American Sniper is a 2014 American biographical war drama film directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Jason Hall. It is loosely based on the memoir American Sniper (2012) by Chris Kyle, with Scott McEwen and Jim DeFelice. The film follows the life of Kyle, who became the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, 160 of which were officially confirmed by the Department of Defense. Although Kyle was celebrated for his military successes, his tours of duty took a heavy toll on his personal and family life. The film was produced by Eastwood, Robert Lorenz, Andrew Lazar, Bradley Cooper, and Peter Morgan. It stars Cooper as Kyle and Sienna Miller as his wife Taya, with Luke Grimes, Jake McDorman, Cory Hardrict, Kevin Lacz, Navid Negahban, and Keir O'Donnell in supporting roles.

That stifled cough after the kid dropped the RPG is such a tangled mess of emotions. You can hear the horror, apprehension, relief, all in a couple breaths. Amazing acting.

The amount of people bashing the movie for this scene alone when he’s basically crying and hoping he doesn’t have to do it to the kid after no hesitation on man with it… it apparently effected a lot of people in theaters I’m told because some of them were vets from this time Similar to how my friend’s grandfather and his brother who were both Vietnam vets at that time went to see We Were Soldiers in theaters and they almost lost it when the broken arrow was called in

The reality is not seen. Kyle hated every Iraqi, man, woman, boy or girl. Called them savages. While the movie shows us the gray areas and the moral anxiety of war, Kyle saw everything and everyone as either good Americans or evil brown people. A hateful racist, through and through.

In ww2 a Turkish(injured) and an Australian both enemies, the Australian help the man and become friends... in the same war a German pilot didn't shot down the last American bommer. Later on, when both pilot get old and had chance, they join together and become friends also... both true stories you can lookup... Edit: it's in ww1, and it's the Australian man who was injured

But what I do remember is that the vet and his platoon were out on patrol when they came upon a house with a kid playing in the front yard. The kid sees them coming and runs into the house. All the soldiers knew what was coming and were praying that they were wrong, praying that the kid would just stay in the house. Kid comes out of the house with an AK-47 and starts pointing it at them. They didn't have a choice.

When America occupied Iraq, they did worse than this. I used to live in Baghdad, specifically an area called the city. I saw with my own eyes a tank driving in the middle of the street in the opposite direction, crushing civilian cars and those in them. There was a car from which children aged 9 and 12 years got out and they were afraid and trying to escape, but they did not. They were killed with machine guns mounted on top of the tank. Another day, I saw a child carrying food in his hand while walking on a bicycle in the middle of the street. He was shot and hit directly in the head and died. This is America that speaks about human rights. It occupies people and kills their elders and children and speaks of freedom and human rights.

My buddy who served in Iraq and Afghanistan told a story about when he killed two young teenage boys with a Javelin missile. They were digging around in tracks, possibly planting an IED and he was ordered to fire on them. The story would always come up late at night when he was past his first fifth of vodka or rum. He had also lost all hearing in one ear and 70% in the other when the vehicle he was in was blown up by an IED. Great dude and he is doing better now, although I’m sure the things he saw over there haunt him.

My coworker served in Afghanistan and Iraq. His job was to make sure the convoys made it safely to their destination. He said the enemy knows Americans value women and children. So, they would sometimes push kids into the road at the last second to try to get the convoy to a stop. If they stop they get ambushed, shot at, or blown up. So he did what had to be done. He has severe ptsd involving night terrors, etc. War is hell

This was the American sniper that America brought as a counterpart to the Iraqi sniper, the Baghdad sniper Juba, and of course there is a huge difference between the two, it is like the difference between heaven and earth. One of them killed nearly 700 American soldiers with a single Dragunov rifle, and this is the highest number that any sniper has reached throughout history, while the other, with the most modern equipment that can be obtained in anything related to sniping, was only able to kill women and children in the streets, and then Hollywood came after that to justify that with such Indian scenes and show him as a national hero, while in reality he is a war criminal.

I'll always remember that news story from early in the war in Iraq. Small child had an explosive vest on, got scared and didn't go through with it. Standing in the middle of an emptied street crying his eyes out. Soldiers approached him and disarmed the vest so it could be taken off. I could never imagine the terror of being that child. Much less being the bastard adult tasking a child that's less than 10 years old, with wearing an explosive vest loaded down with bricks of C4, and blowing himself up in the middle of a crowded street.

My mom dated an Afghan vet for a while. I wouldn't try to ask him much about it because he got severe PTSD from it. I asked him one day what he did... He paused and then said blatantly " I didn't want to do it, but I killed kids..." It left my and mom and I silent for a long time..

One of my dads old marine (Korean War) buddys came to visit him in the 80's. I heard him tell my dad, ''Do you think god will forgive us for all the ppl we killed''. That happened to Carlos Hathcock. A 12 year old boy was a gun mule. Carlos shot the wheel and disabled the bike. The kid got off and didn't run, picked up a gun and fired towards him. He had to shoot back. :(

Friend of mine was put in a similar situation. Older gentleman came out of a house carrying one, with a teenage boy carrying an ak47, and 5-6 kid standing in front of them. Convoy was broke down, so he had to make a decision, his squad or the kid. Last time I was able to get him to open up about it, he cried over Xbox live for hours, just me and him in a cod party lobby. The pain in his voice knowing he didn't have a choice but to drop that child. The old man and the teenager were old enough to make that decision, the boy, was just wrong place at a bad time. And to be honest, makes me glad I was air force because idk if I could've make that same decision. You'll always have my respect johnny, love ya brother.

My grandfather told me a story from when he was in vietnam that was quite similar to this. Shortly be the start of the TET Offensive, he was on post on guard duty with a group of other men. The outpost CO essentialy told them they were expecting a large fire fight that would occur later at night due to reports (never came though). They were all told if anyone suspicious approaches, shoot first, ask later as they couldnt risk it. Later that night an old vietnamese lady walked up to wire just outside and he was aiming straight at head, a few seconds from pulling trigger, and she wandered off. Always said he was happy he never shot her because he couldnt imagine having to live with the guilt if it was just a lost old woman.

If i had to take a rough guess, it was something like the 553rd Supply and Support or engineer battalion or something along those lines. Id have to ask him again at some point. But mainly he was with truck units as passanger, then switched to driver at some point. He was stationed near Khe Sanh

My friend who did 2 tours as a door gunner in a transport heli told me a story of this exact scenario happening to him a man was shooting with an AK at the helicopter while holding his sons hand he shoot the father dead the son immediately picked up the AK and continued shooting at the helicopter without skipping a beat and he had to shoot the little kid also. He says it's one of the few things that still haunts him from being over there.

Spoke to a veteran from ISAF in Afghanistan. He told me the worst thing he ever did was to shoot a 16 year old. They where moving troops through the area and the kid was basically firing blindly. The guy explained the kid prolly "just protected his home". I asked him why he shot him if he wasnt that much of a threat, and he simply responded that "he was ordered to". He even doubled down on how he personally didnt think the kid would've done any harm (mostly firing up into the air) but that the order came through, and that it made sense. The thing people ignore is how a soldier is literally just a weapon system. Everything is about executing orders. If people understood this, maybe we'd pay more attention to the objectives of our wars. And perhaps we'd be a bit more understanding about veteran soldiers, not just the ones we get back, but the ones coming in as refugees. We're all bastards under the wrong circumstances.

I both do and don't blame the kid. The only thing this kid knows is a war is happening in his home. Yet, the zealots made these kids into soliders, that boy should be picking up a ball and playing not picking up a fucking RPG and that sniper should be home with his kids playing with them. It's always those in power making those with little power to be their pawns forced to kill each other.
