FULL EPISODE: The incredible and explosive story of former Jordan F1 driver Bertrand Gachot. In 1991, Gachot's F1 career was derailed after he was sentenced to 18 months in prison following an altercation with a London taxi driver. The fallout sparked a bitter feud with his former Team Principal, Eddie Jordan, and led to the Formula 1 debut of Michael Schumacher.
Now a successful entrepreneur, Bertrand is reunited with Eddie, and David Coulthard, to tell the full story on FFS!
This episode was recorded in March 2023. You can listen to brand new episodes of FFS! every Thursday on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and wherever else you get your podcasts.
Produced by Whisper.

This was wild for me to watch. As an Irishman, seeing a green Irish car in F1 in 1991 was incredible. I was a massive Jordan fan from the moment that car showed up. Trying to get into the top 6 and score points in a time of Senna, Prost, Mansell, Piquet, Berger, Patrese was no joke. I think it took the team a long time to get over losing Bertrand. A disaster for everyone involved. The hype is real. I am so happy to see things worked out well for Bertrand in his post-racing life. I could have easily watched another hour of this. The guy is so cool. I would have liked to hear a lot more about Andrea deCesaris. With 16 races, no internet and parents who made me go to bed for school on Sunday nights, it wasn't always easy as a fan to see every interview or get much behind the scenes news at the time. I remember him being great at Ferrari and great for Jordan in '91 too. RIP Andrea. Cool stuff. :D

Its a shame Andrea's no longer with us. Riccardo Patrese was his teammate at Brabham in 1987, and said he was a great guy, and a very fast driver, but disorganised. As it turns out, De Cesaris had a 'blinking twitch', maybe a neurological condition, and if he had an attack of this in a race, he'd spin or crash the car. But from '91 onwards, he became a new driver, and could have won at Belgium in 1991.

His retelling of the taxi driver incident was obviously quite biased. That's the thing. Road rage is one thing, but then spraying tear gas into somebody's face is always going to get you punished in this country. Just the fact that you have a can of it in your car is pretty bad. Most people do not feel the need to do that in this country. EJ is obviously a crook, but we have all known this for a long time.

As a kid in Dublin, a sudden huge Jordan fan (having already loved Ferrari since Monza '88), and Gachot being my new favourite driver, I was totally shocked! I'm really glad to see everything worked out well and Eddie and Bertrand on such good terms now - that's the important thing.

This is one of the best things I’ve listened to this year. I loved the candour and the humour. I loved some of the vivid descriptions that Bertrand gave about some of his racing moments. I found this fascinating and entertaining and educational . I think you could probably do a whole day with Bertrand Gachot and have no chance of being bored. I will probably listen to this again, to better absorb everything. I found it satisfying that Eddy and Bertrand found a way to come together again, after their turbulent times. Full marks to DC for steering this interview in the way that he did, it was nicely measured. Thank you to all three of you for a riveting podcast. Very very very nice, well spoken and intelligent man and what a joy to finally hear him speak! But dear Bertrand, there is no way in hell the 787b did 400kmh. The fastest speed anyone has ever reached after the chicanes were implemented was mark blundell in 1990 with his wastegate stuck and about 1200-1300hp on tab. Thats about twice what the mazda had in race trim. And he did about 362 between the chicanes. Just saying, the mazda is overhyped enough.

I don't think anyone is surprised that Eddie would be so ruthless. He's typical of many people in business. They've got an evil streak but that's not how they see it. That said, if he's the guy footing the bill then you can understand it to a degree. It was good that they've reconciled and Eddie initiated that showed he doesn't hold any grudges and he's helping Bertrand's daughter with her career shows he's genuine - he didn't have to do that.

Superb. I was lucky enough to be at the 91 British Grand Prix as a 10yr old, was gutted when Bert had his scrape with the law great to see all’s just about forgiven!

Wouldve loved an interview like this between many drivers over the years, Senna/Prost, Schuey and many drivers, even Hamilton and Rosberg, Ocon and every team mate or Max.

In the press they labeled Bertrand as a criminal and this is so wrong. They also describe this as CS counter strike gas? That's a bit much too.
