I would say pride mostly. I grew up being known for remembering odd facts and details, so remembering things over having to look them up is part of my self identity. For me, having to turn to the internet for things I should know (like the actors who played Kirk and Spock from the original Star Trek series) has been super frustrating. But, sadly, it's happening a lot more than I feel it should over the last decade. Then again, this could be "the Google Effect", it could be I've always been this way and just now noticing it, it could be some mental disease (like the many forms of dementia), or it could be simple aging. (Although, I wouldn't expect this last one as I'm only getting close to 50, and this usually show up later in life.) At least my spatial memory hasn't felt like it's getting worse. At least I'm willing to fact check myself. ;)

Interesting. Having worked in aviation as a technician I've learned there are two types of technicians. Those that use reference material, such as technical publications, and the ones that go off memory. Going off memory tends to lead to problems as references can be updated and changed.

Yup, noticed that too. Once I got a wrong idea about something in my head it takes me way more effort to invalidate that memory and replace it with a correct one, or even simply extend it with a note that says "but later you learned this is incorrect and the truth is in fact ...", than it took me to form it in the first place.

I remember watching that video a few years ago when I had first subscribed to you, but I had a hard time understanding the information. Now that I'm watching it again, I now realize that I don't understand the connection between the plane pilot failing basic training and "technology is making us forget things". That lack of connection is even more prevalent in my mind when you said in this video that the pilot didn't forget his basic training because he had never got it.

But I also think it's cool how we can see how far you've come. We all improve with practice. And as we progress with new tasks, we work out things we like and don't like. Things that work, and things that don't. That's not to say it's not a good video. I liked it. Especially as far as first KZfaq videos go, it's a pretty good one!

I think a good place to look to understand this topic is history. How did writing change the way our species learns, thinks, and remembers? Scribes making records and accounting more reliable? The printing press making production of higher quality published material available? The industrial revolution making books, magazines, and newspapers cheaper and readily available to the masses? The public library systems making such materials available freely?

There are never enough jokes, so please do make them. I am firmly convinced that people will remember something more readily when they've had a laugh, a positive learning experience. As a teacher, I make sure to give funny example sentences, make silly jokes about the subject matter and generally entertain, so pupils will want to listen and won't feel it's a chore. Puns might be groaners, but they're still effective.

The fact-checker was correct. Unconscious actions/memory are automatic. Subconscious means you're completely unaware of the thought. So you could use the unconscious to ride a bike, by thinking I want to ride the bike, without thinking of all of the muscles and balance corrections needed to do that action... if you used the subconscious, which I think is probably not possible, you'd be unaware of riding the bike!

Your videos have come a long way! :) Even the old paper cutouts are cute though! I know the air crash wasn't the point of your video, but since you're fact checking: Based on your description of the accident, there is a good chance the pilot did not "forget" his training--at least not in the way you suggest. From your description, I would say that there is a reasonable possibility the pilot pulled back on the stick because of what is known as a "somatogravic illusion". I can't say for sure without reading the crash report, but vestibular illusions are a common cause of accidents. Basically, your inner ear can't tell the difference between certain types of accelerations and pitch cues. In the wrong circumstances, pilots can become spatially disoriented and cause a crash. It's still a training issue, but it's more about trusting the training than it is about remembering it. A similar illusion happens when pilots are learning to take off from an aircraft carrier. The strong acceleration causes the pilot to feel like the nose of the plane is pitched up, so the pilot pushes on the stick to "level" the aircraft. The problem is the aircraft was already level, and now the plane is nose down. Ooops. Pilots are trained to recognize when these types of illusions occur and how to compensate, but it can be really, really difficult when your body is telling you one thing and your training another. Most of us want to trust our bodies. When a pilot is tired or frightened, it can be even more difficult to ignore what their body is telling them and trust the instruments instead. It's not an excuse, but it's a more common cause of accidents than people realize--especially among small aircraft. Again, I can't say for sure that's what happened in this instance without reading the crash report, but your description makes it sound awfully plausible. If it was a vestibular illusion, then it's not likely the pilot forgot his training so much as failed to trust his training over the signals he was getting from his own body. Incidentally, the psychology of disorientation would probably be a really fun video! :) There are so many things in this modern world that trip us up just because our bodies weren't designed for it. Even when we know the answer cognitively, it's hard not to be overwhelmed by our instincts.

I think there is a dilemma in science communication. "It's complicated"is often more accurate, but (relatively) simple explanations reach more people. Managing to express the two together is a skill on its own and the irony is that even if one can do that, many viewers will walk away with the simple explanation rather than the understanding that the issue is more complicated.

I indeed don't think that, if, the effect is real, it matters. In that sense I simply lack a good memory unfortunately, but I make up for that in ways to get good at something else. In this case computers and finding of information. I notice I actually know more things than someone who doesn't do that, but for shorter periods of time. :) Also; we simply don't understand the brain well enough to make good science of it, some of it for sure, but when we get into the complex things... I don't think so. This unfortunately results in a lot of studies that may be right, but as equally can be wrong yet schools and others take those studies and run with it to apply to a lot of people. I'm noticing this IRL with my studies on gifted children, it's a pretty sad story unfortunately.

Regarding more parts of the brain being active while on the internet possibly this is a sign that you are more distracted and the quality of learning could actually be worse as a result.

Cool dress, Vanessa! Is that a dress? Anyway, I think the original still holds well, at least for its sheer cuteness!

Hmm, but if you say 'parahippocampal gyrus', the context makes it clear that its 'another area of your memory center in your brain', while simultaneously giving me something to (I guess, appropriately) Google for far more detail. So Im not really sure about the benefit of dumbing it down for us.
