Ford updated the 5.0L Coyote V8 to the 4th Generation in 2021. This new Coyote came with some major changes due to government EPA regulations, which could leave consumers unhappy. Engine Auto start / stop and cylinder deactivation were now standard on these new engines. Because of the chip shortage engine auto start / stop was automatically deleted for 2022 but cylinder deactivation is still present on my F150. There are some good changes that happened but we will cover those in a later video.

I have not seen any failures of the 4th Gen Coyote, which came out in 2021. The belt driven oil pump appears to have solved the gear driven oil pump issues, at least so far... I see numerous videos of the new 12:1 compression 5.0 with Whipple supercharges upholding 775+ hp with no issues. I am a retired Ford Senior Master technician who just purchased a 2022 and 2023 F150 5.0L trucks and I am amazed at the power and drivability. So much so, that I just purchased the Whipple charger for my personal truck. I will agree that anything "man made" can have faults or defects, and maybe it is to early to tell. But from my extensive research on this engine platform and success so far, my opinion is that with modern build tolerances, this engine will last. I have followed Ford engineering techniques for 30+ years and feel that their innovation is at least superior to Salantis and GMC,

hey mark just a question i have a 2015 f150 coyote engine and love it! zero problems, when i seen that they decided to drive the oil pump with a belt i felt this was a bad idea as how long is that going to last? i thought it was to gain a couple of hp thats why they went with a belt....but what was wrong with the the old gear driven oil pumps? never heard of them quitting or is it just a certain year that they had problems? thanks!

@@user-co6wx1bu6nIt’s my understanding that with power adders such as turbos or superchargers the internal gears/lobes could fracture with the gear driven oil pumps. The real solution was just to use better materials in the pump and there are kits out there to change out the internals or just replace the whole pump with a high performance pump. The problem I see with the belt driven pump is if you do have to replace the belt you are going to have to take the whole timing chain system out because the timing chains to the cams are in front of the oil pump belt.

Kevin: thank you for the excellent vid! I really appreciate the info that you shared. I will soon be buying a brand new 2023 F-150 with the Coyote 5L V8 engine. I'm not a fan of auto start/stop or cylinder deactivation (CD). I'm happy that the auto start/stop will not be provided in my 2023 build. But of course, it will come with CD. I was surprised to hear you say that sport mode and tow/haul mode did not deactivate the CD in your truck, only because I have read all over the internet that sport mode and tow/haul mode deactivates it. So, if you are correct, then it sounds to me like the only reasonably easy option to get rid of the CD is to implement a custom tune, such as the one sold by the Livernois company or 5 Star. Do you have any input or comments on either of those?

Thanks to the cylinder deactivation on the L83 of my 2017 Suburban, the cylinder 6 valve lifter broke and the whole bank's head gasket and a whole bunch of parts had to be replaced. This was at about 48,000 miles. I have just recently traded it in for a new Ram 2500 Laramie with the 6.7 Cummins.

I don’t believe the Coyote cylinder deactivation will suffer from the valve train issues the the pushrods do. The Coyote system isn’t lifter dependent on deactivating-reactivating the valve and doesn’t have anything like the VLOM manifold system to leak internally. Pushrods 💩

Change your oil more often. 9 out of 10 AFM failures are due to idiots not changing their oil often enough, thinking that full-synthetic oil means they shouldn't have to change it every 5000 miles.
@JROC734
@JROC734 Жыл бұрын
@@hochhaul For the most part I agree with this. My 19 1SS 1LE never had an issue. While being a M6 car it didn't use AFM, it still is built with all the hardware to use AFM. With that said regardless of whether or not my vehicle has DOD I change my oil between 3,500 to 4,000 miles at most. That's on me and my wifes DD. On my non-DD vehicles I won't go past 3K miles due to them not getting changed as frequently. Do I have to change my oil this frequently when all I use is synthetic oils? Maybe not, but I've not had major mechanical failure since switching to synthetic oil and using this system either. I started using synthetic oil in the early 2,000's in my early 20's. For a modern GM vehicle with DOD and DI I highly recommend using only oils with the DEXOS2 rating. They are formulated to play nice with AFM/DFM lifters, and to have less carbon buildup on your intake values. They do a pretty good job of it as well. They can be a little more pricey, and maybe not "as easy" to find, but they're not hard to find either, and if you order your oil off the internet then sourcing it is a non-issue. I will say I worked with a guy who bought a 21 Silverado LT Z71, and GM had to buy him a new L83 after barely hitting 3,100 miles. That's some BS, but at least he didn't need a new engine at 36,001 miles. I also knew a guy who had a lifter take out his cam on a stock 16 Camaro SS. He drove that car pretty hard, but I don't think he really neglected it either. Whatever the case he ended up trading it in on a then brand new 19 Silverado.

True..but using one of those makes it think you're towing so it changes other parameters like turning off your backup sensors, etc. There are a few other ways to deactivate it. I have a dongle that plugs into the OBDII connector that keeps it set at whatever your last setting was without any other "side-effects". Some people just unplug the BMS at the battery because if the computer doesn't know the state of the battery, it keeps start/stop in "off" mode. This method has caused some people to get codes and lights but most report no issues.

I have a 22 and the only way I notice the cylinder deactivation is on the fuel economy readout when it jumps from 16 to 25 or more. My only disappointment so far has been that I’m only averaging 17 mpg with 2,500 miles on the truck while my 15 was getting 19 on 87 octane and the old 6 speed automatic. I run 93 octane in the new one because of the higher compression ratio and I have the good rearend gearing which hurts gas mileage a bit but definitely helps acceleration. One other note about the cylinder deactivation is that GM and Ram have had issues because they are overhead valve designs and use the lifters to deliver the cylinder deactivation and they have had lifter failures. Ford uses overhead cam engines so there are no lifters to fail.

So I'm new to Ford, never owned a vehicle w/ cylinder deactivation and just bought a 2024 F-150 XL. I've only got 130-miles of seat time (dealership to home) so have not yet developed the sensitivity to small changes in performance. What is it that is happening that you know the deactivation and reactivation has occurred (I don't hear any change in sound and don't see an indicator showing the gear your in)? Is there an RPM range where it will occur (looked like you were at 1K for a while and then at 1.1K)? Until this vid I also thought that Sport, Toe, or Sand modes prevented the deactivation. It wouldn't have made a difference but when I specifically asked the Salesman he told me the truck did not have it??? Did something change for the 2024 model year? Thanks FYI-read some of the comments and had recently seen a vid discussion the oil pump belt having Kevlar added and the pump is a billet for the 2024. (don't know if that was fact but the guy did say it was a Ford Engineer that took pictures and provided the info.) Thanks

@@pecanpie100 Yes sir, I originally went with the Livernois tune, E85 and 93 gas. This eliminated the cylinder deactivation and added pretty impressive power on E85. I was really happy to hear that they have existed in Dearborn Michigan since the 1940's, so I figured they must have some inroads with Ford. I ended up going with the Whipple supercharger and I am currently running their tune, and so far I am pretty satisfied with its performance and transmission management. I may go to the Livernois Whipple tune, but they did not have it ready when I installed my Whipple on my 2023 F150 Platinum. Cylinder deactivation has a history of breaking engines. Mostly affecting people in very flat lands, doing mostly highway driving and not hauling anything as the cylinder deactivation is used the most. After a while, the cylinders that aren't running become much cooler than the ones that are running and that temperature difference creates head gasket leaks and oil issues.

Pros and cons. The material is roughly twice as hard as a liner. So it doesn’t wear or break in easy. If everything is perfect, it’s better. But it pushes the wear to the rings, and causes oil use because it doesn’t break in well. It’s been out for a while. My 18 uses some oil in normal driving. But uses none when towing. Seems like the extra heat seals the rings better. Imperfect castings 🤷🏻‍♂️

Any 3/4 or 1-ton. Or you just disable it on your 1/2 ton. Ford's EPA highway mileage for a 2024 F150 4x4 with the Coyote is 24 mpg, which is damn good for a truck (and about equivalent to an Ecoboost). But you won't get that kind of mileage without cylinder deactivation. No manufacturer is *required* to use cylinder deactivation. They all chose to. It helps them upsell people to V8s when they can point out that they don't use significantly more gas than a 4 or 6 cylinder.

@@BuiltDifferent13 I 100% disagree, and one of the main reasons I went with a GEN3 Coyote/10R80 F150 over a L87/10L80 Silverado was the transmission performance. GM seems to have missed the fact that they have 10 gears, and they tune the truck to shift lazy like an old 4 speed automatic. Typical GM wanting to force the engine to lug up to speed. The 5L/10R80 on the other hand is a very quick and willing to downshift setup, but not in an annoying way. I love the 5L/10R80 setup in my 18 F150. It is excellent, and blows the performance of a 5L/6R80 away. 10R80 issues are way overblown IMHO. It's a good transmission.

I think you pretty much answered your own question as to why CY deactivation was mandatory. Like it or not, CY deactivation isn't to improve fuel economy or some weird feature. It's to reduce pollution in the air which causes shift in climate/weather change: Think floods, fires, and air quality. If a bunch of people took the time to maintain their vehicles to help reduce pollution, we wouldn't be forced to drive hybrid or full electric vehicles in the coming years. I am sticking with GAS engines, and keep a few brand new gas vehicles in my garage before the law changes.

The EPA has already ruined modern Diesel engines, government regulations are trying to push out the V8 as well. The variable displacement gasoline engines are taking over - better economy and performance and reliability is basically the same. Modern turbo's are very good. The pro's the V8 has over the variable displacement engine is the sound and cheaper easier maintenance and a more simple design. Better reliability of the V8 over the 3.5 EB is not proven.
