Fable - The Flawed Gem That Could Never Deliver

Despite the fondness I have for the Fable series and the first game in particular... revisiting the game made it painfully clear that the nostalgia is definitely viewed through rose tinted glasses.

I remember when I got my first OG Xbox I got Ninja Gaiden Black, GTA San Andreas and Fable the Lost Chapters and two DVDs of TMNT and DBZ in like 2007 or 08 so I missed the 360 release and Halo games but I remember making my Fable character always look like Ryu Hayabusa as much as I can and just this era of games were awesome but Fable 2 was the last good Fable game and same goes to Ninja Gaiden 2 the last good games from those franchises their sequels never lived up to the originals

*Fable was my first open world RPG and the reason I gave Skyrim a chance when it came out 👍 Fable 2 I hated everything about.....but 3 i really enjoyed 😍 still though, nothing beats the way Fable 1 made me feel. I consider it the perfect RPG* 🙌

Oh you didn’t enjoy 2? I’ve heard people more critical of 3 than 2! Still think I’ll pick up 2&3 and give them go again soon.

I loved Fable 1 and 2, but I wouldn’t be surprised to find out they don’t hold up that well. Still, at the time of release they were a breath of fresh air. Their combination of portraying evil effectively and comedic elements is something I don’t think other games have achieved as successfully.

The experience going back was definitely jarring, but by the end I was softening and definitely interested in picking up the second game. You’re right the tone and portrayal of evil while blending in humour were definitely unique. Not a fan of number 3?

@@Cenyon it’s been years but I remember enjoying it. Although it’s widely considered weaker than 2 I think. Might have to play through 2 & 3 for another video soon.

To me, the original fable was flawed, but still it was better than fable 2 and 3. Even the 'horrible' combat system is not too bad for the time and it is just slightly worse to fable 2. But fable 2 combat system is bad is its own way, making it it more easy hit, and the camera too far away. To me it is uncomfortable and less challenging. changing my opinion Fable 1 is better overall

It’s a flawed gem for me. My memories are that Fable 2 improved a lot of the issues I had with the game (whilst introducing its own problems and over promises for sure….) That said, replaying Fable did make me keen to pick up Fable 2 and see how the game evolved, so it’s likely I’ll do it sooner or later and I’ll be sure to compare the combat in both
