I love the way in which you talk about these incredible creatures with such respect. As a ratty owner and lover of them it’s so nice to actually hear someone else talk about them the way they actually should be.

2:07 According to researchers at the universities of Oslo and Ferrara, the Black Death pandemic was caused by people carrying fleas and body lice, not rats.

I just trapped the biggest strongest rat I've ever seen. Just like the typical mouse trap i used a larger one for rats. The amount of pressure this thing puts on when it snaps is no joke, you don't want to have your finger in it when it goes off. I saw the rat next to my house, within 5 minutes off baiting the trap it went for it. I heard it go off and i looked sure thing i got it, or so i thought. After some freaky squealing sounds it made it some how slipped out of the trap. It had it by its neck and still it slipped the trap. I thought man this is one rat i don't want to mess with. I set it up again and got a big mouse left it for the morning and the mouse and trap is gone both are missing and im left scratching my head wondering WTF.

It sounds macabre, I'm sure, but some rat or squirrel probably dragged the trap away to feast on the mouse meat. Hey, a free meal is a free meal! (And it's not cannibalism if it isn't your own species.)

There are some living under my shed but I wont kill them. They dont seem to cause any problems so I will see how it goes. I think they get a very bad press. They may carry some disease but so do humans :-) They are quite cute really.

rats are super smart and empathetic animals. they learn their names and know their owners and even lick like dogs. they get bad rep. lice were what caused the black plague. there’s evidence and studies are going on about it. either way, why hate an animal just because of a plague they may or may not have started hundreds of years ago and have not brought back since

They won't come into your house as long as they have good life under your house. They need food, access to clean water, shelter from predators and a nice home that they build from whatever materials they find. Lots of people have discovered that giving rats a little food prevents them from seeking food from the trash bins or from people's homes, and offering them nesting materials like old sheets and towels cut into little strips allows them to build cosy and warm nests in places such as under your shed that they don't have a need to seek warmer housing inside human houses. Because they are a commensal species to humans they will always prefer to live near us to gain some protection against larger predators and to make use of things we discard, but it's possible to live peacefully together so that they stay out of our houses and don't cause excessive damage from their need to gnaw things. Rats aren't really more likely to carry contagiousndiseases than any other animals, they're simply as clean as the environment they live in and especially in urban areas the environment is dirty because of human activity. In cleaner cities the rats are cleaner too, and the animal itself is a bit of a clean freak and always washing itself. They just aren't capable of washing all of the city grime and pathogens that are distributed into the city environment by us.

@@SunniLeBoeufthey piss and defecate all over the place. A dead rat is the only kind of good rat. I’m 47 and never encountered one until they burrowed into my rental property. They crap everywhere and pee so it stinks. It literally has made me happy to have killed my second rat today. I am hoping that’s the end of them but who knows with these disgusting little creatures. They are smart I’ll give them that because they burrowed under the foundation and came up in the only corner that isn’t poured concrete. My plan once all dead and no more sign is to fill that corner with concrete and hope they never find another way in. Vile creatures

We have rats in our garden because we put out food for the birds. Its nearly impossible to stop rats being in an outside space. We could take the food away but that would harm the birds. Instead its a compromise situation that we are careful to have no points of entry to the house and that we keep the paths clean as rats are incontinent. They're amazing little animals BUT they do carry very harmful diseases to humans such as Weils disease.

Same here, I feed the birds & have a few resident rats. I have 3 pet rats so they don't bother me, but I make sure they are nowhere near my house. I have only a few at the moment as the corn fields behind my house are ripening & there is plenty of food, but in the winter I get a few more. They all look extremely healthy with shiny coats lol. I just live with them.

Do they eat chickens or birds. My rescue pigeon wonders my garden and i heard a scuffle going on. I ran out and saw feathers but he was ok. I then saw a big brown rat scuttle away. The pigeon was near seed i had put down for him. Do you think the pigeon was just a threat to the food source the rat though he was entitled to lol?

How can I live peacefully with them under my house and me inside my house. I feed them, they multiply fast, I need to seal them out from under my house but first I have to get them out before I seal it. I have no desire to harm them I love to feed them and study them I just do not want them to cause damage under my house or move to my attic is there a way I can feed them and let them stay here in peace?

@@iwansteffan9106 Not insane I mean just because I don't like to kill anything doesn't make me insane I didn't say I wouldn't kill them just that I didn't want to have to. I was just asking if there was anyway to let them live and keep them away from my house. I don't really feed them I feed the birds and squirrels and the rats come to eat what falls to the ground I just don't want to kill them everything is just trying to live the same as we are trying to live. I know now that I can't keep them out from under my house because the type of rats they are, Norway rats, burrow tunnels and can get under the house so now I'm looking in to humane ways to control the population via birth control or humane removal method.
