Fabricating a locomotive frame

Today, we're building a locomotive frame for a customer.
I square out up and strap it down to the welding table, tack it, and weld it together.
This is a 2 axle switcher design, based on Bill Gardei's NB-1 locomotive, as described at www.islandpondrailroad.com. A number of things have been changed and improved upon from the original design, most notably the suspension and the motor mount.

Having worked with earlier video cameras that could be permanently damaged by a bright light, I'm always amazed when today's consumer cameras capture arc welding without additional filters.

I wouldn't dare film welding with the Sony tube cameras I used at WNNE back in 1993. The bonus about this camera is that it's fully insured!

great job getting the frame welded, and maintaining square and proper spacing! is very challenging. it is so frustrating when electronics fail! especially new items! great job, good luck getting it all done!

When you're welding try not to move the torch around too much and stop tracking back over the weld you just laid, start at one end of the metal and in slow and steady action move the torch forward and in a straight line. Hope that helps.

wouldn't channel iron be better for the ends?

It will all be covered by the body, so it's about the same.

Hey Aaron, nice video on your new locomotive frame! Will these locomotives you're building for customers have four drivers like the 70 & 71, or will they have two four wheel trucks?
