Arnarvatnsvegur (578) is a road located in Western Iceland. Middle part of that route has the “F” marking, making it an F-road, which are unique mountain & highland roads in Iceland, officially opened only during the summer months. In this video we drive through F578 (& 578) in its full length, starting from road 704 in the north and ending at road 523 in the west. Distance of the route is 82,3 km (51 miles long), while the max elevation sits around 595 meters (1952 ft). However, there aren’t any steep and sudden climbs or descents on this road. As always, vehicle with good ground clearance is recommended, as the road is filled with corrugations, potholes and smaller rocks. F578 is famous for providing access to many fishing lakes that are mainly located in the middle of the route. The biggest of them is called Arnarvatn Stóra. F578 also used to have a pretty decent river crossing, but now there is a new bridge going over it, so that isn’t a problem anymore. On KZfaq there are still some older videos about that river crossing on F578. The place for fording is still there, so you can still have a go, if you feel like it. Since we were really behind our schedule, we skipped the fording and took the bridge… and sadly we also skipped Surtshellir cave, that’s another beautiful place located on F578. But we were extremely lucky with the weather, with a nice sunshine all the way and it was a beautiful drive between lakes and green fields and lava fields at the end.
