he would have given some thought to whether he was building on the skills Chopin was trying to encourage or to supplement them.

Greg, was it understood in the 1820's how important the Well-Tempered Clavier is from a compositional theory perspective? I think it can be argued that the developments in piano music from Mozart and Beethoven in some ways distracted from the enormous benefits of appreciating what Bach had laid down. Had the even-tempered tuning standard been adopted in Poland by the time that Chopin was studying at conservatory?

Moscheles studies were quite expressive and musical not mere finger exercises. Even some of Cramer's studies have amazing harmonies. But Cramer's studies lack a overall programmatic structure.

I prepared my practice of this studies with my raincoat cap elastic it stretched my fingers lightly in all directions. :D no, i really did ! There are some missing notes in this demonstration, with sometimes only the pivot notes fillling the space but only if you practice this study will you notice. And it's ok because he is playing at tempo which is extremely difficult without conditioning the hand beforehand. I do not blame him, just keeping it real.

Thanks Greg, I am completely hooked on your videos! As an amateur pianist I am interested in the story behind each piece, the history, the poetry, the practice techniques, and the music theory. This is the only way to do it justice, as we all need to interpret his intentions. These etudes in particular have a gauntlet one must overcome and master in order to unlock the beauty and poetry. And that is the reward after a long study. Thanks again for opening my eyes, ears and my heart to Chopin. P.S Here's an early Pachmann recording of this etude which captures the choral nature and Bach influence as you mentioned kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i92okquSv7XRaGQ.html
