With the new 2022 GR86 and BRZ upgrading to the 2.4L FA24 engine, our engineers sourced a US spec FA24F to kick off our supercharged FA24 engine development on our Race 86.
Here's a preview of our initial performance testing on our Mainline ProHub dyno in anticipation for more updates in 2022!

Great to see an Australian engineering company still exists in motor racing with R&D still happening. I think 350-375WHP would be a good amount for a daily GR86 as long as the boxer engine can last a good 250000kms at that power output otherwise the mustang is an easy winner. I’ve heard the FA24 has thin cylinder liners and high compression so low boost is key. Can’t wait to see more on the GR86.

IMO, the 86 with a Harrop supercharger is a beautiful thing. I was running the Harrop supercharger with a 75mm pulley making a bar a boost on E85 with an Ace header, stock front pipe, Greddy Supreme SP exhaust, and when I would go WOT, the engine note was just perfect. The control of a positive displacement supercharger made the car so easy to control where it was instantly clear how much power I was going to get, and I could control the throttle for power delivery like a surgeon with a scalpel. Eventually, I put a rod through the block making so much torque on a stock block. I considered my option and ultimately sold the supercharger and went with a K24 turbo swap, and while I love the car, it is far more race car now. The engine sits higher, so it doesn't have the same handling characteristics. The engine shakes more because it isn't a well-balanced boxer motor. The turbo is a G25-660 in the smallest trim, so lag can be nearly non-existent, and the torque comes on low, but it just doesn't have the immediate urgency of the supercharger, nor does it have the linear pull of the supercharger. The turbo has more of a surge in torque, which is fun, but it doesn't reward the driver the same. It is a car that you hold on for the ride more than precisely controlling the power delivery, so in that way, I can confidently say that the supercharger is better. I may keep my K24T 86 as a ridiculous track toy, but it is no longer the ideal everyday sports car. I'm looking forward to seeing what Harrop produces for the GR86. My eyes glance up market at times at the Cayman and Lotus Emira with interest, but I really can't imagine too many things that could be better than a GR86 with a new Harrop supercharger pushing over 400whp and singing to 7500 rpms. This is the experience of a free-revving, low-displacement, Japanese sounding engine with V8 power and with NA response in something 800-1000lbs less than a Camaro or Mustang. Buy it! Keep it forever!

That handling difference is probably the shift towards rear bias. Also, the K series is a much better balanced and smoother motor than the FA.

Was this result running e85 or 98? Also what's the production update. I'm in the market for a supercharger but I think other companies might be doing a bit more testing on 12.5 compression motor.

Subaru SUVs are actually better at off-roading than most oversized SUVs. A turbo and intercooler upgrade would suffice.

I wish the Subaru Ascent had different power and drive modes like Audi. Same power all the time sometimes I want more torque and other times I want better mpg. They could easily attain that because they use electronic waste gates and blow off valves. Simply tuning of those PIDs could increase torque without being too much and other tuning would allow a different boost map to allow more time with less exaggerated positive pressure.

Does the fa24 out of the ascent bolt right to the brz transmission? It's built for boost out of the gate. Might be a cool swap into older brz and 86.

The turbo would be able to push more hp but the high compresion of he engine doesnt like that, so its better go for a supercharger.

The low numbers was 93 octane and the higher Hp was on E85 and smaller supercharger pulley. Probably 3 psi more!

The FA24 in the new BRZ is 12.5:1 CR like the old one. Assuming you have E85 available to you it's not that big of a problem

Wikipedia says the FA24D is 12.5:1, some people say it's 13.5:1 and some even say that there's a difference between the GR86 and BRZ (with the GR retaining the 12:5 CR and the BRZ being 13.5:1, which is ridiculous because they're practically identical in power) Where did you get that info?

How much weight does the supercharger set up add? Was the compression 12.5:1 or stock ascent 10.6:1? If this supercharger makes similar numbers in the new brz/gr86 they’ll be quick as hell

Wouldn't a centrifugal supercharger be better for a circuit track racer? Centrifugals allow the use of an a2a intercooler, has higher efficiency (lower intake air temps), and is lighter. Does not have the low end grunt of a TVS but circuit racers keep revs up high anyway.

Yes agreed. I’ve had cars with roots type supercharger and they heat soak badly and the air to water HX is not very effective. Once it’s heat soaked, it’s done. An air to air HX is the best.

Harrop is a Eaton supercharger official retailer, if they were the official retailer of Paxton or Vortech then they would be doing R+D for that brand. Additionally, Harrop is a aftermarket supplier for the domestic on-road market not for exclusively race teams. Their race car is simply a test bed, if it works in the harsh race environment it's going to work in a regular guys daily driver.

Yeah idk why people are sharing this video around as if it's relevant to stock GR/BRZs. The closest most people are gonna get to this is ascent piston swaps, if that's the only difference.

But if you plan to go F.I. right away, with forged internals, then this is kinda relevant. Still probably cheaper just to find a wrecker FA24F motor and drop it in an old BRZ chassis

You do realise that the FA24F from the Ascent, Outback amd Legacy isn't the same as the FA24D in the GR86/BRZ, right? Different compression ratio, different connecting rods, different pistons and I wouldn't be surprised if there are differences in the cylinder heads and valvetrain between these 2 engines.

Good questions. Time will tell. I’m glad they started the clock so we can follow and see how it goes over time under the additional duress. I ran ethanol on my last track car and will plan the same with this engine as well unless problems arise from trials.

Couldn’t you just swap the entire fa24 engine and turbo into an frs then mod that? Ascent 260hp stock.

It’s the same as the Gr 86 just lower compression. So the Gr will probably make 15-20 whp more with the better thermal efficiency cause of the higher compression and as long your tuning E85 your not going to be timing limited at hi boost levels

What happened to these guys? Had a nice kit for the BRZ\86 then fell off the face of the earth. They gave some "retooling" excuse like 18 months ago. Sounds like bigger problems to me.
