Stan after watching Blacktail Studios he applies a light first coat and sands it after drying, using the first coat as a sealer. It works as I have done my work bench following his instructions.

Have poured well over 200 gallons of Stone Coat in the past few years doing counter tops and wood tables. Awesome product. Couple things: torch not wanting to stay lit: generally its because of the model torch head. Stone Coat recommends the Bernzomatic TS4000 for this very reason. It stays lit in any position. I've got so much epoxy residue on mine can't tell what it is but it keeps on running without a hitch. When I do large raw wood projects, I use the 2-3 thin coats (about 1 ounce per sq ft ) to seal the wood, let each set up and then do the thick/final pour. Yes, takes a little longer but get way better control over the air releasing out of the wood. For difficult spots like knots and such if still bubbling after 2-3 thin coats, then I use a burn in stick to seal those spots up. Your project turned out very nice. You all did a good job.

When restoring or working with old stuff remember that not prepping the surface comes with challenges. Some of those dry spots could be caused be oil, dirt, or other contaminants being on the surface or in the woods. It's just a problem you will have to deal with if you want to keep the "well used" look

Dude, I love their products. I have poured a few tables countertops and other miscellaneous projects and NEVER had any issues. I also live in the low desert 120+ during the summer still no issues other then flowing smoother, Nothing but quality results with stone coat. Here in Southern California. I actually live 45 minutes away from a big online Epoxy retailer, when I use to order from them I could drive to them in 45 minutes and pick up the product…..but they do not allow that but since they ship it takes 5 to 7 days no faster that’s it Order from stone coat I get the product 2,3 days max A phenomenal company quality product. I’m nobody compared to you, but I won hundred percent Stanley back what you said on the quality of this product as another frequent user of it love it.

The epoxy finish is 'nice' but I would have done minimal refinishing and maybe a light oil or stain to bring out the beauty of the grain. You took an antique and made it SHINY. I'm guessing that the next 100 years will not be as kind to the new surface as the first 100 years was to to the raw wood.

I have had a lot of yellowing with the batch of stone coat I used about 4 years ago, I have had none with total boat. Maybe I got a bad batch of their product, I don't know, I'd be willing to try them again on a small project, but I'm a bit apprehensive from the one I used them on.
@richisle5504Ай бұрын
The yellowing is my only complaint,to be clear. It didn't crack, and was more thermally stable than other brands I've used. Just wanted to be clear on that. 👍
@Doubie.Ай бұрын
Next time add a touch of blue it will counteract that, all the plastic resins will yellow like the headlights on your car do eventually
@richisle5504Ай бұрын
@@Doubie. I have seen that from blacktail studios, I did that just bc the look I was going for (very faint), I honestly think I just got an off batch. It was a deep pour, and I followed their directions, it looked great for 6 months, and then started to yellow.
@DaveW74TVNАй бұрын
@@richisle5504 sounds like there was no UV inhibitor
@richisle5504Ай бұрын
The yellowing happened in the course of 6 months, but hasn't worsened since then. I've used cheaper Chinese epoxy and not had the same results. Definitely not advocating for the Chinese trash, just mentioning my results from stone coat (in my experience, and I'm fully aware that I could have got an off batch.) I'm a big fan of stone coat, been following them for years, that's why I went with them on that project.
