Have you a roller or English wheel of sorts? You can stop that drum or tin canning in you bead roller parts by pre stretching on the wheel . Try a small roll with a corner with scrap and you will be sold . 👍❤️🇦🇺also thanks for waking my own projects up , as I need to get back on the tools . 😄

All those flat panels make terrific vibration amplifiers. Making your bead rolls different lengths and shapes helps break up resonances and make your car smoother and quieter. If you made all the bead rolls symmetric and identical it would be extremely unpleasant at certain speeds and rpms. Moving the heater to one side will help with that as well, because instead of having panels that resonate at the same frequencies on both sides of the car, the vibration characteristics of the two sides will be completely different and won't reinforce each other.
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Жыл бұрын
It also helps that we've used different thicknesses throughout the car and that the panels are small but you are correct with such a stiff chassis resonant frequency can be a real concern

Considering the temperatures this summer and the predictions that climate changes will likely lead to hotter envires, you might want to figure out an alternative way to run 'chilled' water through that 'heater' core as well.

I've lived in some extremely hot places and when it comes to cabin cooling it's as much about getting the hot air out the cabin as it is drawing cool car in

The car is looking great! Some clear progress in this video. But I believe the oil canning effect you’re seeing after bead rolling the panels can be improved upon. The floppyness will mostly disappear once everything is welded and fastened together. But. Have you heard of pre stretching the panels before bead rolling? I’ve seen others lay out where their bead rolling will be. And they pre-stretch the material, causing it to look like a potato chip. And when they roll their beads in. They take up that stretched material and the panel is much flatter when done. Making the final fitting easier. And less stress is left in the panel once installed. Lazze metal shaping on KZfaq has a very good video demonstrating this. He does use an english wheel to do the pre-stretching operation. But I was thinking, with the right dies in the bead roller. You may be able to get a similar effect.

@@OliverPickard well of course you did. Isn’t that always the way it goes? Lol. To be honest. I’m trying to get someone else to try the bead roller stretching idea for me. As I don’t want to buy an english wheel. And I’m not at the point on my project to make panels.
@stephengent9974

The metal needs to be pre-stretched before bead rolling. Most people use an English wheel, which you do not have. Interesting watch your thought processes for this build. It is worth showing what actually goes into a build. The devil is always in the detail. Fit and finish need to be spot on, otherwise it will look crap.
@OliverPickard

A few people gave me tips on pre-stretching last week but we'd already made the panels so it's definitely something to try in the future
@shaunsheep8252
@shaunsheep8252 Жыл бұрын
You can pre stretch with a bead roller too, mark out your panel on both sides. Then slightly bead roll the back of the panel. Turn it over and then bead roll the side you want too. It works, I used to do it that way before I got my English wheel With the ‘X’ cross in the panel, use a soft lower wheel (like scoreboard wheel) that way you get the bead where it crosses without deforming

I do like that beed roller it does stiffen panels up nicely. My concern is those thin panels are going to warp when you weld them all together.

Would it be better to make right foot well panel flat without that bend? You would loose little space in foot well but the serviceability of heater matrix would greatly improve. It would help to see the foot well space from the point of view of a passenger to actually determine that. Regardless of that you guys are making excellent job building your dream car.

When describing the hole sizes, did you actually mean radius or diameter ? Also, now that you have moved the heater box, can you still get the third point fixing direct from the tunnel or will you need a bracket ?
@OliverPickard
@OliverPickard Жыл бұрын
when ever I talk about hole sizes on video its always diameter. im not sure what you mean by third point fixing but it does complicate the mounting from the knee bar to the front bulkhead, it just needs to be bigger
@georgeclements2742
@georgeclements2742 Жыл бұрын
@@OliverPickard Thanks Oliver. I only asked about the hole sizes because you said radius in the video and the hole saws on the bench looked diameter sized. Perhaps I used the wrong term when I was talking a out the third fixing for the heater box, but in the earlier video when you had the heater placed centrally you showed how you could simply add a bolt and nut to stop the heater box from vibrating. As usual, I'm sure that all will become clear in due course. Best wishes.
