A huge narrative we hear in climbing goes a little like this:
a. person struggles
b. person overcomes fears
c. person sends the climb
It's cool. We love that. But I feel like a huge story is being left out of the picture, the one of people taking steps, however small, to overcome their oh-so-relatable mental roadblocks. I'm not pushing the frontier of climbing grades, I'm not climbing some uncharted face in a remote and distant land... it's just your every day struggle of being a weirdo who decided it was a good idea to dangle from a thin rope hundreds of feet up on a cliffside... only to remember that falling is an intrinsic fear that takes time, effort, and mental strength to combat.
I haven't been doing it since I was a wee child, I'm NOT used to falling at ALL on rope (despite having fallen a few dozen times!), and have yet to be confident on lead. The fear is heightened when it's a tough grade for me (note: IMO this climb is sandbagged as sh!t), and more so when it's a runout, exposed slab in jtree that only has 3 bolts (we learned this later: only those bolts, then mantle over the lip and solo to the top, no anchor bolts either).
I'm proud of agreeing to try it. And then, against the will of the screaming voice in my head saying DON'T DO IT DON'T DO IT, I kept tying my knot, putting my shoes on one by one, and traversing slowly but surely to the right until I reached the next hold, the next bolt, etc.
And that's the whole story. No send in sight, but I came off that wall absolutely beaming.
yeeeeeeeesssss!

i know this is an older video but it feels so refreshing and reassuring to see you scared on a climb... I recently led my first route which was a 5.8 but I was so insanely scared and felt embarrassed alongside my climbing friends. I couldn't help but cry afterwards reliving that fear. Thank you for always showing your vulnerable side!!! It's so easy to think that great climbers like you don't get scared and are so brave, but we're all still human.

i totally understand getting shit scared from falling especially when the bolt is clear out to the side and below you. I've gotten better at climbing past the bolt when its inline with my body but the pendulum falls are still so scary (time for me to go back to the gym and practice those type of falls with my belay partner). great effort though!!! love seeing fellow strong badass women trying real hard!! keep crushin!

That's such a beautiful line, and a worthy adversary for sure. Bachar was no pushover. You're following in the footsteps (soles?) of giants, keep it up!

I think in climbing it will always exist the fear of falling, sometimes that fear overcomes us and makes us think that the crux is too much for us or some negative ideas like that, I think that´s totally normal and that's part of climbing. But the real crux is overcoming those fears because that's what makes so wonderful the lead climbing. Climbing without fear would get to a point to be boring. I know you will top that rout and you will overcome that fear, I would like to see that in a video of how you do it. I love your videos and your good vibe. Eres grande Anna!

Yeah! It’s totally a mental game when it comes to climbing outdoors (I mean, indoors too!) but it’s also why it’s so amazing and addictive and everything I ever want to do haha 😂 amazing insight, gracias :)

Hey Anna! Gabby again, I'm still planning on starting from the beginning of your videos but I couldn't resist watching this new vid! What a great decision that was! :) I think a great deal of us have all been there Anna on one day or another. It is so brave of you to show your viewers these hard and frustrating moments, to remind us that we are not alone in these fears while climbing. Watching this and seeing how ready you were to complete this climb, but doubting some of your abilities reminded me of a very similar experience I had on a route a few months ago. I didn't send, but I did end up in tears by the time I was lowered to the ground. Much like you, after tears were dried, I gained a lot of clarity about what mental roadblocks I previously didn't know I had and what I could do better next time to continue to overcome them. Keep crushing!

Hi Gabby! Again! Awww so kind of you to leave this message 😍 getting through mental roadblocks is just as big a part of the game of climbing as physical roadblocks (if not more!) so I’ve found it super natural to let the cameras roll when I’m fighting through it. I don’t think people do it enough, and I’m here to show the whole side of climbing, not just the positives! It’s such a relatable fear too-I feel like we grow most in moments like this. Keep crushing it out there and I’m just so happy you’re enjoying my content omg

Thanks for sharing this - I think it's important to remember (particularly when binging through big impressive KZfaq climbs) that not every day can or will end with a send and that that doesn't make it a "failure." There's still lots of enjoyment to be had, a lot learnt (sometimes more than sending), and pushing outside your comfort zone is a challenging and, hopefully, rewarding experience that takes time.

This must before you met the @wideboyz. Tell Pete to add "jamming" by Bob Marley to one of his videos if he can lol. I think they have never thought of that, it's an original thought haha.

Looked just fine to me. A quick draw and then an alpine? To be fair I dont care much about gate direction unless the bolts are weird (glue ins)
@AnnaHazelnutt
@AnnaHazelnutt 3 жыл бұрын
I think I was supposed to have the gates facing the opposite way I’m traversing because if the rope catches weird, they could potentially unclip? I totally didn’t notice at the time but it’s such a good thing to note and remember for next time! I was probably too scared to think straight haha
@leoingson
@leoingson 3 жыл бұрын
@@AnnaHazelnutt Yep, gate direction (sorry for my English). I have seen them unclip several times, it actually happens. For hard/dangerous parts of the route, I prefer screw gate quick draws.
