2:07 According to researchers at the universities of Oslo and Ferrara, the Black Death pandemic was caused by people carrying fleas and body lice, not rats.

We have rats in our garden because we put out food for the birds. Its nearly impossible to stop rats being in an outside space. We could take the food away but that would harm the birds. Instead its a compromise situation that we are careful to have no points of entry to the house and that we keep the paths clean as rats are incontinent. They're amazing little animals BUT they do carry very harmful diseases to humans such as Weils disease.

Same here, I feed the birds & have a few resident rats. I have 3 pet rats so they don't bother me, but I make sure they are nowhere near my house. I have only a few at the moment as the corn fields behind my house are ripening & there is plenty of food, but in the winter I get a few more. They all look extremely healthy with shiny coats lol. I just live with them.

Lovely film John, beautiful shots on the fenland. I remember finding a little owl nest, they had nested in between the bales of hay in a barn.

I heard the plague was spread by flees on gerbils carried by traders from Eurasia to sell as pets in Europe.

@donbax. Hey, I've got an idea for ya! Why don't you go take a course at your local university ....called Evolutionary Biology. It always amazes me that anti-science people want Twitter length answers to complex, but very understandable processes.

I love the way in which you talk about these incredible creatures with such respect. As a ratty owner and lover of them it’s so nice to actually hear someone else talk about them the way they actually should be.

I just trapped the biggest strongest rat I've ever seen. Just like the typical mouse trap i used a larger one for rats. The amount of pressure this thing puts on when it snaps is no joke, you don't want to have your finger in it when it goes off. I saw the rat next to my house, within 5 minutes off baiting the trap it went for it. I heard it go off and i looked sure thing i got it, or so i thought. After some freaky squealing sounds it made it some how slipped out of the trap. It had it by its neck and still it slipped the trap. I thought man this is one rat i don't want to mess with. I set it up again and got a big mouse left it for the morning and the mouse and trap is gone both are missing and im left scratching my head wondering WTF.

It sounds macabre, I'm sure, but some rat or squirrel probably dragged the trap away to feast on the mouse meat. Hey, a free meal is a free meal! (And it's not cannibalism if it isn't your own species.)

Dear John, Sven Brandenburg from the Netherlands and I work for NATUUR DE LUXE, a brand new educational television program for children about nature. For our show, we'd love to use an excerpt of this blackbird that is mimicking a police siren. Is that possible? Thanks in advance! Sven
