Man, this is exactly something I needed to hear. I feel like often try to fit a stereotype of who I think I’m supposed to be and I’m forever chasing this never ending cycle. Whether it be “outdoorsy” or “minimalist” instead of just being, doing, and wearing what feels right. I appreciate your videos like these, Chase. Thanks, man.

I have interpreted, for myself, that minimalism as an exercise in not collecting needlessly. You shouldn’t deprive yourself of things you enjoy. More living intentionally is another way to put it.

Exactly. Some people who try minimalism gets limited on what they can do based on the stuff they own and grows to hate minimalism because it's not "them", but when you change your perspective to owning the things that I NEED based on what I would like to do, you'll start living a more intentional life.

Minimalism is about being young and disconnected. Once you have kids and have lived a little, you will want to surround yourself with personal history and tools for living.

I go by a rule that if i don't use something for a year and haven't really thought about it, I get rid of it. And if I want something, i usually wait a little bit of time before I decide to buy, so its not so impulsive. But I always thought most people that preach minimalism constantly are often just pretentious

Thanks Chase, for getting this out. Ppl tend get lots of misconception of minimalism. The thing about minimalism is to get rid of materials that you DO NOT need and keep the things that you NEED. I no longer shop unconsciously just because its a good deal. I get rid of my 'collections' that I thought I like/need but I actually didn't until its gone. (e.g. watch collection, shit tons of clothing) But more importantly, I still splurge on things that I truly enjoy, travel, gadgets, gears, food etc. I get good quality stuff that lasts and reduce waste as much as possible. I hoard the happy things. I dump the unwanted stuffs. As you said, 'hey, I wanna live the life I truly want'

I am paring down to the things I enjoy and that work for me. I donated tons of books to schools and libraries and now use a Kindle and am a heavy library user. I don't buy new cameras and lenses anymore. I rent them to see if they work for me. I watch your bag reviews and resist until what I have falls apart. I spend a fair amount on tech, art, and clothes that I need/not want. I am getting it all down to what defines me and its not much but what there is stands out.

I recently ditched my drive to be minimalistic for the sake of being minimalistic. I took the parts about minimalism that worked and fulfilled me and left the rest that left me feeling good about my space and in my head. Its been very self reflecting and eye opening. Great video!

a few years ago you were talking about minimalist travel. and you suggested doing something similar with a dopp kit. I took everything out of my bathroom, then started building my personal kit. it took about a week for me to figure out everything that needed to be in there and what didn't. but I'm still living out of that to this day. my wife has put much more back into the bathroom and so have my kids. but me personally I have really refined what I need in the bathroom. I feel like doing this with lots of aspects of your life can have positive results. keep being you chase ✌️

Focusing on the number of items you own is such an unimportant metric which isn’t worth investing any thought on at all. See something you don’t use? Chuck it. It’s not that complicated. Life is short, invest your energy where it matters: relationships, activities, experiences, or anything else that makes you go to sleep with a smile on your face. No need to track everything. Just live.

I found this interesting because when I started getting into travel many years ago I would watch your videos daily while searching for the perfect travel bags and such, and it was you who introduced me to minimalism. Honestly I owe you my thanks because I would likely have not gone and watched the minimalism documentary had it not been for your recommendation. My minimalism journey has made such an immeasurable positive influence in my life, and I truly believe that if I had to pick just one thing in this world that could be considered the key to happiness/fulfillment it would be this lifestyle. With that being said I think I understand your points, especially in regards to the so called "influencers". Minimalism does take discipline, but it also is completely adaptable and customizable to each person's situation and goals. Also, discipline isn't a bad thing. Dieting takes discipline, exercising takes discipline, learning a new skill takes discipline, and those are all worthwhile endeavors. At the end of the day the whole point of minimalism isn't to hinder you, but to clear the excess in your life out of the way in order to make room for the things that actually matter to you.

Yup. Funny how materialistic some of those minimalists become as their channels find "success", and that's fine in and of itself, but the hypocrisy is so blatant that it's angering at first, but ultimately so hilarious. I like people who are simply real. I haven't commented on your channel before, but you voiced what I was thinking. Thanks for just being you. It's nice to see. (I know, that's your "mission statement.")

When I practice minimalism, its because I can't carry shit or I don't have the energy or mental capacity to organize things around the house. I love the 33 things experiment. I do it once a season and it totally works for my lifestyle. That said, I have a nest of music and sound equipment and cassette tapes in my basement co-mingling with relics from my past and random tools that keenly advertises that I am middle aged and not minimal in all things.

I prefer the practice of “living mindfully” to “minimalism.” Minimalism these days feels less like a philosophy and more like a trendy pastime for privileged people. Many folks in the world already “live with less” due to patriarchy, capitalism, colonization, and racism. I can only hope that living with fewer things in our collective closets will free up some brain space to work on these problems.

Minimalism just means not filling your life/spaces with things that are of no value to yourself. It isn't about some specific aesthetic.

Going to rant here for a minute. This is what BUGS THE CRAP outta me... I enjoy watching people who travel and can pare down in an inventive way to lighten the load. What gets me are the girls who think their video is special because they start off their post with something like: Minimalist, and How I Travel In Only A Carry On, blah, blah, blah. For the record we can all travel in a carry-on only, that's not impossible. BUT, here's the kicker, then in their video they highly recommend compression cubes because they can fit MORE stuff inside. Good gracious, that is just ridiculous, and they cloud the allure of true minimalism in the sense of packing light for the freedom of easibility.

@Stormbrise
@Stormbrise 7 ай бұрын
Actually you got the stoic part wrong. They are trying everyday to fight their demons, addictions, their complaining, etc with stoic philosophy. Yeah they write books on it. However if you listen to Ryan Holiday in his longer interviews he does say he has to work at this everyday and that some days are better than others. I am trying to curb my autistic meltdowns with some stoic philosophy, and i am FAR from being stoic. Though I have resting native bitch face, I am not stoic. So take it with a grain of salt, find what works for you, and practice daily. Don’t just complain that someone does something that you do not agree with and complain about it.
