Hi!
This weeks episode I'm taking a look at the design of the Ferrari Roma. It has caught a lot of attention for the similarities with the latest Aston Martin, but for me there are many more reasons we should be paying attention to this car.
Thanks,
What do you think of the 2020 Ferrari Roma?

I don't think it will be optional (too complicated to develop both ways), but you're right. In 10-15 years analogue instruments will become a luxury feature, much like mechanical watches these days.

Digital dashes were a thing in the 80s and 90s, particularly in American luxury car brands... Once they lost their novelty, analog gauges had their comeback. I guess a combination of screens, buttons and gauges would be optimal (although I could do without a screen), but probably not so cost effective.

This is actually the first Ferrari in a long time that I simply love for its looks. They lost me since the 458, however impressive a car that is. It's interesting to see that Ferrari estimates 70% of the buyers will be new to the brand. That explains why they could let go off a lot of the traditional DNA like the badge on the side.

I think the whole car was designed under the motif of subtle, almost organic change of material; gradually transitioning horizontally. Most evident in the front grill’s transition from solid to open (also the reason for the same color), and the head/tail lights minimalist lines that follow the shadows created by the slight curves. Great design

I teach at a German University and in a class of 25 only one student would choose the Ferrari language of design over Porsche or BMW, and that student was Italian. Society really does inform us. I’m British Italian and have made it my job to influence my students to appreciate design. Thanks for your fabulous insights.
@connor8627
@connor8627 3 жыл бұрын
For me it’s hard to say that the design language of one top car brand is superior to another. Of course people will have their preferences but we should all appreciate equally the unique artistic/creative expression encapsulated in each design. Take the Holy Trinity of hypercars (P1, 918, LaFerrari) I love them all equally but for very different reasons. The cars speak to the individual in different ways but that doesn’t mean one is any less beautiful or awe-inspiring than the other
@sarcatstix
@sarcatstix 3 жыл бұрын
I acknowledge your point totally. I noted there is a certain trend towards an aesthetic within groups. Living in Germany with its bauhaus modernism juxtaposed with fachwerk timber framing seems to influence design. efficiency is valued extremely highly here. Lamborghini has an aesthetic very different to Ferrari but both speak to me of Italianess as does the Alfa. I have restored 3 Jaguar xk140s so my love of voluptuous sweeping curves should be obvious and yet while I appreciate Porsche’s curves I don’t love them. Completely subjective in that sense but looking through the history of art you can see a cultures influence on the art and design it creates.
@connor8627
@connor8627 3 жыл бұрын
@@sarcatstix I completely agree, it's also worth noting just how much design language is informed by era/time-period. Take the boxiness and sharp lines of cars from the 80's (F40/E30 M3) and compare it to the curves/voluptuousness of cars from the 90's (F50/XJ220). Trends are subject to constant change
@sarcatstix
@sarcatstix 3 жыл бұрын
Connor Reid Oh totally, there are certain Lancias that can be seen as “boxy” the countsch with its futuristic planes - but they all have something that makes them work. I really appreciate some American muscle cars dynamics from the 70s. (And a huge soft spot for the cinquecento). Time changes tastes and rightly so - each era adds something.

Congrats on 60k, Frank! I agree that the grille being the same color as the body is a bit jarring. When the no-grille Teslas first came out, it was very strange to look at....like a face with no mouth. As we became exposed to that visual signature, we became more comfortable with it. With electric cars becoming more prevalent, this "hidden grille" will become more commonplace, I think. It feels odd on a Ferrari, though, since the grille subconsciously communicates the need to cool off an awesomely powerful engine (I'm purely speaking from a perception standpoint here).

*Hi there Frank! - I just found your evaluation of Beiber's West Coast Custom build ('diplomatic' - to say the least), and from there I went to watch your take on the Roma. and let me tell you I'm just **_thrilled_** to be fully on board with your honest assessment of this beauty! (The missing 'Stallion' logos on the side is in my mind actually a no-brainer...) All in all, your critically observant eyes **_definitely_** qualifies to a subscription! . . . .* ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💓

As always great to hear your thoughts! I totally agree on the rear fender. The intent seems clear to me that they were going for a calmer feeling for this GT. Also hinted at by the pretty much vertical (in side view) intersection on the lower body side.

I totally agree about the grill, I was shocked the way the left and right ends of the grill terminate, it looks stuck on, I think your suggestion is a big improvement as it mask that awkward connection. Many years ago I had two Ferraris, a 308 GTS and a 400 I, presently my daily driver is an Aston Martin Vanquish. I’m a not car designer (interior architecture) but I’ve been a designer all my life and it’s a pleasure watching your podcast. I am a total car person, I’ve had all kinds of cars & I loved everyone of them.

Glad to know Frank agrees with me regarding the front grill'e's option of painting it body-coloured. I think it just tries to hide the grille from the design but not in a good way.

Excellent review in all the technical details and personal points of view. The Roma is more Fashionista than Pista therefore no side badge is correct, however, that front grille needs a little bit more grunt (Cazzo!) Love to hear your comments on the new Maserati MC20 - an epic return to form.

Subbed! It’s great to hear such information in a cool and informative manner. I’ve always been passionate about industrial design, especially automotive design. How a designer can create a shape or shapes on an object built to take you from point A to B that elicit feelings. That make you look at an inanimate tool and categorize it as beautiful.

Great analysis and agree with most of your remarks. I worked there for more than 10 years and what I miss regards especially the interiors... too digital, I do miss some analog controls and, as you said, the engine start on the steering wheel! But really, great comments... this is one of my favorite modern Ferrari!

The F430 has always been iconic in design. I love it since I have a Spyder. Incredible job on your design. I don't like the Roma at all. Looks like a Jag. Make a smaller version of the F12 TDF and you'll have a winner forever. I know these are all about aerodynamics; but this one is a step back in design.

Hi Frank. Thank you for your great review of Ferrari’s drop dead gorgeous Roma! It’s design language reminds me a lot of the classic Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona, especially from the side view, with the front lights having a similar shape, and the window line sweeping up over the rear wheel arches. Your reviews are always fascinating and inspiring!
