Fail! I Built A Tacoma Rollcage For Ultimate Adventure that Won't Pass Tech Inspection.

Well that was a big mistake!
I built a bare minimum roll cage for Ultimate Adventure and right after I made this video they said it won't pass! Ultimate Adventure is wild and for the folks in charge, safety is paramount. They want to see a lot more structure than I have here so there needs to be a part 2 to this story. The good news is when I get back into the USA my buddy Dave Chappelle is going to help me cobble together a roll cage just in time for UA 2022. When they said a simple 4 point cage I was thinking race car and of course they were wanting more. Not a big deal. Now that we have most of the truck back together I'm hoping Dave and I can knock it out in half a day. This will be down to the wire but with them being so particular about cages I think this year's UA is going to be crazy!!! They wouldn't enforce these guidelines if they didn't think I needed it.
I hope you enjoy the video! See you soon!

If you had more time a exo-cage might have been the better option for keeping the interior clean. 🙃Be careful around Dave you might walk away from your coilovers and come back to airbags. 🤣🤣

Not to mention that interior cages are very dangerous unless paired with an appropriate helmet. The chances of TBI go up exponentially even in the most minor of collisions or impacts.

Exo cages are literally for looks they do nothing in an actual roll over not to mention how much more they way. Hybrid would be a good option to keep head room but do yourself a favor and look at Exo cages in actual roll over scenarios they generally just fold.

Not sure if you're aware, you can turn off the side curtains airbags so you don't have to worry about them going off in off-road situations. Even if you don't hit anything, extreme angles can set them off. The panel to the left of the steering wheel. Press and hold the RSCA OFF button.

We just had a tragic death up in Crandon, Wisconsin at the Amsoil Cup last weekend. Roll cages can help in minor situations, however they can provide a false sense of security leading up to more dangerous driving. No roll cage will reduce g forces in an impact. I would say roll cages actually make the shock forces worse resisting the energy dissipation strategies designed into a modern vehicle. Your body and especially your head and neck can only withstand so much and I would say its far less than people realize, life is fragile, your mind is your number one safety device. Be safe friend.

Nate, you should check out the progressive rate Boogie Bumps offered by Thuren for Ram 2500s. They bolt on simple with 2 bolts, and with your mad skills I'm sure you could fabricate mounting brackets that would work for your truck. Timbrens are really load helpers, whereas the Boogie Bumps are purpose built to progressively slow the axle in the last few inches, not unlike mechanical bump stops.

Something that may help keep the pipe from getting a twist or a "dog" as electricians call it is getting a no dog you level your pipe and the no dog screws down on the end of the pipe and when you move or turn it just make sure the bubble is level and bend. Klein makes a good one and Milwaukee is ok too just stay away from southwire. Great build man

When we bend conduit and want to keep it square with multiple bends, we strut strap a short piece of strut on the end and level it. As you feed it into the bender make sure it stays level and all your bends will be clocked correctly. As far as a roll cage that won't interfere with the airbags could you build an exoskeleton with those couplings and make it removable? It would keep the inside nice and could be made removable for resale.

Great tip on leveling conduit. I worked at Coors at the main brewery complex for many years. Our in house construction electricians were absolute masters at bending rigid conduit. I had always told myself when I’m ready to build a cage I’m going to beg one of them to come help me.

Someone was stuck on plumber's math with 22.5°. Sucks about the cage, but it sounds like you have a plan. For the driveshaft and the low pinion of the 9", did you consider a double cardan joint at the front of the second piece of the shaft that goes down to the axle? This way you could point the pinion up at the carrier bearing instead of just matching the angle of it. I think you said something about running a guard, but using a double cardan allows the pinion to point up and out of the way.

There is a tool you should look into. It’s used for doing conduit and clamps onto the end of the pipe or tube you are working on. In the industry we refer to them as a no dog and you can find them by that if you google it. The simple units only have a single level in them but there are digital models and multilevel units as well.

On the hydro bumps, why can’t you just change out the Delrin consumable with a softer hard rubber compound to dampen the tap noise and make the contact less sharp? Just an idea, it would be soft and quiet like having both a rubber bump and an air/hydro bump.

Hey Nate, I have a solid axel swapped 93 bronco with a Dana 44 HD out of a 79 f250 in the front and a sterling 10.25 in the back. I’ve recently had the opportunity to get my bronco on some decent trails for the first time. And I quickly realized that my leaf sprung front axel was limiting me greatly. I’m planning on swapping in a radius arm Dana 44 out of a 79 bronco at the moment. However I’m thinking about simply converting my Dana 44 hd to tube radius arms. And coil spring front suspension instead. I’m 19 and in college so budget is definitely a limiting factor but looking for some advice.

Been down that road and I would suggest not doing that and saving for a D60. cheaper in the long run as you just cant keep u-joints and shafts in the 44 with any larger than 37" tires. Even after cromo shafts and yukon u-joints they are still not up to the task. I made this mistake with an early bronco (same axle but narrow). Also the ford radius arms don't flex well at all and are prone to axle wrap issues, especially once you replace the "C" bushings, all aftermarket ones are stiff (yes you can do the "wristed" thing but you are just masking an inherent problem). I would do some shackle work to make what you have work decent till you can 3 or 4 link it with a 60. Packaging is much easier with coilovers or air shocks.
