Out of all Chopin's Etudes, I like this one the most because of its enormous emotional depth. Until now it was purely intuitive but learning about Norma and Chopin's identification with the libretto, I understand why. Will try to play faster, although slower tempo brings to me deeper and more suspended emotion. Big thank you Greg for your thorough and sensitive analysis. Bardzo dziekuje Panie Grzegorzu.

Greg, I can't thank you enough for this video and all your videos in general. The knowledge that you're giving out for free, the way you present it, your performance, and your vulnerability... all of it leaves me in awe and I'm very very grateful to have stumbled upon this channel. You're a great inspiration. Thank you!

I knew about the betrayal he felt when Maria Wodzińska rejected him because they were engaged at one point. But I did not know he also felt betrayed when Konstancja got married in 1832. Poor Chopin was not happy in his love life! There were so many women who wanted to be with him, but the ones he loved he could not be with.

I still remember when I noticed similarities in Chopin's music and belcanto operas for the first time. It was the very first phrase of Nocturne Op.32 No.1 that somehow reminded me of "Potria novel vigore" part/phrase of Amina's aria "Ah, non credea mirarti" (La Sonnambula, Bellini) that I was learning at that time. I don't know, whether this very similarity has some real ground, but it was a reason I got deeper into Chopin's fascination with belcanto music, because the only example I knew before was his reference to La Gazza Ladra. Thank you ever so much for all your videos!!! ❤👏🏻💐

For one moment the ending gave me the impression that it would be in major... but one bar later that impression shattered, and I knew this had to be Chopin :( There's something so tragic in this piece that is almost unparalleled in all of music. Thank you for your analysis!

Thank you for telling us the story behind the music. Love this etude which is extremely beautiful!! Full of deep sadness! How Chopin used the E flat major scale to construct the long scary virtuoso wave for left-hand was a magic!

Thank you for uncovering these unexpected treasures in this Etude, Greg ! You delivered a deeply touching performance. I never liked it, as slow as other pianists play it, but you revealed its true beauty. And the link with Norma…. Now I’ll always hear Callas in the background !

@@gregniemczuk Just curious but have you played any of Chopin's music on pianos from Chopin's time period before the year 1850? Are they easier to play or are they harder to play? Does the music sound much more different than a modern piano assuming the piano has been correctly restored with the right type of felt or similar type of felt on the hammers?
@gregniemczuk
@gregniemczuk Жыл бұрын
@@chris93703 I did. I don't like it. It doesn't sound well. Even the best restored piano sounds like an old and used piano out of tune. This is certainly not how Chopin heard his music back in the first half of the XVIII century when those pianos were new....
@chris93703
@chris93703 Жыл бұрын
@@gregniemczuk Some of the pianos I have listened to on KZfaq don't sound that well but there have been others that sounded OK. Do you think Chopin's pieces would sound better on a modern piano if the piano is tuned to unequal temperament? I have listened to modern pianos tuned to unequal temperament but I have a hard time telling the difference but maybe it is just the speakers I am using. I always suspect when I hear music from a composer like Chopin played on a modern piano that I may be missing something that can only be heard if the piece is played on an instrument from that time period. Weren't the pianos from that time period tuned in unequal temperament?
@gregniemczuk
@gregniemczuk Жыл бұрын
@@chris93703 that's a difficult topic. To be honest I don't have a perfect pitch, so for me the difference is not that big. You should ask somebody with a perfect pitch

Thank you very much! Regarding that quote from Norma, I suspect that Chopin was also mourning Bellini's recent death (Sep 1835), just like the heart-breaking variation he contributed to Liszt's Hexameron, based on Bellini's aria Suoni la tromba from I Puritani. They were very good friends, soul brothers really.

I am very interested in your comments about this etude. It's the only one I didn't really look at. Not because I don't like it but because I feel scared about the tiny notes. Yes, one can approximately subdivide them so that they fall together with the right hand, and this way it *can* be practiced successfully. This intermediated step would just destroy the mood for the player for a while. Not a problem for the listener though, who just wants to enjoy the drama of these schemeless ghosts in the left hand or whatever you imagine that it could be. Oh, and there is another fff right smack in the middle of the score. Who said btw Chopin never wrote fff?

@Gregniemczuk, watching and learning again.. I note that Horowitz emphasizes the chord at 4mins in (1:07:37 here) much louder than most and I must say it seems to fit the emotion of the piece. Have you heard his interpretation? and I am curious on your thoughts? He just seems to break the listener with a loud shriek of pain that I do not hear from other performances...

....and Bach's fuge C# minor opening with the cross of suffering Christ is even more compelling. Chopin's identification in suffering brings the following quote from a novel "Najezdzy" by Jan Dobraczynski: "Placz ale nie odchodz. Powolalem kazda z was i kazdego z was do cierpienia. Na krzyzu moim jest duzo miejsca ... (...)... Ale musicie takze wiedziec, ze w was jest ziarno moje i chce, byscie temu ziarnu pozostali wierni." or "Cry but do not go away. I have called you to suffering. There is enough space on my Cross... (...)... You must know that there is my seed within you, and I want you to remain faithful to it." Jeszcze raz dziekuje.

The Norma story makes total sense……Norma’s mind is conflicted….. like the two melodies in this etude. Also the tumultuous middle section is insane … which also makes sense….. I don’t hear the second section of part B in quite the same way…for me this section (after the bravura section ) expresses exhaustion - Tuberculosis, in fact.! Chopin almost crossing over into the death realm… and then the breath returning ..almost unexpectedly…from nowhere…For me this is where death fits into this piece. ..rather than the end…
