Simple primer on train signals : You need chain signals at the entrances and regular signals at the exits to every intersection. You can use additional signals in between intersections to break things up and allow more trains to use the same piece of track. Signals go on the right side of the track from the direction of travel they're controlling. That's enough to get you started.
@ambiguousamphibian

Thank you! This will help a lot!

It's also worth understanding the system deeper when you get into more complicated networks, but the principles aren't too complicated (even if it's hard to find a specific explanation outside of a link to openTTD, which has some key differences). A piece of track with a signal on either side becomes the boundary of a block, marked by yellow arrows and train car bounding boxes when you hover over the signal, and only one train is allowed in a block at a time. A chain signal lets a train "look ahead" at the state of the blocks in front, so it won't enter a block it's not allowed to exit, which is why it's so useful for intersections: you don't get trains barging in and blocking 3 lanes of traffic only to realize they don't have anywhere to go... A fun detail that might save you from some vehicular manslaughter over the course of the series is that the signals track not only the current position of trains, but their minimum stopping distance too. A green signal means a free block, red means currently occupied, and yellow means *about to be* occupied. If you're crossing the tracks by a signal and see it go yellow, loooook out.
@Dani0x1B
@Dani0x1B 3 жыл бұрын
DO *NOT* PUT ADDITIONAL SIGNALS BETWEEN INTERSECTIONS ON BIDIRECTIONAL TRACKS. Any length of track meant to be traversed by more than one train *must* be a single block with no signals, else it will allow multiple trains to enter and get forever blocked in the middle. For very long tracks this means you'll need to have small sections in the middle where trains can pass each other by splitting the tracks.
@yvrelna
@yvrelna 3 жыл бұрын
That rule of thumb only works when you build a train network with two lanes, one way tracks. He's got a single lane, two-way track, which needs to be signalled with a very different principle. He'll have to treat the entire shared section as one single, giant intersection. Or, just build two lanes, one way tracks, it's much easier to reason about than two-way tracks.
@HugoBaesJr
@HugoBaesJr 3 жыл бұрын
Whenever you have intersections and junctions, you probably need signals on the right side from where the train is coming (both sides in your case), before and after the intersection. You can check the mini-tutorial for trains on the academic cap icon on top right.

Having played this game for many years, I have SO many tips I could give you :) But, in the interest of brevity, I'll just give a couple of easy ones for now. 1, When it comes to radars, they have a permanent vision field in addition to the long-range scanning, so it makes a lot of sense to spread them out. Like one in each corner of each base. This also saves on power compared to your bunch of radars in a single spot. 2, Train signals can be hard to figure out, but as a starting point... try to think up a section of track that is _common_ for all the trains that will use it, and have every possible _entrance_ to that section equipped with a signal that points right at it. It looks like the track you've put in the video so far needs 4 signals.

For now however I will just giggle at all the small shortsighted decisions, like that research rig. Totally not gonna have any issues bringing in the next color, or two, or three, or four. :3c The one bit of advice I will give though for now, because I'm sure others have given more thorough and valuable advice, is that this game *heavily* rewards foreplanning. Blueprints and thinking a couple steps ahead of the current level of production will keep you from eventually hitting a massive bump where you go "Oh. I have to tear down half my factory now to do this." as well as make you feel super satisfied when you put together your bigger chains

It is nice to see that my suggestion has brought someone in to this beautifull game. Don't forget that blueprints can be your best friends. They can help you plan out stuff and think about what you need before you start building. Even when you don't have something, the "Ghost" (Unplaced Item that you planned from the blueprint or by pressing shift when placing it) will remain, so that when you do have it, you immediately know where to put it. And especially handy when you get your new servants, the bots. Also, R will switch the direction of pretty much everything, no need to dig it up, probably. But never forget, the factory must grow.

Some tips: Splitters do more than split; they have two input and two outputs, letting them balance both directions. They also can be clicked and used as filters. There aren't really "better" turrets available. The laser and flamer turrets are good and bad for different things, same as the gun. The lasers have long range and only need power, but have a serious idle power draw and a massive spike during actual use. The flamers work as long as they have fluid, but are inaccurate and have a limited arc. The guns have a tiny power draw (for the inserter) and can be "upgraded" by using better ammo, but require more complicated infrastructure to get working. You've got way too many radars in one place; if you take a look at the power grid, radars use a lot of power, and can only 'see' a set distance. Take all but one down at the main base, and as you expand add a radar at each new location. This will also allow you to scroll in on the map to see what's going on near a radar in real time; good for train stoppages or other issues. Power grid 'batteries' are called accumulators. If you use solar and/or laser turrets, you will need a lot of them. Grenades exist behind a green tech, and are very useful for clearing nests. They can be thrown from inside vehicles. Train signals are difficult to get your head around, but very useful. Your mistake here was that they need to be on each side of any intersection. The simplest way to set them up is to have a standard signal leading directly from the nearest intersection to a station, and chain signals in both directions on every side of every other intersection. Train un/loading stations work better if each cargo wagon is added/removed from equally, as otherwise the train will spend more time at the station waiting for the last car to finally finish. You can fit a max of 6 inserters to one side of each wagon. Make sure to use both sides of the belts when possible. Train stations can be renamed (among other things) by clicking on them. Different fuels last longer and make vehicles faster; this is offset by the difficulty in making them. The box near the inserter assembler will eventually start putting circuits on the belt leading to red belt assembler. Gates over train tracks should not affect their pathing; I've tried to force this myself in the past, which resulted in trains breaking down the gates instead of stopping. You can ride in any part of a train by pressing enter while close, same as a car. IIRC, there are two train achievements: be hit and killed by one (at full speed?), and be hit by one at full speed and survive. Something I've found useful is to bring the power into outposts in one location, and set a power switch on that point. If you start having serious power issues (such as running low on coal for the steam engines), you can run around to your outposts and turn them off until you've resolved the issue. You can manipulate power cables by grabbing copper wire in your inventory; "connecting" two items already connected will remove the connection. If you run out of power, your inserters on the boilers won't be able to put coal in them to make power, so even when they have access to coal the system will refuse to restart. Burner inserters can always fuel themselves and thus will never fully lock up. Shift+click and Ctrl+click can be used for bulk inventory management. Glad you're having fun; Factorio is great.

Great fun watching as always. A bit of advice for manufacturing specific things, if you have an end goal in mind for a supply chain. Nice to see you have a go at factorio. Its nice to see someone start out with the game without knowing the whole deal. I have a few tips that would help you get further, if you want to consider them. 1: More machines are better. Upgrades are something that are quite late-game and not really worth all that much early on. For now, you should expand your smelting capacity so you can provide full conveyor lines. You want about 4x Iron plate lines, 2x Steel, 4x Copper, 1x Stone, 1x Bricks and 1x Plastic. Having more, bigger smelting setups and overproducing is a good thing to do. *ALWAYS* overproduce when you initially set something up, you will need it later anyways. 2: Make use of a central "spine" of sorts for resources. Funnel all your smelted product into a dedicated space where there are ONLY belts running straight in one direction. This is what is commonly referred to as a "Main BUS" (computer science term for a central line of travel for many signals). From the BUS, use splitters to branch out sideways and have your factory modules shoot off to the side of the bus. It is worth to leave enough space among the bus to expand it later, as many more resources will go on there. Theres a good tutorial on the wiki on how to build and understand the BUS layout: wiki.factorio.com/Tutorial:Main_bus This will massively increase your efficiency and coordination. 3: Trains and rail signals are a beast of their own. Think of a set of tracks as a "Block". Blocks can be seperated into smaller blocks using signals. if a train is in a block ahead of a signal, the signal will turn red, blocking other trains from entering that block until that train has left the block. Trains can "reserve" a block they are about to enter, turning the signal yellow and effectively pre-blocking the path. Normal Signals look into the block ahead of them and turn red if they see a train in that block. Chain signals do the same but also look ahead to all other signals ahead of them and copy their state. if there are multiple signals ahead, aka a junction or split, the chain signal has an additional state, indicating that SOME paths are available and others are blocked. As a rule of thumb, the following applies: - Chain signal before a split - 1 Normal signal per lane directly after a split - Normal singals on every lane before a merge - Normal signal after every merge - Chain signals before a crossing(on both crossing lanes) - Normal signals after a crossing(on both crossing lanes) 4: When handling fluids with trains, it is advised to have unloading and loading buffer tanks to minimise time lost by travel. This applies especially to oil, as pumpjacks seize working as soon as the pipes are full. Adding a tank or two gains you more efficient production time while your train is away from the station. Additionally, loading from and unloading to tanks directly is a LOT faster than having a pipe in between. To the point where it is more efficient to have 2 pumps and 2 tanks per rail car than having any more pumps and using pipes to connect them. Basicly, its Tank>Pump>Train for loading and Train>Pump>Tank for unloading. Much like you already do it with chests for items. 5: Think modular! Most processing lines can be packaged into repeatable modules. For example, red science has a ratio of 1 Gear Assembler supplying 10 Assemblers for science packs. This can be set up and repeated using blueprints. If you dont want to melt your brain trying to do the calculations, I suggest a very simple QoL Mod called "Actual Crafting Time", which adds a little popup at the top of your screen that lets you see the ratios of production and consumtion, as well as In-/Outbound conveyor space usage for a set number of machines per recipe at a glance. 6: QoL Mods are a MUST. I recommend my top used ones: Vehicle Snap, Squeak Through, Actual Crafting Time, Even Distribution, FNEI. These massively help you in your endeavours without altering the game experience at all. Vehicle Snap snaps your drivable vehicles to certain angles while driving to help you go straight. Squeak Through lets you navigate tight spaces easier. ACT has been mentioned above. Even Distribution is a handy tool to manage distributing stuff from your inventory evenly to machines and adds a lot of useful little features as well. FNEI is just like minecrafts NEI but for factorio, it lets you see all recipes for an item and what it can be crafted into, which machines can craft it and how fast. Hope these are helpful to you! Keep up the good work.

A handful of tips: If you grab fish from the water, you can consume them and heal quickly during combat. Also, put your radars on the corners of your base for a larger radius. If you have multiple conveyors of one item/resource, you can use belt balancers to combine/fill the beltline efficiently. You can create dedicated areas for producing items, and then for more commonly used resources use busing lanes to transport them around the base for usage. If you hold shift while placing an item, it will create a ghost version of it allowing for the creation of templates, etc. Anyway, good content, and keep working at it. Cheers!

As someone with 600+ hours into factorio, it's fun watching someone just get into it. I remember having the same enthusiasm for my early factories. Good luck and have fun, it'll keep you busy for quite a while. The only wrong way to play factorio is to give up. Also: the rail signals you have set up won't work properly until you have a setup for each direction. For single lane rails, it's essential to mark off the segments properly in order to avoid jams and crashes. Using two lanes of rail simplifies things, but also makes junctions a bit trickier. btw the max multiplayer limit is around 255

My tip for you is start using production monitor (P) ASAP as this game is all about fixing bottlenecks in supply lines. Also plan for big big train stations with unloading bays and always lay 2 tracks (one for each direction). Any way, learning this game was great experience, have fun!

Build a wall between the bodies of water to the left of the base and then from the lower body to the coast on the right so that you have a large area of space to work with and also less overall wall to defend and just add the turrets and ammo belt across it, also with this new space spread out the construction of items to allow for growth and look into a process of creating a main bus belt Love the content

Here’s a bit of help with your train problem: Rail signals will halt a train if the “block” ahead of it is occupied by another train (red) or will be in the near future (yellow). You can see said “blocks” by holding a rail signal in your hand and looking at rails. Chain signals perform like a rail signal, however it is more complicated in that it will halt a train if the next rail signal is blocked. Chain signals are used mostly in larger intersections for that exact reason. The reason why your trains kept stopping was because you placed the signal before the branching paths of the Y-intersection; if you take a look at the rail blocks then you will see how the other train was occupying the block, hence causing the now-stopped train to... well... stop. Hope this explanation helps you on your endeavors! Love the vids man. Also love seeing your thought process. Makes me remember when I was new to factorio :)

Watching call your base large and sending train to a patch so close brings back to when I first started. Whatever you do don't look stuff up, just meander until your first rocket launch. That is the best way to play. Just remember that *you are always thinking too small*. The only real limit on this game is your computer not bursting into flames. The factory must grow. Hey AA, a bit of advice if you're interested: Don't be afraid to rip everything up and remake your base to be more optimized. When you unlock more tech, you'll figure out better systems to use said tech with. Idk, this was the best advice I've received about Factorio. Simplifying/ optimizing your factory helps me condense my thought process and mid/ late game problem solving. Trust me, this game gets pretty complex when you get into making blue and white science. That being said your base is pretty great already, definitely better than my first base lol love your content bro

oh nostalgia, i too had been building nonsensical spaghetti stuff with no chance to upgrade, all those 800 hours ago. you do you though, discovery is fun, and your next base would look better and the one after that - better still. btw, now i build spaghetti stuff that does make sense and can be expanded without being ripped apart first. and instead of encircling yourself in walls, try to just destroy all nests that are getting reached by pollution: that's what gets you attacked, and every attack is a step towards stronger bugs

That's a familiar response, lol. The best part is that some day when the regular Factorio starts to feel stale you can just plug in (a) modpack(s) like Bob's & Angel's or Seablock or Pyanodon or Yuoki or ... I've played since 0.8 or so in the pre-Steam days. Seeing them finally release 1.0 was expected but still strangely fulfilling, a feeling similar to designing a production block with proper ratios.

Quick tips, for the train signals, when you place them down you'll see the train tracks covered in colored lines, and placing one down splits one colored line into two. These are called blocks, and only one train can be on a block at a time. If you look, you'll see your iron and oil dropoff stations are on the same block, so the way you have it set up only one can be unloading at a time (and as a note, if you delete a train signal and that puts two trains on the same block, then they'll continue forward without checking to see if the block is occupied, which leads to crashes). Also while you're using tracks for both directions put the signals on both sides, if you move to using two tracks then put the signals on the right side of the direction you want the train to go. More turrets, more bullets, you are going to need them, the enemies get a whole lot more difficult. Also note the day-night cycle, and what effect that has on your power supply.

In regards to train planning, your train 'hub' should have at least two main tracks it can take, even if they make a giant loop (not effficient with scale). Sort of like a main bus with conveyor belts. You don't want to have to constantly go back to redesign early and obvious funnel points
