Its not a secret. all master craftsmen can form things the way they want. What I like about the Chinese carpentry is there ability to make secret combination compartments. I really like the Japanese wood jointer styles.

I guess it was a "secret" for so long because it was too lame for anyone to care. Most carpenters can build something simple like this.

it's ok, but two related problems jump out. 1. a square shaft will not center itself in a three-jaw drill chuck. 2) before installing sandpaper how about truing the wood drum

Chinese have kept this “secret” because it’s a crude execution of a makeshift solution. I’ll grant that this may be meant as a quick demo of the idea, but the execution is so poor that it doesn’t prove the concept. It's a heap of rough, unfinished parts clapped together into a rickety imitation of a bench sander. The mandrel is especially gross, machined (being generous) to be almost deliberately off-center. The result isn’t so much kept secret as not worth mentioning.
