Welcome to Tick Creek Ranch. This channel
was created to show the daily ins and outs of
life on a small ranch. We are a family of eight,
our lifestyle has taken us from the deserts of
Idaho to the wilds of Alaska and back to the
lower 48. We followed our dreams and finally
settled in the Ozark's of Missouri. We have
owned and operated our own businesses. over
the years, ranging from carpentry and
excavation to commercial and residential landscape. The children and ourselves have
developed a passion for learning new skills
which include leather work, welding and
fabricating, carpentry, plumbing, electrical,
roofing, painting, equipment operation, timber
sawing, blacksmithing, horseshoeing, flatwork
and concrete, timber framing, cattle ranching,
horse training, and many more. Please follow
along on this journey as we build our new
home and delve into the ways of regenerative
ranching. So stick around and watch us create
our dream using old world construction
techniques and style reminiscent of an era
gone by. Thank you and enjoy the journey.

On the subject of Bracing, engineers and builders tend to have two schools of opinion! Damned if you do! And Damned if you don't! I always go with that Damned If I Don't! That rule means you over build with a tendency to expect a 200 year storm to come knocking during your lifetime Or worse during your children's lifetime when they inherit the structure. You just keep on doing it your way and know that some old timber framer's are watching and approving. It makes us old guys very happy to know the skill and art of Timber Framing is still alive in the younger generation.

No such thing as overkill imho. Someday I might build a traditional mortise and tenon timber frame, but this is taking long enough for now.

The way you fit the massive bracket to the beam is RAD!

I started working at 16 yrs old as an apprentice for a Timber Farmer who was 60 yrs old, he started his apprenticeship as a bridge builder for the railroad back when bridges were built out of heavy wood beams. He taught me geometry, carpentry timber farming, blacksmithing, welding and how to cuss like a railroad worker! I still use all of the skills he taught me, your right about the hanger brackets, My motto is the same Just Do It! On the drilling of bolt holes in the metal brackets, If I might make a suggestion, get a used commercial magnetic lock down drill press, mount a steel plate flush on the work bench and Drill Baby Drill! I have seen big dudes shatter their wrist when the high torque drill hangs a bit in the hole breakout and wraps the wrist up like a noodle. You can get the used mag lock drills used from pawn shops cheap, it's a lot cheaper than surgery and six months of down time! Just a suggestion from a 62 yr old Timber Farmer and avid fabricator.

Cussing and construction go hand in hand don’t they lol. Yes sir, Mag drills are nice. I use my clutch to prevent injuries, but it’s a poor replacement for a mag drill. I’ve been meaning for years to get a mag drill. Time for some pawn shop hopping. 👍 Thanks, Ben

A Mag Drill is one tool I've never seen in any pawn shop or 2nd hand store, never mind a cheap one.

Having the saddle of the strap recessed is much cleaner look, as a matter of fact if I were still fabricating & welding, I'd mention that for any exposed beam construction I may be called upon for hangers. Recess all 3 points of contact w/the strap on the beam.
