Hi! I'm pretty sure this loop is doable with a Jimny. There was one river that I was kind of suspicious about before driving that road (due to a video I found myself on KZfaq), but in reality it turned out to be quite shallow. However, the conditions can be different every year. Lets just say that during my drive through this road was 100% driveable with a Jimny (including rivers). Most likely the rangers staying at the mountain hut next to Laki craters can give you information via phone in advance regarding the depth of the rivers. Good luck with your trip!

Yes, indeed there is always a stop before and after the crossings and there have been different reasons. First one is to switch the car into 4-low mode (as in order to do that I have to stop and put the gearbox into neutral first. I did that before the deepest crossings, usually I just used 4-high... and then switching back to "normal" mode after the crossing). Secondly to assess the river (where is the flow going and what trajectory to choose specifically). And yes, sometimes if it was possible, my wife went to record the crossing outside and then I waited for her to get back in the car. But I was lucky that never did the water come inside the car, so there was no draining needed. :)

That's a good question and to be honest, at the moment in my opinion the only purpose is attracting tourists to drive through it... There used to be some farms or at least I saw one or two buildings there. But I don't think there is anyone living there now permanently, most likely just summer homes. Of course if I'm wrong then all the Westfjord residents feel free to correct me. :)

Perhaps its a road to access the lighthouse at the tip?

Hi and sorry for the long delay replying your questions! Thank you for the kind feedback. Well, my GoPro is realllllly old, it's 2nd generation. And yes, it's mounted towards the right, as I have a 70mai dashcam in the middle. So I record with 2 cameras to be sure that I get at least some footage if one of them happens to fail and both of them are connected to a car charger via USB cables. Fun fact - I could not find a proper car mount for that old gopro... so I just glued the normal gopro stand (that is used to place it on a table) onto the windshield... and then carved a hole at the side of the case to access the charging port... :) This also means that my gopro is always recording upside down and I flip the picture during the editing. Since it's 1st of February, it's too late for me to wish you a "Happy new year", so I shall wish you the best of fortune in 2024 and good luck with your trips!

Hi and yes, close to the mountain hut was the starting point of at least 3 different hiking trails across the mountain next to it. All of them had different distances, we just took the shortest one which was straight up the mountain and back. During the summer there is a ranger in the hut who can provide you the information about the trails.

I think F910 starting from the east towards lake Askja is pretty long, twisty, slow paced and demanding. Sadly I haven't done it yet, but apparently F910 from Askja to Nyidalur is the toughest (or so they claim...)

Hi! Yes, 2WD should be able to handle most of the roads in Westfjords. Definitely all main roads that connect the towns as well as some mountain roads (except some very specific roads like F66 or 622). All the tunnels in Westfjords are free. At the moment I think there is only one tunnel in entire Iceland that has a toll fee and that is located in the north after Akureyri (on the route 1 going towards Húsavík).

Hi! Thanks and yeah, the road has improved during the last years. In 2020 it still had the "mountain vehicles" sign on www.road.is, implying that a 4WD vehicle is needed. But in 2022 (maybe even in 2021) this sign was gone on the webpage and now it's doable with with simple passenger cars. :) Good luck with your next trip!

I agree with you regarding the road condition, I went there (Skálar, Fontur) in 2007. the weather was excellent and I didn't meet anyone all day, mass tourism was still unknown in Iceland 😊

Yeah the fog can seriously mess everything up on these mountain roads! For me were the roads to Látrabjarg and Rauðisandur that were completely ruined by the fog. I was hoping to make drive-through videos of these mountain roads as well, but dropped the idea as only a very thick fog and the hood of the car can be seen on these clips... :)

Mais dans la région des Westfjords, un 4x4 basique comme un Jimny ou un Duster devrait pouvoir traverser la plupart des routes. Je dirais qu'un 4x4 plus gros n'est nécessaire que sur les routes de montagne difficiles comme la F66 ou la route 622.
