Hi!
In this weeks episode, I'm looking at the MC20. Obviously, this is a project very dear to my heart as I designed the 'predecessor', the MC12. How close are these two designs? You'll have to watch the full episode to see what I think...
Enjoy!

Yeah, they are some of the best lights ever fitted to a production car. Really wish that Maserati internal rivalry didn’t escalate to that. Cause that design could’ve come into this car. The new ones reminded me more of the new Alpine A110 than squashed GT lights but either way, it’s bad

I couldn't agree more. I think that the design of most of the current crop of super cars are too "busy", with far too much going on. I love the pure, understated simplicity of this car in both its look and choice of drivetrain. It's a refreshing change. But hey, I'm a less is more kinda guy.

W220 is still holding the title, imo. Economic health eventually affects design and manufacturing, in Germany especially. Where cutting costs on dash design with tablets, plastic molding changes enough to call it a generation, and perhaps some code updates, is what the new S-Class has become, truly disappointing. But then again, baseless and authoritarian regulatory enforcement on "green" stuff also pressures manufacturers to do wacky stuff.

To be honest, I like the understatedness of the car. I especially like how the air intakes at the rear fenders aren't overly present. For the wheels, rather than highlighting the trident I would have liked if the inside of those three shapes brought back the concave shape pointed out as a defining feature of the Maserati front grill. If we do get a wilder version I'd like an active rear wing and maybe something not quite an edge, but some kind of tightening of the curvature along the fender line drawn in red in the video. Also, 100 times yes on keeping the interior more tactile. I hate how so much design is hiding buttons and such away the past decade. I dont want a surface that magically does something when you touch the right spot. Give me a visible and tactile button to push, please.

The point is that it doesn't have characteristics of historical Maseratis. He clearly stated that it is a beautiful car, just not a great design for a Maserati. In fact it looks generic, just like what happened with the McLaren MP4-12C. If you take the Maserati badge out of this car and put the McLaren badge on it, sure no one can argue with that. This car could hug any badge you put on it without being really great with anyone of them, just because the fact is it is too generic. That is not to say it is ugly. Far from it, it is beautiful but not unique enough. Again, generic.

Frank shouldn't keep referring to the MC12 as the ultimate Maserati. I don't think that design is aging well. To me it comes off as fussy and boy-racer. It is mostly show and not that much go! 5:20 could it be that it has such a large drag coefficient because it emphasizes downforce and cornering ability rather than straight-line speed (where minimal drag is preferred)? On a side note - absolutely love your channel. I discovered it today and I am obsessed. Thank you so much and keep making great videos!!

I like the bommerang taillights on the 3200 GT(I don’t love them like you do), but I don’t think they’d work nearly as well on the MC20. They look good on the GT because they follow they bodywork of the car, but to me the shape of the MC20 doesn’t lend itself to the boomerangs. I think the chosen design is better.

Another fascinating video. I was fortunate enough to attend the 3200GT launch then see the car under construction in Modena. A quirky beast that made you feel separate from the crowd. Goodness only knows what Frank's former boss was thinking on by removing the boomerang. Thanks for the great work on the channel.

I agree about the great boomerang taillights. It actually looks like they belong on this MC20 and were omitted.

Frank, I remember being a kid in elementary school and seeing the MC12 in a book called Ultra Cool Rides. I believe the car is on the cover. Anyways, I liked the car so much that the library let me keep the book. It’s great to see the man behind the legendary car, thanks for making a positive impact on my childhood through awesome cars.

I enjoyed this video very much for 2 reasons: 1.) You chose a vehicle that you obviously don’t love, but find fascinating and have a personal connection in. 2.) You dove deeper into the technicalities of design. I learn a lot from your videos and have been inspired by you to start creating my own designs, so I really appreciate you taking a bit more time to explain design principles.

I never expected I would disagree with the designer of the MC12. I love the MC20 design. The .38 cof does need work, but I suspect that is the fault of EU requirements for road cars. e.g. limitations on airflow control surfaces on road legal cars. (wings, spoilers, underbody, and aero flow conditioning elements) Is it a better design than the MC12... No - they are both wonderful. I would not be able to decide.

Question for Frank: did Maserati ever approach you to work on the MC20, for designing, advice, or approving the final design? If I were Maserati, I would invite the designer of the MC12 immediately and ask for advice before starting on the MC20, but it seems like Maserati never asked you anything.

Perfromance cars don't have very good C_d values. Some of the vehicles with the worse C_d values are F1 cars f.e. where C_d values are ~ 0.7. In performance cars you want to reduce lift (push the car down onto the road to improve the load on the wheels, high speed stability and medium to high-speed cornering). The cost of reducing lift is drag because whatever manipulates airflow causes drag fprces as well. Usually a good design has a high aerodynamic efficiency ( | C_L | / C_D) and specifically flat underbodies and larger diffusors are favorable to large wings as there reduce lift at "lower drag costs" but airflow over a rear wing is much easier to understand and manipulate as the air is relaitvely undisturbed so far. Spoiler like on the C7 Corvette with the Z07 package are probably least efficient in that regard but if you have enough HP and or travel at low speeds it might not matter (in the short term).
