This Factory Five Mk4 Roadster is a Shelby Cobra replica that (~$80,000 CAD, $64,652 USD converted) makes no apologies for being a loud, dangerous and unruly machine of pure driver engagement. Handbuilt by the owner, a gentleman named Rolf, and powered by a thunderous 427 Stroker V8, 520 horsepower explodes out the side-exit exhausts and straight into your eardrums. It also weighs only 2250 pounds. But what is it like to drive? And what happens if you put your foot down? Watch to find out! SUBSCRIBE!!!

@@deankruse2891 I received my kit December 2019 and it was registered June of 2021. I could have been done sooner, but I moved during that time and was unable to work on the car for about 3 months. Also, the DMV was a huge delay due to the coronavirus. They say it takes about 400 hours to complete the kit. If you're interested, check out the build school that Mott community college offers. You go from bare frame to driving car in 3 days. Granted, it's not an accurate depiction of what it's like to put one together yourself. Let me know if you are planning to build one, and I can give you plenty of tips that I learned along the way.

Not to ruin the joke, but it was Parnelli Jones who said that. You never know if drivers are serious when they say stuff like that, though. Sometimes it's just a psyche. But in this case, I think Jones was referring to the original Trans-Am cars in particular, which were a bit crude and unwieldy even by the standards of the 1960s. IIRC, Jones won a T-A race at Riverside, in which he actually passed at least one car by going off-track into the dirt (not grass -- desert dirt and rocks). Only a Trans-Am car or a NASCAR 'stock car' was robust enough to do that sort of thing. I guarantee you he didn't drive Indy cars in the way he described. He would not have lived out a single season, maybe not a single race, at 180MPH between concrete walls or ARMCO barriers, with essentially no driver protection whatsoever.

I built my Factory Five (Mk III) 17 years ago. Pretty much everything y'all said about it is spot on, it is a hairy chested, loud, fast, and scary car. When out for a drive kids stop what they are doing and stare, women run to protect their children, and men stand at attention with a hand over their heart. With that said, I never tire of driving it, in fact, I watch my weather app year-round looking for the next 'Cobra day.' After some 70K miles I could tell stories for hours... Countless challenges by other drivers on the street, all but one of which I declined (but it was epic.) The five state, two day, 1000 mile rally I entered where rain poured for an entire day. I was soaked to the core and white knuckling the wood steering wheel through the entire state of Georgia, hydroplaning and oversteering all the way. While in this car I was 'hit on' by a pretty woman, the only time that has happened to me in more than 20 years. It is a raw, visceral, engaging car that you take seriously or die. It is a time machine, a dream maker. It is wonderful.

Many many years ago when I was a younger I was working as a telephone repair tech and I still remember it as if it was yesterday...a middle aged woman backed out of a garage in an actual right hand drive AC Cobra right next to the pole I was working on. She pulled out slowly towards the main road, looking both ways quickly, and then matted it. Elevensies right down the road as I watched with my mouth hanging open...she caught second and chirped the tires then was gone. I could still hear the car for quite some time after she left as she was blasting along a curvy shoreline road heading towards the nearest town. About 45 minutes later I heard the car coming back...as she pulled in the driveway she smiled and waved, grabbed her bag of groceries and went into the house. Yes, I kid you not, she was using it as a grocery getter. Even the people who don't own a Cobra have stories to tell about Cobras.

When I was a kid there was a guy in my neighborhood that had either an original or a very nice kit car. The car was an absolute monster, and when stopped at a red light next to him you would feel the cam lope in your body while sitting in your car, even with the windows up. I always wanted to know what it was like to basically drive around on a gigantic high HP motor with some seats strapped to it.....lol.

No one said you shouldn't. Each car has a niche to fill, was built to fill a specific need. Those needs don't always include comfort or practicality. You want a vintage race car that is wholly impractical, then get it, no one is telling you not to, no matter how much you want to feel like you're bucking convention. This car isn't for me, but even with different priorities a guy like me can see the appeal of a fast, light, powerful, and downright beautiful car that is a snapshot of auto history. Shelby didn't give a damn for comfort or practicality, he built a race car, a fast and loud monster. So go play with your expensive race car and pretend you're being persecuted over it.

I love Factory Five. Watching build progress threads on forums and KZfaq, dreaming and making choices on how you would hypothetically build yours, shopping for drivetrains. I have that kind of personality where I hyperfixate and have mentally worked out what I would do on countless project cars, and Factory Five is like cocaine for the obsessed car guy brain. Someday, Someday.

A lot of this video resonates with why I love riding super sport motorcycles. It's so incredibly thrilling. The feeling of freedom and connection with the road is just unparalleled, and it's just all around spectacular. At that, it absolutely comes with incredible danger, and there were a couple times I nearly cost myself my life while doing things at speeds I shouldn't have been doing. I ended up selling my bike and got a truck to replace it, but God willing, I'm gonna get another one to replace it real soon. It's a thrill like no other.

I got older (early 30s now) and forgot about it for the most part and shelved it as something to do later on in life. One of the best episodes in recent memory. I really liked James' impressions, and how they were a combination of facing imminent death/complete awe and admiration for the beauty his senses were experiencing. It looked like James was meeting a Bengal tiger for the first time, in the wild. Thomas was fighting the urge to say he wants one, or at least hopes he still desires one when he is ready for it in 5-10 years.

In 1968 at 16 years old ,I had a 57 chevy, black. I used to road race it with 20 somethings on the back recently tarred and stone roads of upstate New York. First, yes I was an idiot. It could jump. power slide around corners . Take down hedges in the first New York snow. Ok I did finally kill it before it killed me. Watching your video brings back many fond memories.

Love this build, I've been considering a Factory 5 for a while but I already have an even more dangerous car. A 1959 Austin Healey Bugeye with a 13 B rotary. About 300 hp in a 1100ish lb car. Park it next to a Cobra and the Cobra looks like a SUV! On the turn signal the Bugeye also has a toggle but no light at all haha.

@hitchedtohorsepower
@hitchedtohorsepower 2 жыл бұрын
@@Maxime-ho9iv You are probably correct! One thing that might slightly help is the engine builder I'm working with is putting a computer in that will let me turn on a basic traction controller system. When I turned 16 my dad let me drive all of his other really nice cars but other than pulling the Bugeye in and out of the garage to wash and wax it I wasn't allowed to drive it until I went to racing school. Even after that it was made clear to me that if he heard of me doing stupid things in it or any of the other cars and wouldn't be allowed to drive any of them. We lived in a kinda small town, Carson City, Nevada, so things did get back to him especially when I was driving cars that stood out. I remember getting home and being asked why I had the top down on the Saab convertible that was my daily in the McDonald's drive thru while it was snowing lol. He didn't care he just thought I was a bit crazy! I Bugeye probably won't be finished till next Spring but the paint is finished so I think I'm going to put a video out going over the project in the next month if you want to see more!
