Ryu Sera thought her dreams had come true in 2010 when she made her debut with K-pop girl band Nine Muses. But four years later, Sera's career seemed over when her management company sacked her in a band reshuffle. In 2020, the singer started speaking out against the K-pop system in which a tiny minority of people ever rise to stardom. She has also been given a rare second chance with a new weekly televised singing contest where all the performers are failed and once-famous idols. The programme includes a twist in that none of the seven participants each week are eliminated. Instead, the singer earning the highest points from judges will have their song released as a single with the artist getting a share of the profits.

Anyone who is familiar with Nine Muses, even if they got into kpop after their debut, knows that Star Empire was trash and treated them as products. Their documentary on debuting Nine Muses has actually become infamous and is often given as an example to newer fans who believe that kpop is all glamour when, in fact, it isn't.

But at the same time, there are millions of groups in this industry. Hundreds are debuting daily. Its hard to find groups like this out of the millions, especially groups from companies you don't even know the name of. There are millions of talented and incredible groups but not all of them are going to get the success they deserve unfortunately. Not all of them can get noticed, its impossible. There's only a few groups in the industry who are lucky enough to get the fame and success. This is just the way the world works. Its the same with the western industry. It really depends on luck tbh.

true, it all depends on luck. Groups who debuted almost at same time with average age of 17 and 26, though with different music style with a vast popularity gap..... it's difficult to follow each and every comeback or debut but I do try to know more about 'not well known groups', or maybe I feel sympathy towards them, but over the time I realised even if I don't bother to litsen, the one who's meant to get recognition will eventually do. This doesn't make anyone less talented or bad at music, it's just how society works, even if I study hard, there will be people who will always be ahead of me..... any industry is just source of income, some people are at the top, others just do what life offers after they don't achieve what they wanted. In the words of YG 27 is the age where females should be retiring. Part of an female idol's appeal is youth and even if you look young they cannot get over that that you can technically be the mom of teengae idols. Kpop will eventually get there but not yet. They have the mentality of how managers treated the US girl groups of the 60s that disbanded when most of them reached their mid 20s. Best thing to do is become and artists like western females and you can go on indefinitely. Kpop for girls will always be teens to mid twenties as it is aimed at high schoolers in Korea

It’s very much not comparable. In America the chances of you blowing up with ONE song and making banks out of if is 100% higher than Korea. The training isn’t as harsh, the expectations aren’t as high people don’t expect you to be perfect at all times, you don’t get locked up in a training room for years on wondering if itll all be worth it or you’ll be disposed of like garbage the next day. The mental torture these people go through is truly incomparable and is very unique to Kpop Industry. These people don’t “just” want to make money to buy gold chain and diamond grills they have a real dream and real talent. Also in America more and more people self produce themselves, music labels are dying. Whereas in Korea the chance of you even being on the radio without a label behind is extremely slim.

Yooo. This was in my recommended and I thought the girl in the thumbnail looked familiar so I clicked. I didn't expect it to be Sera. I've been watching her youtube videos for awhile and she never fails to put a smile on my face. I wish her all the best, she's an amazingly talented artist and didn't deserve what happened to her.

❤️❤️❤️ this shows just how hard being in the KPOP industry is. She is strong, she and the other artists she will be with on this show. I wish her the best as she rises back from the ashes

As NOT a kpop fan, seeing her not giving up brings joy to my face because it justs shows she's not an avatar but a person

I wish her the best! It's heartbreaking to see so many artists/idols fall short and/or are devalued by the companies they work so hard for.
