In this video, we take a look at the factors affecting the rate of transpiration.
I’ll start by explaining why factors that affect the rate of photosynthesis also affect the rate of transpiration - there are two main ones here.
Then we’ll look at two more factors that affect the rate of evaporation - remember, evaporation is what drives transpiration! Without the evaporation of water, there wouldn’t be any water loss.
Next, we’ll consider plant adaptations for water loss. Plants want to minimise this, so they can have a waxy cuticle, wilt, and close their stomata.
Finally, we’ll cover some quick questions so you can check what you’ve understood.

do we need to know how to use potometer is it a required practical

No, calculating the rate of transpiration using a potometer isn't a required practical. If an investigation involving the rate of transpiration comes up, you will be given enough information to be able to work out the answers - they are likely to be mathematical skills, i.e. calculating rate (distance/time). potometer is quite confusing

It definitely is the first time you see it, as can involve a bit of Maths in questions. Just think of it as a way to measure how much water the plant is losing through the leaves - if you can visualise it as the plant pulling up the water then that might help!

It depends if the stomata are open, but normally yes, the plant is losing water continuously. The stomata will close if it is very hot, dry or windy i.e. in conditions where the plant is losing more water than it can replace by osmosis in the roots. The stomata may also close at nighttime, as no photosynthesis can occur in the dark.
