I watched this done on another channel and they didn't use Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe...so I decided to try it for myself.
I went to the Dollar Tree where they have clear glass full size dinner plates 10 1/2" across, and bought two of them to try this out. Here's a link to them. tinyurl.com/ycy8ohys
I found Mod Podge Dishwasher Safe at Target.com for $3.98 and here's the link to it. tinyurl.com/ya79yjdx
To begin this project, you'll need to wipe your plate with rubbing alcohol to remove any fingerprints/grime. I ran mine through the dishwasher then wiped it with alcohol just to be on the safe side.
You'll need a foam brush, 1/2 yard of the material of your choice, and a good pair of fabric scissors. (I used my Tim Holtz small snips to cut the material once it was on the plate.) the 5" micro snips are my favorite...Here's a link to them. tinyurl.com/yb946teq
After the plate is clean, and before you've removed the seal from the bottle of Mod Podge, lay the bottle on it's side and roll it around on your work surface to mix the Mod Podge. Then you will lay the plate face down on a work surface (I used a Dollar Tree cutting mat for under my project)....Coat the back (underside) of the plate with Mod Podge (dishwasher safe) with a foam brush, trying not to leave any gobs or uneven areas of Mod Podge. Lay the material face down, making sure you've covered the plate on all sides with the material. (I didn't trim my material until after I'd glued it to the plate. )
Once the material is laid in place, coat the material with Mod Podge all the way to the edges of the plate. Make sure you don't have any bubbles underneath, and now's the time to pick up the material and re-adjust it if you have an issue with wrinkles or bubbles.
I waited overnight for the Mod Podge to dry, then trimmed it from the edges of the plate. I used Tim Holtz small 5" scissors, and trimmed to the edge of the plate. I added a second layer of Mod Podge and made sure that I went around and under the edges to ensure they were well adhered... Try to make sure you don't leave any big globs of Mod Podge, and that you've coated the fabric surface so you can see the Mod Podge everywhere.
I cleaned the mat with my homemade stamp cleanser (1 tsp. baby shampoo in spray bottle filled with water), but really, once the Mod Podge has dried, it can basically be pulled off the plastic mat with your fingers.
I added a third coat of Mod Podge the next day to ensure it was going to be well coated.
NOTE: You need to let it cure (don't put it in the dishwasher) for 28 days. That means you can wash the top of the plate, but keep the underside out of water for 28 days so it has time to completely dry and set up.
I wiped the edges of the plate while the Mod Podge was still wet to clean the spots where I got a little crazy with Mod Podge....
I also made a plate using Christmas material. The Christmas material had some thicker areas that were (fake) embroidered) and those sections were difficult to adhere to the plate evenly. I didn't have any problems with the first material I used, but I needed to cut the Christmas material around some of the leaves, so I could lay the material on the plate to ensure the material laid flat.

I’ve made some of these years ago and actually got some decent money for them back in my craft booth days. Love the look of the depth and brightness that the Mod Podge gives the material. You wouldn’t think so until you actually do the project. My plates had different birds on them & the red in the cardinals was gorgeous. Thanks for doing this project.

Crafting For Almost Everyone If they had it back then I wasn’t aware of it. That’s been over 20 years ago so I doubt it existed back then. I just told them up front to either just use them for decoration or just put cookies on them & wipe clean but never immerse in water. Some that were just for hanging on the wall I used white plates & put the material picture on the front. I love your videos BTW!

I make chocolate colored strawberries and pretzels for friends for the holidays, and my girlfriends' birthday was Nov 2, so made a batch for her on the leaf plate. I think it would be great for cookies too, and just think how pretty a Christmas table would be with the glittery plates on it....Even if you used them for serving dishes, as you could cover bowls or anything really.....I left the link for the Mod Podge in case you have any trouble finding it any where besides Target. I went to all of the big craft stores in the city closest to us and none had the dishwasher safe, so I'm not sure if they are discontinuing it or it's just a big seller....

So happy for you..you needed something like that to brighten your day!!! I couldn't find the dishwasher safe MP at any of the big craft stores in my area. All had a slot for it on the shelves, but no MD...that's why I made sure to leave the link....I'm thrilled your Joanns has it, as mine didn't...If you can't find it, try Target, as they'll ship to the US address for free with a $35 order...I just bought toilet paper and paper towels for the rest of the order, haha...always need those.

@craftingforalmosteveryone

I really like to let it dry between coats so waited several hours to overnight between coats. You can wait less, I'm just overly cautious. If you look at it and there's no white left to the glue, it should be safe to do the next coat...

Hi! I’m new to your channel and I have a question regarding these plates. Does the back of the plate become smooth after it cures, or what can I do to take the texture from the of the plate?
@craftingforalmosteveryone
@craftingforalmosteveryone 4 жыл бұрын
Dolores, I'm always happy to answer questions. The back of the plate would become more smooth with more coats of Mod Podge, but I chose to only use two or three coats, and you can still feel the texture of the material (that I liked)...They do use quite a bit of Mod Podge, and if you're going for the smooth feel, it might take a whole container to accomplish that..Best of luck to you with this project...it's simple unless you choose the fabric on the left that has an embroidered design, and then you'll need to cut around some of the embroidery to get it to lay flat....I'd love to see a photo of one you create...Sandy saundralparker@yahoo.com

I didn't try sponging it, but I'll be it would work...I loved it too, and it looks so much prettier in person. If you have a small family, this would make such a pretty Christmas table...you might not want to make plates for 12, but if it's just your immediate family, it would be so nice....and great for gifts. @craftingforalmosteveryone

If you still have the streaks after a couple of days, you might want to paint an additional coat of Mod Podge in the opposite direction of your original streaks. Did you put a big layer of Mod Podge on the plate before laying down the material? And then another layer on top of the material immediately after laying the material down? If you waited between the coats, that probably your problem, but if you try putting a heavy coat over it, that might work. Not sure what else to tell you. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner, but Rich (my husband) had his hip replaced this morning..it turned out great, but unfortunately, I didn't get back to you soon enough... Sorry for the late reply. Did you know you can buy them from Dollar Tree online for delivery...you only have to order 8 of them to have them delivered to your home. The shipping to my house would be 14.99, so each plate would be a little over $3. I'm not sure, but don't think you could find them cheaper unless at a thrift store. If you live near a Crate & Barrel, they have a set of 8 right now for $21.95, so that would make the plates slightly cheaper $2.75 a plate, I didn't check on shipping. Hope I helped you. Sandy
