I was thinking that too! I love that shirt of yours Cathy!! 😘👌🏻 Oooh! You need to find some fabric like your shirt for the binding! 😆 The shirt luck always seems to be in your favor….so you never know 🤷🏻‍♀️ Or I’m sure there’s yardage you could find that’s similar…🤔 anyway just an idea. I know whatever you end up with it will be wonderful!

Thank you for sharing this enriching process. One of my favorite things about quilting is when I let go of a design that is not working. When I put away the fabrics that don’t belong together, or don’t belong in this quilt, I feel rich beyond compare. The fabrics I didn’t use are doubly satisfying and valuable, because they have been saved for another quilt, where they Will Truly Belong . I am grateful for my creativity, my inspiration, and the patience and maturity To Start Over. That is truly satisfying creativity.

I live by the “Finished is better than perfect “ mantra but you made me realize that compromising at the very onset is not the right way to go about quilting. This is way too much labor and expense to cut corners before there is really a need to cut corners. I think you were absolutely on the right track in continuing your search for the right fabric/fabric combination. ❤

I love watching your process of a fabric pull! I enjoy doing it as well. Great job allowing yourself to compromise! As for “imperfections,” I am as careful as I can be, but once I have worked & often reworked a project, I say “this is the best I can do for now” & I enjoy the result! Great video!

Yes, favorite color of the recipient is important and the place to begin...then you can play around with that and its pleasing compliments. Your color pencil drawings are not wasted because each one has its own merit. Some of us love purple and we were cheering for the purple/red choice❤. However you are not making the quilt for us "purple people"...your friend needs a quilt with colors that resonate with her. Any of those color pallets would work in a quilt but the one you chose for your friend will be something she will cherish and in her eyes...nothing could be more beautiful!! ❤ it will be a stunning quilt...guaranteed!

I just made two quilt tops (one queen, and one 70”x79” large lap) with shirts from my uncle who passed away in December. Bless your heart for using shirts for your fabric stash. I don’t think I will ever again use them in a whole quilt. The thicker fabric was not so bad, but there were a couple of shirts that were made of shirting fabric and were very thin and raveled horribly. I’m glad I made them and my aunt will love them, but I am glad I’m on to the quilting portion of them.
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts 3 күн бұрын
Kim, it really depends on the shirt, but the raveling is for REAL! I use a LOT of starch especially with thin shirts, oxford cloth and linen---it makes all the difference in the world! 🤓😘

I love all the phrases you mentioned at the end, especially the galloping horse one. I have a wall hanging over my fireplace that I completed a couple of years ago. It’s not completely square and you can see where the binding came together. Or I should say that I can really see where the binding comes together. It’s so obvious to me. I do my best not to fixate on it. However, as I’m sitting here looking at it again, I’ve decided that it should be a lesson in giving myself grace. Nothing done by hand will ever be perfect, but that’s what makes it special.

We do too much, want too much for perfection at times in the creative process. I needed to hear this truth yet one more time. Your friend is going to love the quilt, looking forward to pictures. I appreciate you taking us through your process. I am going to sort through the boxes of colored pencils from my kids days in school and put them on my cutting table. It’s so interesting to hear about your approach to choosing colors, which is very different from mine, but what’s the same is wanting the juxtaposition of colors to click with each other. So many people are afraid to choose colors. My palette comes from scraps cast off by members of my quilt guild. The pieces tell me how they’re meant to fit together. I never know what the outcome will be at the outset, and that’s the way I like it. Even the “ugly fabrics” have a contribution to make. ❤

My two largest quilts to date were planned with specific fabrics. However, once I truly started to put them together, I realized I no longer liked all the fabrics I had originally chosen. I did use some of them in both quilts, but my “curated” original choices just did not chill. So here I am, with fabric that wasn’t quite right, that I spent money on thinking, I just need to use them anyways, because you know that guilt thing, but then realized, no no no. I will not be happy with the end result and might not even finish those projects. Then truly all that fabric was a waste. So, tweaking, reselecting, finding the right fabrics that made me happy, that cleared up the old guilt and in the end, I did eventually use some of those fabrics in other quilt projects. The journey to the end result was worth it both in how much more satisfied I was and even with additional expense. I think the new choices are so much more fun and really will fit your friend even better. Thanks again for a great video. See you in the funny papers!

Being able to let go of an idea is a very important lesson to learn. I didn't do that in a project rec2and i regret it. I forced a "solution" which has closed the door on the better choice that could have waited and been much better.

I have done this! I think I learned, as I have folded my linen top up until I can get the right linen backing. Even though I want it NOW

I feel your pain. I am having having a problem locking down my color selection on a project. Seems I’ve been working on it for weeks (actually only several several days). I need a colorist. And since that’s out of the question, I am relying heavily on the color wheel. It is helping me to put some structure in my color selection. There may be a chance that I can pin down my blocks and start cutting before the month is over.

I think the problem is the cooler cream makes the warmer cream seem somewhat dingy when they are close together.

Most if my stash is donated fabrics for charity quilting. I enjoy playing with them to put together a colorway, but it's not easy. I'm thinking that maybe i should invest in a color wheel. You make me see things when you show it that my brain alone does not!

When you say all linen, are you including linen/cotton shirts or 100% linen?

I would say predominantly linen, with the occasional linen-cotton blend. 🤓👍🏻

It'll make it so much easier to "join" in on your thought process. Looking forward to seeing this one come together ❤️

I so enjoy your videos and I save them for the end of day on Fridays as a special treat for myself for making it through what are sometimes very challenging weeks. I have been thrifting shirts to use for quilting and started my first one just last week. While thrifting a few weeks ago I picked up a fairly large piece of fabric yardage (4 1/2 yards!) that I’m certain is either linen or cotton. I did the burn test and it completely burns to ash with no melting. Is there a way to tell for certain which it is? It’s a beautiful light oatmeal color and will go with just about anything.

Thank you, Christine! ❤️ That is exciting that you found such a large piece of fabric at the thrift store! 🤩 To my knowledge there's no way to tell if a fabric is linen, cotton, or linen-cotton blend. In my experience linen is a bit rougher and the weave is more obvious; the threads are soft but not smooth and you can see each individual thread really easily. Cotton is smoother and the weave is generally not as obvious. If it's a linen/cotton blend, it's anyone's guess because you get the best of both!!

I wish I could find linen shirts. I’m from Michigan, do you think linen shirts for men is a southern thing?
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts 4 күн бұрын
Susan, I'm sure it is! And probably because it is far hotter here (for longer) and linen breathes so well; I know it is widely worn in the Southern coastal areas as beach/vacation attire.

Happy Friday! My grandmother used to ask if the color combinations were" singing to her". While the first colors may have worked, when you brought out the blue orange and yellow , the whole choir sang AMEN AMEN AMEN. I may have squealed a little bit!😊. This is why the process is so important, and so worth the work. Your friend will love this quilt. Happy quilting!

Hello, I found your videos and love them. I noticed that you use a brother pq1500/1600. I try to quilt with this machine and it constantly cuts the thread too short. Is there a fix for it? I searched your playlist and did not see anything about the machine. Please help
@TheCatBirdQuilts
@TheCatBirdQuilts 2 күн бұрын
It DOES constantly cut the thread too short, and so far my "fix" has been to not use the built-in cutter! 😂 The closest thing I've found to a solution is if I pull the fabric I'm sewing (or quilting) away from the needle JUST as I'm hitting the cutter button, it will pull just enough of the thread to keep it in the needle. It's not really a solution, but if I just have to use the cutter, that's what I do.🤓
