In this video I show you the Factor 55 ProLink and Splicer. What they are, how they differ, and how to attach them to your winch line. I also cover Closed System Winching. Let me know if you have any questions.
The Factor 55 Splicer:
The world’s first splice on synthetic rope shackle mounting thimble with rope protection and integrated rubber pad.
The unique machined rope passage provides a tough outer barrier to protect against rope impact and abrasion as well as UV exposure protection. Compatible with synthetic ropes up to 1/2″ in diameter.
The Factor 55 ProLink:
Replace conventional winch hooks with the new safer, stronger, and smarter Factor 55 ProLink shackle mount.
Factor 55 introduces the new ProLink shackle mount for winch cables and synthetic ropes. Engineered and machined in the USA from lightweight billet 6061 aluminum, the ProLink provides a safe means to easily attach a standard 3/4″ screw pin shackle to existing winch cable and rope eyes The cable or rope eye is captured into the body of the ProLink by a removable oversized 5/8″ double shear pin. The front of the ProLink provides the precision shackle mounting hole and massive 1.2″ thick mounting tab. The ProLink is compatible with both Hawse and Roller fairleads and snugs neatly against both versions.
The advantages of winching with a screw pin shackle over a conventional winch hook are many:
Screw pin shackles are up to 5X stronger than conventional winch hooks
Conventional hooks are too small to safely fit both ends of a recovery strap
Recover straps cannot slip out of a shackle like they can with hooks
Hook safety latches are not rated for loads and can tear recovery straps
Conventional hook surfaces add higher stresses to recovery strap fibers, resulting in decreased strap ratings
Shackles can be quickly removed and stowed away until needed for winching.
Hooks do not cinch neatly against fairleads and are prone to rattling and loosening
Conventional winch hooks are designed for chains - not commonly used recovery straps
Engineered, Tested, and Made in USA - Patent Pending
Stress analyzed using COSMOS FEA and destructively tested for confirmation
Billet construction - precision machined from 6061-T6 Kaiser Aluminum round bar
16,000 pound max load rating
Fits all steel cables and synthetic ropes up to 3/8″ in diameter
Fits eyes equipped with standard or tube thimbles to 3/8 inch diameters
1.2 inch shackle tab thickness virtually eliminates “shackle rattle”
5/8 inch diameter 6Al-4V titanium double shear pin
Optional EPDM “Rubber Guard” protects alloy Hawse fairleads - rubber barb attachment
Can be installed and removed in minutes - simple snap ring removal
Cinches neatly against all types of fairleads - Hawse or Roller
Beautifully anodized and zinc plated in the USA

Side note: when screwing the pin back into a shackle, it’s a good (great) practice to screw it all the way in, and then back it off about 1/4-1/2 turn. You’d be amazed how quickly shackles seize at the most in opportune times! Source: Former Chief Engineer on a Coast Guard buoy tender. And as a side note, love your videos, brother!

Very nice video and components. I have never had a problem with anything falling out of my hook. The safety link always works to keep the hook closed and if the situation arises that pressure is off the hook and then back on, it is easy to check that the weight is not on the safety closure. Never had a hook fail.

I just came across your video. I purchased a factor 55 a couple of years ago. I'm always about safety and using the best products either for personnel use or work. I also purchased the "shorty" which is a figure eight link up between the factor 55 and the load D-ring. Closed loop is definitely the way to go. As a retired safety officer I've always been Pro-active not Re-active. Why would anyone want to continue using a hook that may/can fail when the factor 55 will not!

your right wheelitzr2 if its a USA made hook, but I've had problems with the safety clasp on them, cable, shackle or strap coming out of them for there easily get damaged, bent or just falling out. I have been using a winch for 37 years at work pulling stuck heavy equipment out, and for safety issues because of the safety clasp failing, I think this is a great product.

When I first saw the Prolink I thought it was cool but at well over $100 that interest went away quickly. Personally I just use the "D" ring with the hook. Looking up the Splicer Prolink I see the price is about $75, still pricey but getting down in the range of worth it to me, unfortunately I've not jumped on the synthetic bandwagon. Was thinking the same thing. The Splicer seems like a good idea, as it’s essentially an over built thimble and thimble crushing is a failure point on synthetic rope, but the Pro link seems redundant to me, I see no advantage over just using a ring shackle through the rope thimble. Is it just providing protection to the rope working end during daily driving?

The best and safest way to connect your winch line to a tree saver or other anchor is to simply pass a SOFT shackle through the thimble on the end of your winch line/rope(not the hook, the actual thimble the cable/rope is wrapped around) and then through both ends of the strap.
@irish-simon
@irish-simon 7 жыл бұрын
looks lovely but not convinced mine like your jeep has a problem using the fist one if you are using a snatch block back to your jeep you will need to use a second shackle to attach to the recovery points on the bumper as it wont fit through the and I would be adding one more weak point the second one is lovely but splicing steel wire rope is not easy
@PersonaN007Grata
@PersonaN007Grata 5 жыл бұрын
Couldn't you just put a shackle directly on the eyelet of a steel cable without the use of a open design clevis hook? Is it because the uneven load on the shackle pin can cause it to bend? Generally, the pins are even thicker diameter than the shackle itself.

Maybe I'm old fashioned? ... But I REALLY MUCH prefer a wire rope cable, Flemish Eye Splice and one or two U-Bolts (not for over head lifting!) but for winching and recovery? .. works great and cheap as dirt, NEVER had one fail.

Ive seen an amputation because of wire rope, and yes, synthetic can do some damage but nowhere close to wire rope. Free flying shackles and hooks can do some serious damage as well. Ive seen guys carry 5kg plate weights that they attach to shackles and hooks to stop them from flying off. I carry a few 1t slings of different lenght that i loosely anchor shackles and hooks with, saves a bit of weight compared to plate weights. As long as youre safe around the equipment youre using, know what youre doing and dont get complacent because youve done it before, there shouldnt be an issue

@MikeBaxterABC

A 7/8" shackle is WAY over kill just NOT needed ... the 3/4" is rated at 9500 pounds for overhead lifting ... in a winching application its good for 25,000 pounds easy ... breaking strength is rated at 47,000 pounds for a 3/4" Shackle ... but actual destructive testing shows the breaking strength is actually well over 70,000 pounds.

If your stuck on a Lift or a Recovery and the only choice is to side load a (proper screw in) shackle there's nothing wrong with that at all (check with your shackle manufactures web site) as long as you realize that the LOAD capacity is reduced by 50% for a 90 Degree side load or 30% reduction for a 45 Degree side load. I've lifted equipment and parts that the ONLY method available (as designed by the manufacturer) is to lift them with side loaded shackles ... it's a common procedure in industry.

I don't think that they are a waste of money because if something goes wrong with the hook being put in an odd position by someone inexperienced or that is simply not close enough to see something wrong like in a long desert pull strange things can happen. These eliminate the already minuscule chance of a hook going flying.
@wheelitzr2

bannablitz247 1st I wouldn't let ANYBODY not experienced run my equipment. 2nd if your using your winch to tow somebody across the desert then you obviously have no reason being there because you shouldn't be towing a vehicle with a winch line, there are all kinds of reasons that's a bad idea, a TOW strap and shackle should be used.

Most thimbles are designed to collapse under hard pulls. When this happens trying to run a standard 3/4 shackle pin through the end of your winch line is impossible. Additionally, The integrated EPDM rubber boot allows the ProLink or Splicer to be snugged tightly to your Fairlead preventing rattles and protecting your Fairlead from a metal to metal connection. Not sure what you would do with just the eye....

How come you didn't show the difference between the two links. Yes you showed how the rope connect. However you didn't show the differences between the links. The pro link ONLY accepts a shackle where the flat link or the splicer will accept a "hook" from your buddy's winch or with a shackle. Very valuable information to your viewers. The video should be named rope attachments to winches. I have the factor 55 flat link just saying. Know your products and watch your titles plz. Keep the rubber side down👍🏻

The ProLink would be nice, but I can buy ten regular hooks at any hardware store in the world for the price of the ProLink! They must think that titanium pin, rubber coating, and anodizing is pretty special. Sell them for $50 and then people would probably buy them. $100+ is total price gouging for profit margins! And by the way, I've had many hooks get the safety latch bent sideways and still never slipped off the shackle. Yes, it sucks when the latch gets bent, but again, just a trip to the hardware store and $10 to get a new one. Just saying.

I have a Bubba Rope for the record... and you don't winch with them. They are kinetic ropes.

they make a winch line for the record. with a soft shackle. www.4wd.com/p/bubba-rope-synthetic-winch-line-green-176756x100/_/R-FRSX-176756X100?emlprox=out&ppcfon=1&gp=1&tf=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw3v3YBRCOARIsAPkLbK60Ens6vqalqD6kZdPergEZ0nfiEC67nUt_w1vq50QX3Qucq7YnTeAaAra-EALw_wcB

For the record, I also have their winch line... and I wouldn't run it without a thimble. Soft shackle, Yes. I only use their Gator Jaws unless I absolutely have to use a d-ring...but I still use a thimble. I apologize... usually when people use the term "Bubba Rope" they are referring to the kinetic rope... since that is the name of their original product: "Bubba Rope® is the Original Power Stretch™ off-road recovery rope."

Yeah, definitely ditch your winch cable hook, and ditch your steel cable for synthetic rope. That way you're not actually capable of doing any real work. Seriously, coming from a guy that puts food on his family's table with this type of equipment, show me one rig that's old and beaten up from days weeks months and years of work that has all of this fancy new crap on it. I'm not saying that all the new fancy crap doesn't have its place, but it definitely does not have its place, the majority of it with folks that actually use this type of gear on a daily basis.

I honestly don't know why you would NEED this but Smittybilt has them for $60.......

Ive got a SB winch. Works good so far, but cheaply constructed. Chinese metals, vs USA is actually a thing to consider on safety equipment. I won't buy Smittybuilt products in the future due to cheapo materials.

Why not skip the 55 and just use a D ring since you are using one anyway.
