Sarde (noun), [Sa-r-de]: A colloquial term used in the Middle East to describe the act of letting go & kicking off a stream of consciousness and a rambling narrative.
The Sarde After Dinner Podcast is a free space based out of the heart of Beirut, Lebanon, where Médéa Azouri & Mouin Jaber discuss a wide range of topics (usually) held behind closed doors in an open and simple way with guests from all walks of life.

Thanks for the very insightful episode, amazing from Sarde as always. Just a vital point to make: we are not Arab Israelis, we are Palestinians. Please don’t put us into that category, paper and ink in a passport does not define our identity, our history does.

KHOMMOS!!! Ya Khimir...! That was the most linguistically abominal thing I've ever heard! But Fadi is real gem - his love of language and the way he translates the genesis and journey of language, with humour and humainty is what appeals to lay persons me. Fantastic Sarde as always x

kteeeeer 7iluw hal episode! it's true the hierarchy of vowel sounds, in Arabic too. It's how I teach students to know which kursi to write the hamza on: the strongest vowel family is ي + ِ , then ا + َ , then و + ُ

I'm a very big fan of your show, you always bring interesting people and also a big fan of fadi's content on Instagram. Thank you for bringing him to Sarde. although, i must correct you, 13:55 fadi mentions the Arabs of the 1948, and how they don't spell the 'gh غ' in ghazzi instead they spell it ع a'azza (3azza) - that is incorrect. firstly, we see this phrase (arabs of the 48) as an attempt to separate mentally and ideologically the Palestinians remaining in the land from the rest of the occupied territory so we prefer to be called 'falasteneyet al dakhel' as in al dakhel al mo7tal, the Palestinians of the occupied land. secondly, we do spell the letter 'gh' we say ghazzi not a'zza (as the jews spell it), and we hate to be called Israelis :)

ناك العديد من التفاسير حول أصل ومعنى كلمة «الشام». يذكر بعض الباحثين ان اسم «شام» منسوب إلى سام بن نوح الذين أستوطنوا المنطقة وبنى مدينة دمشق. كما وردت كـ «شأم»، و«شآم»، وهي تذكر وتؤنث، لكن التسمية للمؤنث. وتعني الشامة السوداء التي تظهر على الجلد. سميت تلك المناطق ب بلاد الشام التي تشمل سوريا، فلسطين، لبنان، الأردن لكثرة قراها وتداني بعضها من بعض، فشبهت بالشامات. كما قد تكون من الشُّؤمى أي الطرف الأيسر. كما قد تكون شامَ: أي النظر إِلى السَّحَابَ والبرقَ لكي يتحقق أين يكون مطَره، وقد يكون للدلالة إلى المنطقة الشمالية التي تلب المطر إلى الصحراء العربية. كما يمكن أن يكون مصدرها كلمة شم: أي استعمال حاسة الشم، وقد تكون استعملت على أساس أن المنطقة مليئة بروائح العطور خاصة من شجر الأرز. والأفضل أن أصلها «سام» على اسم سام بن نوح، وبدلوا نطق السين إلى شين يعني اسم شام أيضا المكانة المرتفعة. ومن الجانب الديني يُطلق على الشام بهذا الاسم لأنها شِمال (يسار) الكعبة، كما أُطلق على اليمن هذا الاسم لأنها يمين الكعبة.

حلقة رائعة. بالمناسبة تبديل أول حرف بحرف الـ ميم موجود بالتركي. مثلا بدل ما يقولوا امشي نروح لشي مكان بقولوا: امشوا نروح على شي ديسكو ـ ميسكو, بدل ما يقولوا عطونا شي نشربوا بقولوا: في شي كولا ـ مولا, بدل ما يقولوا عطيني هويتك بقولوا: معك تي جي - مي جي TC-MC

اللغة فيها جانب رهيب انها توحد الثقافات ، فصل الحدود سبب كثير مشاكل لنا لكن بالاخير كلنا من نفس الطينة (مثل أضافي) أختيار موفق باستضافة فادي ، موسوعة تمشي على الأرض الله يحفظه.

In Malay language, I would say the equivalent for 'سردة' would be 'lepak' (to relax spend time doing nothing in particular with friends and family), definitely a word that Westerners wouldnt have as discussed in the episode.

"Lepak" is "Nongkrong" in Indonesian, or "Cangkruk" in Eastern Javanese

السردة كانت كثير حلوة وممتعة ما كان بدي اياها تخلص بس عندي ملاحظة بالنسبة لعرب ٤٨ صح الاسرائيلين بكتبوا بالعبرانية عزة عن غزة وحتئ بسبب انه ما بيقدروا يحكوا حرف العين بقولوا أزا بس عرب ٤٨ بحكوا غزة عادي ممكن لما عرب ٤٨ بحكوا العبراني بقولوا أزا كنوع من اثبات انهن بحكوا اللغة بشكل متقن كيف ما اليهود بحكوا (انا من عرب ٤٨) شكرا عالسردة كانت ممتعة وشيقة جداا

للتصحيح، عرب ال ٤٨ نلفظها غزه بال "غين"، اعضاء الكنيسيت عندما يومهوا ملامهم بالعبري للاعضاء اليهود احيانا يلفظوها "عزه". بينما الغلبيه يلفظوها "غزه"

Very nice conversation, I really enjoyed it❤ being very keen to languages and etymology, I’ve been already following cedrusk for a while, now I’m glad to know you two thanks to him 😊 By the way I am from Turkey and until now, I thought that using a word twice by changing its first letter with “m” to give it a refusal meaning existed only in Turkish! Like “No cinema minema today” 😂 I like how different cultures can share a common way of speaking. Do you have any idea why do we do that? Where does it come from? And are there any other language that use the same method? Persian maybe?

Fadi, I really hope this is rock bottom, but I don't think it will be... Economically, look at Venezuela, there is worse and I think we will get there sadly. And in terms of wars, and society, we see new militias forming (jnoud el rab), poverty leads to extremism, and i don't think we will see 1950s Lebanon, maybe not even 2015 Lebanon. I hope one day my children will proudly say that they're Lebanese, just like i do, but maybe have something to be proud of. I dont think i will get to live that day
