Someone’s pointed out that the photos of Mr Preda aren’t even from the same video. So it’s really not a fair comparison either way! Also, the more I see the slowed down footage of Dr Mike pulling the toothbrush away from his face, the more it looks filtered. When he pulls the toothbrush away, not only do his fine lines disappear, but a smoothing filter snaps on under eyes

Dr. Mike, so disappointing. I mean I knew he had has his scrubs tailored to almost skin tight, but shit, that hair, it was sticking a bad rug on a bald man. This series is so good for me. I didn’t know people used filters so much. I have a group chat with good friends and we send silly selfies and I always wondered why my skin always looked so bad in comparison. I asked what skin care they used and 2 of them were like “girl it’s the filter, you’ve seen me IRL you know I don’t look like this” and that’s true. I let the filter thing override my common sense 😂😂 and it was effecting how I felt about myself

I have a friend who also didn't know that even face filters existed that she believed everything she saw online. So, I think it's important to educate people, like what James is doing, that they know to not compare themselves to the unattainable perfectionism they see online. Even for those of us who know about it is easy to forget sometimes.

Haha wait till you see my skin. 😂 Just a friendly reminder that you can have imperfect/impaired skin at ANY age. I’m kind of tired of people focusing on age. I’m in my early twenties but my skin is shit and has never been clear for 10 years since I got my period. I have eye wrinkles and deep nasolabial folds, etc. that are typically categorized as “mature” skin. It has never looked “young” or like a “20 year-old’s perfect skin”. My grand aunts, however, have clear plump skin. 🙃

I got my degree in photographic science so I have kind of a weird relationship with retouching. In a lot of scientific applications it’s not unacceptable to do any local adjustments as it affects the data. I do love retouching and image restoration though and my general rule for portrait retouch is I’ll make you look as good as you could naturally. If there’s a weird shadow, a hair in your face, a mascara smudge, I’ll get rid of it. Even minor blemish correction because that isn’t how you look all the time. I think retouching should be about enhancement, not alteration. (And sponsored posts or product promotion is a whole other story)

Another thing to remember is that not everyone can “see” 4K. Have you ever looked at a television and what was playing looked like a sitcom even if it wasn’t? That’s what happens when the resolution (I’m using this as a “catch all” term) keeps getting higher and higher. Not all eyes are capable of seeing this higher resolution on screen, so it begins to look fake and kind of “sitcom-y”. I don’t have the background in imagery like James does, but I do have background in televisions, monitors, and screens in general. And not everyone can see these insanely high resolution images/videos as anything other than fake looking. You usually can’t put your finger on what’s “wrong” with what you’re seeing, but it absolutely looks fake in some way. It can be because of eyesight issues, but that isn’t always the case. Some people just can’t get past that “uncanny valley” look that comes with extremely high resolution. Edit: Cell phone screens are now being released with OLED screens. So, even your cell phone can look too HD as well!

I love that you don’t just have a filmed into when you say that skincare is progression over perfection. Because you actually say it at the beginning of every video it really drives home this point. You’re right that there is huge societal pressure on women to have good skin and to wear makeup. It’s so hard for me to just go through the basics of life (I’m dealing with my mental health; it’s slowly getting better) that I don’t have the energy to have a skincare or makeup routine at the moment. It’s affected my raise at my job.
@dees3179

Hope things improve for you soon. I work in heritage. I don’t wear makeup at work. Pretty much none of my colleagues do either. The requirements are basically that you are clean, (as in don’t smell, we get dirty at work) and dressed appropriately for the days tasks, hair brushed if you have some and tied back if you are doing something practical . Even in public facing rolls. Possibly some choose to wear a bit of mascara or lipgloss, but it’s genuinely rare to see someone doing more than foundation or concealer, and even then, that’s not common it’self. Perhaps the problem is not you, not all industries are the same. If you want to wear makeup for your self, it’s a shame you’re not able to do so right now, but do think (when you have mental space) about if there is something you can transfer into that actually doesn’t require it. At the very least think about if there is one thing you can do that will make you feel and therefore act like you are more put together. Perhaps that is a good moisturiser or lip balm, and just try to find the energy for that daily.

Absolutely agree! Ageing is mostly genetics. Everyone tells me how young I look ( I’m 59) but I don’t really eat well, excercise only 1-2 times a week and have only in the last year or two started really looking after my skin. I’m just lucky… and grateful 😄

My mother is 64 and I don't know HOW but she has barely any wrinkles. Only wrinkles she has are around her mouth (used to smoke) but no crows feet and no forehead wrinkles. She also has a lot of freckles from sun. Thats it. How!? I kinda hope I have her aging genetics but we'll see when I'm over 40.

Yes! My mom is 60 and has always looked quite young for her age (at least compared to my colleagues and friends' parents), and has done a bit of skincare here and there but nothing specific. She eats ok, doesn't exercise much, doesn't sleep much, and has always been stressed. I think the issue is that people expect the "worst" for certain ages. So, typically folks who've smoked or dealt with alcohol abuse. They don't think of the typical 60. Though it's a whole weird thing with Botox and fillers now.

When even people like Dr. Mike feel the need to filter their skin, we see that there is a massive problem with insecurities on social media. His skin is basically perfect. 🤨 His skin moves when he talks. Wrinkles appear, when he emotes. SKIN DOES THAT. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It's soooo trashy to give anti-aging tips while filtered, IMO. 😒 Here's my anti-aging tip: 80-90% of what we attribute to "aging" is actually just sun damage. WEAR SPF ERRYDAY. Or my super exclusive secret version: become depressed so you keep your blinds closed and only want to go out at night, and the sun can't get you. It works! I'm almost 36, but my skin still looks like it did in my mid 20s. Is it worth it? Helllllllllll no. ...Put on your sunscreen and go live your life. ✌🏻

I’m not sure about this. So many young people are growing up filtering their photos that it’s making them look negatively at their face and skin. If you get used to seeing your face smooth and “corrected,” of course you’re going to not like the real version. It’s one thing to do it once in a while. But always correcting photos, I think it’s harmful and it’s okay to call it out.

I think it's about balance, general colour and lighting adjustments and patching blemishes aren't that concerning because those factors vary in real life anyway. I do struggle with filters that blur all the texture from the face and change the structure, because those are what make a photo unrealistic and lead to comparisons and feelings of disappointment in real life. I used to filter photos of myself, but it made me feel worse about how I looked in the mirror and photos from friends, family, and other photographers that weren't filtered to the point that I wouldn't show them to anyone.

I think when people do anti-aging videos based upon their individual experience it's disingenuous. She's not doing anything that hasn't already been recommended by dermatologists for decades now. And even if the filter only helps a little bit, it's obvious there's a genetic component she doesn't bother to mention. It just reminds me of the articles in beauty magazines from when I was growing up that were like "See what Cindy Crawford does to look beautiful in the morning!" and they conspiciously leave out Step Number One: wake up looking like Cindy ***ing Crawford. I'm thankful for content like this and hope teens and younger women can realize there's nothing wrong with them for having freckles, pores, little lines, etc. The misery I put myself through as a young women in the 80's was ridiculous, trying to look like perfect women who didn't even exist in the wild.

As a person working on editing I just want to add that camera sometimes doesn’t show the real color/proportion. Oh lord. I used to do some retouching as a side business many many years ago. It is an absolute art to make flawless textured skin. Some projects I worked on required me to almost completely "paint" over the skin, then add skin texture back in to make it look "real". Sometimes I'd get a request to take a pic and completely change the makeup from what was done and so there was almost nothing real left.

@@lorimoore5589 true, sadly many young women are aging in their early 20s from sun damage, so I think thats why suddenly looking normal at 30 is suddenly younger looking than expected

@@royalgrimoire yeah I guess. I just know that I worshipped the sun starting in my teen year's an at 22 I used a tanning bed 6 days a week. I even took a extra job at the tanning salon so I could not only tan for free but could exceed the 30 mins by turning it back on because after we closed I was only one there. And after I stopped working there I stilled tanned into my 40's an aging never even occurred to me. I think the first time I started seeing things on skin when I looked in the mirror that were concerning but nothing I was insecure about was 40. I would say 45 was when I was starting to look a see things that really bothered me but at 50 I feel like I started to age 5 yrs for every year. I believe that the damage we do when we are young doesn't show till many years later. If it had I might have stopped but i looked so much better tan that it seemed like a good thing. But boy am I paying the price now. Just like our diets an smoking. My grandmother smoked since she was 13 but she had no health problems until she was 40 but died of emphysema at 79. These days there are so many great self tanning products being in the sun isn't necessary but we won't know the long term effects of those for years to come. Maybe the Amish are onto something 😂

can you please do a comparison video between 'isntree green tea fresh toner', 'purito unscented Centella toner', 'isntree aloe soothing toner', and other similar soothing toners?

I totally agree with the photoshop and retouching. I use to fill I needed to retouch all my images before posting them to social media. However I’ve just been posting unfiltered photos and I feel so much better with my actual skin texture showing. Social media can really be damaging to your mental health.

Not sure if it’s stilll up but Kylie cosmetics posted a pic for her “gold” collection and the filter was glitching. Not only her lips, her eyes etc

I did notice how different Mr Preda looked in the thumbnail compared to the video. I certainly don’t expect anyone to look the same as their best angle and lighting, but the difference was so big even someone like me who’s kind of inexperienced with filters and editing noticed something was off. I certainly don’t think he did anything wrong as he wasn’t selling skincare as you said, but I am glad I wasn’t going crazy and other people noticed too!

I'm 31 and here's my tip to have people tell me i look younger than my age: pure luck of genes. like i don't have amazing skin because i have rosacea but i don't have wrinkles and i can't say i'm a model of healthy lifestyle and perfect skincare routine, i'm just lucky enough to look a bit childlike and therefore people compliment me on looking younger ^^'
